Guinness World Record Locations on Geoguessr - Guess The Record [PLAY ALONG]

  • Today it's some good old fashioned play along Geoguessr, except this time each location is the site of a Guinness world record. It could be the biggest, smallest or oldest of something or it could be the exact spot that someone consumed the most hobnobs. I don't really know what we're going to get, so let's find out!
    PLAY ALONG: Play your round, put your marker down, then switch tabs back to CZcams to watch my attempt and the result. This way you don't ruin the game or the video!
    The link: www.geoguessr.com/challenge/z...
    Did you beat my score? let me know how you did in the comments!

    Guys of course I have heard of Angkor Wat!
    I’m also aware that there are many temples in Cambodia, Thailand, India etc some of which look very similar so I chose not to rush in.

    Hey Tom, thanks for playing my map!
    First of all in the description of the map i included a spreadsheet with all the solutions to the locations, so you don't have to google them all one by one :D
    To the solutions of the locations:
    1. Angkor Wat: Yes just like you said it's the Biggest religious building
    2. Large Binocular Telescope Observatory: Its the largest optical telescope (mirror diameter of 2 x 8,4 meters)
    3. Takabisha: It was the steepest rollercoaster until 2019 and rightly as you said got replaced by the one in new jersey but unfortunately there was no imagery available
    4. University of Parma: Bologna is the oldest university in continuous operation but the one in Parma is the oldest (founded in 962) but was closed and reopened several times between the 14th and 19th centuries. There might be a bit of controvery around it depending where you look so i think i might change that location.
    5: Statue of Unity: Yes, it's the tallest statue in the world

    the university of parma one is weird really, couldn't find anything on the guinness website, someone mentioned on another comment that it was probably the mapper mixing it with the university of parma in ohio, someone else said it was the university's aula magna that had the record of being the largest conference hall in a university but I couldn't find anything about it on guinness, I found some records that were broken in the province of parma like (former) "Largest hedge maze (permanent)" in Fontanellato and "Most professional basketball teams played for by a female" in Borgo Val di Taro, but looking at the number of locations in the map it certainly doesn't include a bunch of locations of parma just because there is a record there, it's only specificaly where it happens, which makes the university of parma even weirder because it's in the science campus and not in the historical part, so most likely it's the mapper's mistake with ohio.
    EDIT: ok so it can't be Ohio because there isn't a "university of parma" in Parma, Ohio, it also can't be the aula magna because a very quick research revealed that (at least) the university of caracas and the central university of venezuela have a bigger capacity and size, and the one from parma seens really small in the photos
    EDIT 2: I wasted so much time trying to figure it out and the mapper had a google docs all this time lmao, so anyway the university of parma is on the map for the record of "oldest university"... even tho it doesn't have the record... well, that's it guys, have a great day.

    According to the German Wikipedia Article, the University of Parma is the oldest in the world, founded in 962. However, the source cited for this year of foundation is the website of the university itself. It says there that a diploma from the year 962 exists granting "the institutionalization of public high schools of right".
    So it might after all be the oldest university in the world.

    • @KoenVerheyen
      @KoenVerheyen Před 10 měsíci

      I used Google translate on the Italian wikipedia page and there it seems to say (if translation is accurate) it's "among the eldest in the world", which would not be a record. The German version (at least at this point) also states it "gehört sie zu den ältesten Universitäten der Welt" which doesn't say it is the eldest. If that would be the referenced record it would make much more sense to put the marker in downtown Parma where some old University buildings are.

    • @twoermanntwr
      @twoermanntwr Před 10 měsíci

      @@KoenVerheyen Well yes and no. I agree that it says "among the eldest in the world" in the university's wikipedia article. Nevertheless, the linked list of oldest universities in the world clearly lists Parma at the top.
      Furthermore, I would imagine the record is way more about the institution than about any building. Hence, it would in my opinion make no sense to put the marker to some old university building if they are not from the time of foundation and still part of the university. I am not sure whether these sort of buildings still exist.

    After independence, there were 562 princely states and he united all of them to build the Republic of India. That is why it is named as Statue of Unity.

    I knew the second one instantly since I only live about an hour away and have visited. That's really cool to see you try to figure it out. If you go an take a tour, they tell you all about the big tubes. :) It is the largest binocular scope (and will likely remain that) because future observatories will all use multiple mirrors and interferometry for this class (size) of mirror. Yes, smaller and larger ones will be built, but they are very unlikely to be binocular anymore due to advances in tech.

    Don't feel bad about the Arizona observatory guess. The American Southwest is wildly diverse. Arizona and New Mexico specifically are known for those large alpine mountain forests, flanked by vast dry desert. A few hours of driving, you are going from 100F+ degrees to a cool breezy 60F, ascending and descending 1000s of feet, through forest and desert and forest, and back again.
    It's quite vast, ever-changing, and beautiful. But very hard to guess without knowing the area.
    Fun tip though: those license plates with the purple hilly ground with a cactus on the left, are Arizona plates, and don't resemble any other plate in the US. May help you in the future!
    Anyway, big fan of yours, cheers from USA.
