This 2006 Chevrolet 2500HD Silverado is a Holy Grail Diesel, with the 6.6 LBZ Duramax and Allison

  • I got lucky - or so I'm told. I'd been trying to replace my beloved 2001 Silverado for a couple of years, but despite attending many auctions and getting a lot of trade ins, no truck met all the criteria.
I saw this one on a pre-sale list for an auction I regularly attend in Fort Lauderdale, and liked that it was a new car trade in the same color as my old truck, and the same (mostly) body style, and 4WD, and most importantly a 2500HD. I needed to tow, and the HD was where it was at.
What I didn't realize at the time was that the truck was diesel - it wasn't mentioned in the presale report, and I didn't look close enough at the CarFax - I had figured it for the 6.0 liter gas engine.
I was hesitant to buy a diesel, because my friends owned them, and always seemed to be $5K away from making them "bulletproof." Despite this, I bought it anyway, and have been thrilled with how it's going.
As luck would have it, it turns out the 2006 and 2007 HD trucks with the LBZ diesel and Allison transmission are considered to be excellent for tuning and reliability, and are highly valued and sought after today. Seems I got lucky.

I built these trucks at GM Pontiac, MI. So nice to see one still going! I put a lot of these together that's for sure. 440 per 8hr shift. I was there during the changeover to these trucks. It was a pretty big event for us.
This one looks fantastic. Being from Michigan, almost every one of these I see anymore is missing the tailgate latch cover, rusting out rockers. This looks like new compared to the ones up here.

@@cesarlaso356 well the drivetrain may be fine but if it's a 07-13 the dash is broke, it has electrical issues, and all the buttons are rubbed off. Not to mention the door handles break, and if you lean on it it dents it. And if you back into an orange cone it bends the bumper over onto the bedside, bending it in and over the tailgate, then when you open the tailgate it bends the corner! Lol

You've got a keeper! When I was looking for a diesel truck for towing a race car, a friend and accomplished diesel mechanic suggested that I limit my choices to GM 2006 or 2007 Classic - the same truck. Why?
"I never see them." The trubos, by then, were "fixed." These were the last trucks before all the emissions silliness and they had the 6 speed Allison transmissions.
I've had it for a long time, towed all over creation, and used it as a driver from time to time. It is exactly as he said.
Alas, I don't have the screen and have just the mid range upholstery etc. I'll keep it until they wheel me off to "the Home."

Lucked into an 05 Yukon xl myself, truly a great era for GM. That era was a sweet spot for simple, powerful engines, all the right creature comforts without too much useless/obsolete technology. Obviously things are going to go wrong in any old car, but when they do, minor stuff is easy to fix yourself, major stuff is relatively inexpensive and easy for good mechanics to diagnose. That diesel is indeed the grail, keep it maintained and it’ll outrun all of us.

Lovin' your videos, Bill. I just found your channel two weeks ago. I've yet to watch THIS one (currently seeing the MB 560 best convertible vid on my 65" TV), but it's next since, here looking at my laptop, I am being teased by what once was - MY OLD TRUCK.
    Well...almost.
Regrettably, I once HAD a '05 Silverado LS 2500HD, 6.0L, Cashmere Metallic (gold) color with matching A.R.E. topper. I bought it in 2011 with only 23K miles on it. It was a true cream-puff. I LOVED it.
So much so that I sold it in 2017 with only 60k on it.
I regret admitting THAT as I type this. Other financial factors prevailed at the time. I did not know then how highly regarded that truck with that engine was when I did that dastardly deed.
I'm driving a 2020 Ram now, but...WELL...I SO much miss that 2005 Silverado.

I'll be selling one or both of them to buy a Cats Eye Chevy like yours (but the 1500 model, and gasoline, otherwise we have to switch them to right hand drive). Friend had a similar vintage Chevy Duramax, same spec as this one. Looked as clean as this one when he sold it with 300,000 miles on it. And those were HARD miles, most of them were with a 12,000lb 5th wheel hooked on it going thru the mountains of east TN, West Virginia, Virginia, eastern KY, OH, PA. Didn't rust, but he did have a bunch of work done on the motor at around 200k miles(wasn't a total rebuild but I think the heads came off).

The 1500 Extended cabs DID come with the short box from the Crew Cab but they are rare.

This Video has it all and yes the 06 Duramax is a rare find indeed-if it had the "ULTRA RARE MANUAL SHIFT" I would have passed out!! And also throw in the 7 shot Speed loader to make it even better!! Great Job!! Miss the cat's!!

The best truck ever made. Hands down. I have an 05 crew cab and live in the rust belt. I will die with this truck. New ones do nothing for me. Plus I need that money for rust mitigation.

Needs those plate steel bumpers that won’t dent when you look at em. My rear bumper collected dings so I put a steel tube, checker plate and half inch plate bumper on and no one dares tap that one!

Bill look on CZcams for improvements to the lbi engine. They have 4 inch exhaust aftermarket that will let the engine breathe better and possibly get better fuel mileage. Also there are upgrades two the air induction system that are recommended. Because of the sheer numbers of these trucks there’s been a ton of aftermarket parts for improvement

I'm the original owner of an 06 LBZ 2500 crew cab.....Because most of my working career was spent driving company provided trucks....My 06 only has 103,000 miles on it....Un-tuned just have done maintenance and care.....Check your front wheel bearings and make sure all the fluids are good....Use a fuel lubricant additive like Lucas...I was using another famous brand that comes in a silver can but, noticed around 97K miles that my truck seemed to be idiling rich with diesel smell....Think the injectors have gotten kind of sticky....I get offers to buy it all the time but, this one is going to the grave with me....The LBZ is the best DuraMax ever....No DEF BS on it! I get around 17-19MPG towing an open car trailer with a 4000lb car on it....With a 20ft enclosed cargo trailer @ 7000lbs....Mileage drops to 14-16 best towing truck ever.
