Wuppertal Zoo: Elephant GUS 🐘 dental care & blood draw | zoos.media

At Wuppertal Zoo, elephant Gus receives special dental care and is trained for blood draw in protected contact. The responsible deputy team leader Vanessa Hagedorn explains what’s behind it.

Gus was born on April 20, 2019, at Wuppertal Zoo. He is the son of Sabie, who was born wild in Kruger National Park around 1992 and arrived at Wuppertal Zoo in 1995. Gus was named after the long-time elephant keeper Gustav Roeckener. Gus has already shown himself to be a playful uncle in Wuppertal.
Over time, Gus had some dental problems. This is not unusual for elephants. Unfortunately, this is too often why elephants don't survive in the wild. Fortunately, in human care, you can help the animals in time. We had already reported on this before.

This update now shows that Gus is on a great path and is even making further training progress. He learns at the same time in protected and free contact. This means he can seamlessly transition into protected contact if he comes into contact with several mother lines for conservation breeding.
