Well, the elephant management in Wuppertal Zoo relies on love and trust in each other - most elephants know their keepers from their first day of life on. In Germany, it's a safety requirement to have the hook with you. In Wuppertal, they use the hook as a guide, nothing more. It's really important to express, that a hook is nothing you can control an elephant with like with a remote control or something like this. It's a tool of a keeper to communicate with the elephant. Everyone, who uses that in a different way, like to try to force the animal with it or try to show some dominance or something like this, will fail. Also, the term "control" is difficult with elephants: as a keeper, you can ask the animal to do something, and when the relationship is good, it will do that because the animal wants that. You won't be able to ever control an animal really. That's an illusion from the old days. You work with elephants and when the elephants don't want to work with you, that's fine as well. People used to think that you have to be able to control animals to work safely but decades of experience showed us - even in more dangerous animals like tigers or lions - that you have to be kind of the animals' best friend and that's much better for animals as well as every human's and animal's safety.
