At Wuppertal Zoo, the female elephants live with their offspring in free contact with the keepers. Filipe von Gilsa and Vanessa Hagedorn explain how they use the hook.
There are a lot of misunderstandings about the elephant hook because anti-zoo activists and animal rights organizations have repeatedly misinformed about this important training tool. Reason enough to ask the real experts.
The responsible team leader, Filipe von Gilsa, explains in the video directly with and on Sweni how the hook is actually used. It is actually a leading instrument, similar to a leash on a dog. This gives the animals guidance and it is important that they are not afraid of it.
The deputy team leader, Vanessa Hagedorn, then explains further the basics of how the elephant hook is used. It is only a supplement to the command with the voice and is used very rarely. In most cases, the voice command is sufficient.
The hook is also not sharp, as some people claim, and this is also demonstrated in the video. It is a so-called "guide" like a leash on a dog. In the hands of professionals, and undoubtedly the zookeepers at the Wuppertal Zoo are experts, both are useful "tools" that facilitate communication with the animals.
The elephant hook is used exclusively for training in the interests of the elephants - just like medical training that makes it easier to keep animals healthy and to research the species. However, the training sessions are also physical and psychological stimuli that contribute to the welfare of the animals. That's why you can see very well how the animals are looking forward to the training in the Wuppertal Zoo.

Hmmm naja ich bin eher kritisch mit dem dierecktem Kontakt da die Pfleger die ganze Zeit unter hoher gefahr stehen...es gab ja auch schon einige Unfälle (es muss ja nicht am Tier liegen aber Fehler etc. Können und passieren auch öfter)

Die Pfleger können jederzeit selbst entscheiden wie sie sich welche Gefahr aussetzen, es sind alles erwachsene Menschen. Im direkten Kontakt mit jedem Tier besteht aber immer eine Gefahr - auch das darf man nicht vergessen. Auch Hunde können töten und tun das in Deutschland weit öfter als Elefanten, wenn man mal die Fälle zählt. Auch im Straßenverkehr passieren Unfälle und man hört deshalb auch nicht auf, Auto zu fahren.
Die Zeiten, wo man pro Elefantenbulle mit einem toten Pfleger rechnen musste, sind auch schon lange vorbei. Man kann die Gefahr heute sehr gut managen. Wenn man so auf Deutschland schaut, gab es mehr tödliche Unfälle mit Großkatzen in geschütztem Kontakt als mit Elefanten in direktem oder freien Kontakt.
Geschützter Kontakt ist nicht der Weisheit letzter Schluss - auch nicht für die Sicherheit: die Experten vor Ort können am besten entscheiden, was für sie und die Tiere besser ist. Elefanten können in beiden Haltungsformen glücklich werden, man muss eben immer sehen, was man am Besten realisieren kann. Da helfen keine ideologischen Diskussionen oder Vorschriften. Die Haltung muss gut sein - welche Kontaktform man dafür nutzt, ist egal, solange man alles notwendige realisieren kann.
