Chainsaw Chain: Sharp vs Dull

- The key to a great cutting saw is the chain.
I have had questions asking how to tell if the chain is dull.
Cutting with a dull chain is hard on the saw, can burn up the clutch, and will heat up the bar to the point that the paint melts off and the steel turns blue/purple.
Here's a few tips on checking your chain, and what to look for.

Mitch is pretty sharp, and his videos are not dull.
My favorite saying is "it only hit the dirt for a second"
That's a funny one alright.
A quick bump in the dirt at 13,500 rpm can be half of the chain getting ruined.
Absolutely the best info right there! I also do the nail thing and i made a living with a saw for 45 years. One thing i can tell you is white knuckle is a real thing! But my point is we never stop learning don't care how old we are or how much experience! My 1st job out of high-school was in Corey and sons log yard right off airport garden there in Port Angeles bumping knots cleaning the hair off the end and bucking logs for the scalers to make them look better for the overseas log buyers! Run a 056 Stihl and there was a 084 to buck the old growth Spruce and Cedar!
Good info Mitch. I never thought of the fingernail inspection.
It's the same concept as testing to see if a knife blade is sharp. I find it handy.
Wish I’d discovered you a bit ago, informative and instructional without the BS 😅
video is spot on...thumbs up !!
I owe this guy a case of beer...for all the knowledge he has shared...👍
send it to him!
Well said Mitch!🤙🏼
Yes sir ...nail test
Not tried nano yet...but did buy 2 hexa chain at dealership came with free file haven't ran it yet..been cutting huge rounds dirty one from jobs for firewood 130 Rick's so Been trying different hand files .some crazy ones
Square ground is more durable? Or cuts faster ? Wondering the main differences between that and round. Thanks for the info !
I run stihl chains dealership is 5 minutes away. Seems they are hardest so less removed material the better but I fileout gullet with bastard or separate files
Are you hand sharpening the Nano chain? I'm grinding everything else but haven't sharpened my Nano yet.
Yes I hand file the Nano.
@@mitchzenobitrees Thanks.
You should try hand fileing o.43 micro polesaw chain I run it on my top handles. Superior smooth cut but tiny...
What about gullets? Do you think they only improve chipflow, or also chainspeed and thus sharpness?
The gullet is important, the more open the gullet, the more chips it'll hold. It's more important for professional use when time is money. For a homeowner that doesn't cut a whole lot, they'd be blown away by just having a sharp chain.
@@mitchzenobitrees yeah I agree. Always nice to have a perspective from someone else:)
9 minute video for this
If you got bored, I guess the information isn't for you.
@mitchzenobitrees You just do some amount of unnecessary yapping
