winter taco lol for sure though. I used to go once a week one the way home from work to look at every single fish, plant, and hard good to see if there’s anything new I might want. I can’t wait until this is over and I can go back to haunting-I mean browsing the fish store. But I mean technically I am looking for something to buy but then I remember the ol’ wallet is empty lol. I do see moms bringing their kids to look at the fish for fun which would be okay if they would stop stepping in front of me while I’m looking at fish I might actually buy and not abuse lol

@Sheila Bilyeu I don't know how on earth someone can be so incompetent at life that they can't net out fish without killing a bunch. I mean, netting fish isn't easy, but it's not that hard to do it without committing mass murder.

I think everybody does it sometimes. There’s loads of reasons and it’s not exactly hurting anybody. It’s better than impulse buying at a pet shop. Sometimes you might need to go in to see what sort of stuff your local shop has available. Other times you might be looking for something specific. Or you might just realize you weren’t as prepared at home as you thought you were. I’d rather people walk out than buy a pet they’re not able to keep just to save face.

Maybe an interesting fact: That video you mentioned where the dog brushes water onto the fish with its nose is actually an example of caching behavior -- the idea is to brush dirt/other debris over the food item (the fish) to sort of store it for later eating. Of course, dogs will still do this even if there's no dirt present, leading to what looked like the dog trying to help the fish in that video.

Axolotls can be on very fine sand that won't cause impaction :) a bare bottom can actually stress them out as they have nothing to grip onto when walking
If you have no idea what you're doing and it's your first axolotl you can always put a rough surface tile on the bottom that way you don't have to worry about your axolotl having digestion problems and it also won't die from stress either (stress is the number one axolotl killer)
    Hope that helps :)

Can you make an episode of fish you would recommend for small unfiltered ponds? Take freezing temperatures into consideration.
We though about gold fish, but the pond has only roughly 500 litres (130 gallons) and the German laws forbid keeping gold fish in that small size for a reason... so which fish are better choices? They shouldn't grow larger than 15 cm (6 inches). The pond is currently getting a lot of plant growth and these should help keep up the water quality once the plants are fully grown.

Young axolotls do best in bare bottom, as they tend to eat sand more often then not. That looks like an adult axolotl, and they do just fine in sand substrate :) if you are worried, you can use tile in the bottom to make it more pleasing to look at, rather than having a bare bottom tank :)

Some Axolotls like sand, and whenever they get it in their mouth they spit it out. Some eat it and and get impacted, it really depends on the axolotl. a lot of people say bare bottom tanks can stress the axolotl out (i think it depends on the axie) and a lot of people put tile in their tank. :)

Hey, I have been researching axolotls a lot since I want to get one eventually, and I wanted to say you can have sand with an axolotl if it is super fine so if they do eat it they wont have a problem and it will just pass through, just wanted to let you know!

I got taken to the lake recently. I feel bad for my partner they had to watch me nerd out over the wildlife and ecosystem. I even studied the mud and sustainably took a few sprigs of native plants, not gonna lie, the plants from the lake looked waaaaay healthier than any Ive bought tbh. Nature is good even when the lake needs a good clean

I think you would love antscanada ant setups with fish living in them or his fish tank set up, it is really cool looking and all the fish are healthy if you don’t count the random mass death of all is fish in one setup and I believe the cause is still unknown

So: I'm the owner of that axolotl tank and, as I can, I want to share some informations with you all.
As some people have already said, sand work perfectly with axolotls because it can pass trough their gills and their digestive system, so it can't hurt them at all. I've used some river sand as I really don't like the colorful sand that most of american keeper use and I prefer a more natural looking tank.
When it comes to the plants, I should say that you can put without problem some species in your axolotl tank and honestly I think it's the best thing to do: plants will "eat" a lot of waste that those animal produce (and believe me: they can produce A LOT), so you shouldn't do partial water change every week; if you want this to happen, you should use fast-growing plants like Ceratophyllum demersum as Anubias are really cool to see (and axy loves them) but are slow-growing.
For the "lighting problem", it's true: axolotls doesn't like too much light, but if you use the right amount of hides (we use driftwood) and floating plants (such as Pistia, that we use in this tank) and keep your light on for no more then 8 hours, axolotls will not be stressed at all. The worst thing with axolotls it's that unfortunately you should use very strong plants (they loves to sit on them) that don't need too much nutrients and can live in cold water, as in an axolotl tank you shouldn't use any kind of fert or CO2 and water should be kept cold.
So I want to suggest to american keepers to add some plants to their axolotl tanks, because they will look a lot better with them and you will never be bored by a tank that will never be the same for much time (plants obv will grow bigger and bigger). As I said, plants also help you to clean water and add more hides and things to explore for your animals so I hightly recommand to use them!
Last of all, I want to make so much compliments to you Chris as you are always funny, clever and help trough your channel a lot of people with their fish tanks: I'm sure there's a lot of people outside that now have a better tank and happier animals just because of you and this is just awsome. Keep it up!
PS: sorry if I misspelled something, English it's not my native language

So for axolotls yes you can use sand but not for babies and juveniles. Adults are fine with sand but I wouldn't recommend it. Thing is I also wouldn't recommend bare bottom because the axolotl cannot grip to the bottom of the tank. There are some great videos about it on CZcams.

  • @jp_zen3670
    @jp_zen3670 Před 4 lety

Another fun, great video Chris! 💜 The issue with the axolotl tank is not the sand (gravel is what to keep away from). Fine sand helps them grip to walk around apposed to bare bottom. The problem is having lights on for plants; no lights on my axolotl tank 😉🤘🤘

yoooo, might get hate for this, but the beta that I currently have was an impulse buy. now before people tell me I'm a bad fish keeper. that impulse buy is what got me into this hobby. Currently cycling a 9 gal to put said beta into (he is in his 5 gal that he's been in since I got him in October of 2020) I'm happy to say that the 9 gal is full of plants with a large piece of wood with plenty of hiding space as well as a soft inflow from the filter.

Sand if fine for adult axis! They do swallow it but 💩 it right out and it can help with digestion. Anything bigger than sand but smaller then 2x the size of their head is what causes issues 😊 also I'm a Tasha that has an axolotl a lot like that so that was a funny coincidence
