If you want to know how blues turned into rock, then the first names anyone needs to see are Big Mama Thornton, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard, and then Jerry Lee Lewis. Without those names, we wouldn't have rock. All the big names that were pioneers of the genre - Elvis, the Everly brothers, Buddy Holly - they followed the lead of those four. It's no coincidence that several of the Beatles' first songs were Chuck berry covers.

He still lived in the St Louis area before he passed. He'd go to the different casinos and performed at them quite often as well as Blueberry Hill in the Loop in St Louis. There's the Duck Room where he would perform there (pretty much named after the Duck Walk that he'd always do). I met him at the one I worked at, but never went to one of his concerts there. When he was there, we couldn't bother him (which is understandable), but did get to talk to him numerous times when he was there.

chuck berry was the man who turned r&r into teenage americana: highschool, cars and drive ins. with songs like "maybelene," "sweet little 16," "back in the usa," "30 days," "roll over beethoven," "you can't catch me," "little queenie" and "school days" his music celebrated american teenage life in the 50s. he also helped bring the guitar into the forefront of r&r while the sax and the piano were used most often as the go to instruments.
he predated elvis and little richard by about a year. the beatles and the british invasion revived his career and in the 60s he was still writing r&r classics like "let it rock," "you never can tell," "no particular place to go" and "the promised land" which he wrote while in prison. the odd, and sad thing is his only number one hit was a crude novelty song from the early 70s called "my ding-a-ling."
berry songs also made great covers for other artists. the beatles "roll over beethoven," dave edmunds' "the promised land" and linda rondstadt's "back in the usa" are just 3 great examples.

In 1977, NASA launched two spacecraft - Voyager 1 and 2 - to explore Jupiter, Saturn and FAR, FAR BEYOND. Each carried a 12-inch gold plated record that contained music, sounds and images picked to represent the great diversity of life on Earth. The idea was maybe one day extraterrestrial life far away would stumble on the records and learn something from us. Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode'" was embedded with the likes of: Beethoven's; Fifth Symphony; Stravinsky's' Rite of Spring; and Bach's, Brandenburg Concerto No. 2. No other rocker made the cut (not the Beatles, not Elvis, not the Stones, not Hendrix, Joplin, or Morrison). This song is literally "far out" among the stars. Now that's immortality. Who knows, maybe a billion years from now some alien being will be tapping their tentacle to Johnny B. Goode?
