no shit right.lol Chuck Berry,if you are someone that loves rock music. He is the definition of a rock legend and pioneer. I hate bringing it up because it shouldn't matter. But it was the 50's.A black man playing a new style of music that was hated by anyone over 25. I could go on and on.White kids liked the music, that was huge.Because those kids (like my parents) turned into the young adults that started looking past color and worked to change things. So.its about music, but its also so much more.

Bruce and the E Street Band was the house band for the event and played with the likes of Dylan, Berry, Gerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, etc. It was one HELL of a night. I still have the program my dad bought - it's in its original plastic sleeve. Never been opened.

Before Bruce became famous he and his band backed Chuck Berry at a gig as was Chucks routine - to use a local band to back him and pay them $100 or whatever. Just before they started to play Bruce asked Chuck what songs they were going to do. Chuck replied "were gonna do some Chuck Berry songs." (as per Bruce in the film "Hail Hail Rock and Roll.")

The preface to Chuck Berry's autobiography is Bruce Springsteen telling the story of the time when he was just starting out his band ended up being Chuck's backup band. So this isn't the first time he was on stage with Chuck Berry. If anyone out there hasn't read Chuck Berry's autobiography it is definitely worth reading.

The first two songs every guitar player learns are "Smoke on the Water" and "Johnny B. Goode". Every band knows his entire catalog. Chuck never traveled with a band. For every gig the promoter was responsible for hiring the local bar band. Bruce had one of those gigs before he was anybody and always said it was one of the real honors of his career.

*"THE DUCK WALK" This is the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame grand opening concert from 1995 or 96 in Cleveland Ohio, Bruce & the E Street Band were the hosting band and backed many of the stars throughout the evening! Chuck Berry being Springsteen's first Rock N Roll hero, Bruce signed off distribution rights to this video so it could be televised for free.... Who wouldnt mind being seen with their hero?* ... I worked for Chuck Berry 7 or 8 dozen times in the mid-Atlantic states, as a roadie and or stage door security for Mr. Berry... Chuck Berry is the man that gave me the name Mr. Roach that I use today at work and on CZcams... A story goes with that name.

Some trivia- Chuck after the 1960s did not keep a touring band. He'd use "pick-up bands" comprised of local musicians. Before Bruce and E Street were signed and well known, they were one of those pick-up bands! Must have been in the early 70s. Chuck played a NJ date, and they backed him up. WTF? Incredible reunion!

Johnny B. Goode had a Springsteen sound. Bruce probably didn't care if Chuck was the frontman. Bruce was probably was saying to himself, " I'm playing with Chuck Berry!!!!" It was great when you could hear Bruce say, "Go Chuck!!" when Chuck was doing his thing. And it was good when Chuck gave Bruce the stage to do a solo.

Chuck Berry's last album "Chuck" was released in 2017. Chuck died between the announcement of it's recording on his 90th birthday in October 2016 and it's release. It was dedicated to his wife of 68 years, Thelmetta. I think the album is typically fun and upbeat. As much as I admire the last albums of David Bowie and Glen Campbell, I really appreciate the optimism of Chuck Berry. A true icon and just plain fun. You might enjoy the movie "Cadillac Records" about the early days of Chess Records and the early years of people like Chuck Berry, Etta James, Howlin' Wolf, and many others

Chuck Berry and a lot of players got their stage moves from copying older players like T Bone Walker, who originated Berry's "Duck Walk", and played behind his back and with his teeth. If you Google T Bone Walker, and click on images, you'll see a picture of him playing the guitar behind his head while doing the splits. In an interview he said that when he was young, guitarists busking on street corners would try to gather the biggest crowds (and most tips) by outdoing each other with the best guitar stunts.
