Pretty sure Philo's index finger is tucked under the rim and disc pivots around it. He and MJ helped me with grip way back, they both have very similar form.

Reaaaaaly? Now that would be interesting. On his slow mo video he showed a back loaded grip to me. I wonder if it changed or if he changes it during the throw perhaps?

@@OverthrowDiscGolf This is what Philo told me verbatim "When I'm driving a disc, be it a driver, mid range of putter, I focus on the pinch between my thumb and index finger. That is the optimal control point in the grip. That along with the palm of the hand. My thumb is pushing into the rim of the disc on an angle above where my index locks into the inner rim of the disc. this allows my other fingers to fall comfortably in behind the pinching index finger."

@@OverthrowDiscGolf Pretty sure the disc still pivots on his index finger in that grip even though it's relaxed, it's tucked under enough like MJ's and he probably clenches it in more during the throw. Josh Anthon keeps his thumb and index finger off the disc the entire backswing and then pinches them going forward.

If you want to throw like Philo think about mixing a big pot with your throwing hand. Make that huge round circle mixing motion with your left rib and lower abs. By doing it like that you feel this huge flex and stretch on your left rib and lower abs, and also it makes you reach out not "reachback". I hope you guys understand what I mean.

I would point out that the downward motion of hips is not a function of anything other than the stretch of the plant foot. The further out it plants the further the hips will go down. An extreme example of this would be a gymnast who will eventually get to a full split and have the hips inches off the ground. Point here I suppose is that that the drop of the hips is not something we should actively think about

I think Philo is just not using enough of his lower body to gain power. I suggest you to watch videos of Kristian Kuoksa, he is the master of using lower body to gain power and speed to the throw.
Kristian has couple of videos on youtube throwing over 700ft and one where he breaks his own record and throws 780ft. When the throws 500ft it doesn't even look like he is trying.
