DIY Floating Table: Building Without Jointer or Thickness Planer

- I'd been meaning to make this floating table since we moved into the house, but kept on putting it off. I made the table with mostly the tools that I had, no jointer and no thickness planer. It did not go smoothly. But I got there in the end and I (and my wife) are happy with the result.

I cannot tell you how many times I've had to rip out seams, toss batter, and unravel and reknit. You are learning, honing skills and appreciate good craft work. FYI I think the table looks great. I love how the table flows with the shelve, that's impressive.

Good lord, how many hours a decent Jointer can save me. If only my father has the mindset to not force his tool beyond it's recommended usage, we might have a Jointer and a Bandsaw instead of three dead Hand Planer, one dead cicular saw, one burned out cordless hand drill ( old model, without any spareparts available anymore ) and one cracked hand grinder.
Anyway, ranting aside.

I'm here to say I like the table. I know you had a care factor factor going on, but tables are hard. I like the floating table top effect. I have a very large Tasmanian blackwood table made by my father (3 m x 1.5 m) nearly 40 years ago. It was influenced by the brutalist archicture of the time and I have always loved it. It is super solid and needs at least 3 people to even lift it. It was built as the "everyday table", but it doubles as my desk and dining table. The great thing is that the "mistakes" made by my father make me feel close to him 40 years later. Revel in your learning experience!
Thank you, yes, I probably could have made a more simple table for my first attempt, but now that it's done I'm happy with it, have learnt a lot and look forward to making another one, one day.

Glad you could use my method of joining long boards with the tracksaw. My heart sank when you had your router mishap. I think I would have thrown a tool or two.

Nice work, Jaya. Your carpentry skills have gotten quite impressive over the last few years. And once again, I’m surprised by just how many similarities there are between our two houses. Your dining room table (along with the room decor) looks a lot like ours…right down to the posts you had to fit it between. In contrast though, we cut a notch into the end of ours so it actually fits around the post. (My idea. Surprised my wife went for it.) The other major difference is… that we got our carpenter to make it for us. So again, I’m impressed by your skills. お疲れさまでした！ 🍻

@@W4iteFlame You CAN actually detach it from the post, but it’s a bit of a pain, so the table usually stays where it is. (It is kind of a unique design… maybe I’ll show it off in a future upload? 😆)

@@TokyoLlama Ask around town to see if any woodworking shops have a thickness planer that is wide enough for your project. The result would be the same, alot cheaper and alot less stress.

The final version of that is a wooden work of art. No telling how long a table made that way will last.

That is an absolutely gorgeous table. I watched the bench video first and am in continuous awe at your talent. The style of furniture is timeless, too. I can only imagine how good these pieces will look in 50 years time! You are an inspiration, really. I want to make something now haha! At the moment I'm just trying my best with cutting skirting boards for a room with bare brick walls which is trouble enough for my skill level. :D

You sell yourself short. I watched the link to your inspiration table and the builder was indeed a true craftsman, but so sir are you.
A true craftsman makes the most of the resources available to him/her and you did just that. You came up with solutions to problems with what you had available and persevered. The result is beautiful and I love the story that goes along with the idiosyncrasies of your result. It is a true family treasure. Very good job! The home builder that built your house must be so happy to have people as caring as you and your family living in the house he built. I'm so happy for both of you that you know each other.

Amazing video! What I loved was that you were incorporating so much from what you learnt as well as the wooden nail-less style (which led to how the house was built to begin with). It gives a really nice touch to your carpentry work. Your videos really give a lot of inspiration and exudes the hard work and grit you are willing to go through to make something. It just makes people happy and tickles the DIY spirit! I never get tired of watching your videos, funnily enough haha.
Thanks, yes, I tried to use screws as little as possible. The only metal is for the screws and threads holding the tabletop to the frame but I figured since Ishitani did it like that, it was alright!

Ishitani - GREAT inspiration. I assume by now you have discovered that the problem with the router is the bit collar loosening on you and allowing the bit to slip. Give it a good cleaning to get rid of the sap and other flotsam clogging the router collet and the bit shank. Then stop occasionally to reassure that the collet is still tight on the bit. I assumed that you would resort to using hand planes to do most of your smoothing. Surprise - you didn't. Using hand planes to do reduction of major warps and cupping can speed the thicknessing process. Glad to see you back on CZcams.
Thanks, yes, I didn't realise that the flotsam and jetsam in the collar would have such a big effect as I made sure it was tight before using. Lesson learned (after making the same mistake twice...) In regards to hand planes, I wanted to use them more, but mine was blunt, and then when I researched how to sharpen Japanese hand planes... to be honest I got lazy, so tried to rely on the sander.

Is good that you show exactly how DIY projects come out. Usually youtubers make them look super easy! In the process of doing something for the very first time we make lots of mistakes and is really hard when you don't have the right tools.
Some years ago I made a wooden doll house using almost Neanderthal tools and it took so much time and effort..

I’ve been making table tops for years and all I use is a planner and a good belt sander and I join it the same with biscuits and the bit in the router
You just work the top down with the planer then belt sand it to with in an inch of its life
When you getting that roof above you fixed 👍👍👍🇦🇺

I think you have done a fantastic job on the house, and I really like your other videos about Japan and various rabbit holes. Please keep it up.
Ever since you brought up your idea about how you want the dinner table, I've been so anxious about when you'll build it. It was worth the wait! The table came out beautiful! Like some have said in the comments, "don't sell yourself short." You did a magnificent job and only you, the builder, know the imperfections and nobody needs to know. Hahaha! But you can definitely come back to it later to make any adjustments.

The floating table top is a fantastic design feature on this piece. Awesome work. One thing is the knotty boards stand out. Something to think about is laminating the top with an interesting natural wood. Maybe a cherry or maple. That might be a super contrast to all the cyprus in the kitchen. Lovely work as is to be sure.

I have been a wood working hobbyist myself for 7 years and have had similar troubles with my routers. My problems were caused by the collet and bit shank being different sizes. In one case I had a 1/2" collet and a 12mm shank bit.
On my palm router I had the original collet that was always too tight. I ordered a new 1/4" collet and it fixed the problem. Collets can be ordered in imperial or metric and are inter-changeable. Love your videos!
Thanks! I have both the 1/2" and 12mm collets, so that wasn't the problem, but others have pointed out that dust in the collet was likely the main cause.
Love the entire series. I admire the skill and patience to get these skills in the first place. I‘m the kind of guy that would spend huge amounts to pay other people to do it for me.
That’s a fair enough thing to do - given the time spent doing this you have to enjoy it for it to be worth it I think.

The most important thing. Dose the cat like it? Nice work, I can relate to the planing bits drifting down in the collet. If the collet nut is not tightened that will happen. But that is the ease answer. If there is saw dust packed into the cuts in the collet this can prevent you from being able to properly tighten the collet nut. I have had this issue with both routers and, even worse, CNC routers. Hope this information helps and keep up the beautiful work on restoring that house. Got to keep that cat happy.😀
The cats are not allowed to touch it! Thanks - it seems that was the most likely reason for the slipping. I did blow dust out but not particularly carefully.
The best thing about it is you made it to fit and match the house and your family. The light hits the wood matching the rest of the kitchen perfectly. The design is very neat!

The table turned out beautifully, and the wood grains are gorgeous. What I liked the most was that you used materials you already had on hand before deciding that you needed to buy a bit more to finish the project. "If at first you don't succeed, try try again". Making mistakes is all part of learning, and your woodworking skills are showing more and more improvement. Keep it up!!!
you should be proud of yourself you did a great job it all worked out in the end and like you have said many times you are not a professional carpenter but i think from what i have seen you have come a ong way your carpentry skills have improved immensely since i hav been watching your videos. don't be so hard on yourself and alays remember the carpenters rule measure twice cut once.
