    Your decision to maintain a lawn like that (in Japan!) is a bold one. Some other foreign residents in my area have attempted that feat, but no one has actually succeeded yet. (Basically, they get lazy at some point in the weeds take over). All the best with that! Anyway, you really have created an awesome space there for you and your family. Nice work!

    • @TokyoLlama
      @TokyoLlama  Před 2 lety +115

      Thanks, I may switch to a Japanese grass at some point as a well-maintained one maintains its thickness in summer and will be less susceptible to weeds, possibly.

      That's how you spot an Aussies house in Japan .... they have a lawn ! The neighbors walk past and laugh at the Aussie mowing the lawn in summer every 2 weeks but they themselves spend days weedwacking /brushcutting their own overgrown Japanese style "Jungle" . I think the Aussies do have the last laugh. He who laughs last laughs the hardest and has time for refreshments ;-)

    • @TokyoLlama

      @@TokyoLlama Hey mate, for the lawns you need to start spraying stuff down to prevent your issues. I can give you the basic names of some Australian consumer stuff from Bunnings if that helps. To stop Poa: Winter Grass Killer or barricade weed killer for pros. To stop the Fungus: Mancozeb. You need to put this down before prolonged periods of rain. To stop the general weeds: kill w/ Bindie or casper for pros and then prevent with a PreEmergent: Freehand or casper for pros; basically gives a 3 month barrier. For the army worms, there are many different types of products that will kill and protect against grubs, don't rely on the birds! Also look up the soapy water test to detect earlier. Here's to the best lawn in town!

    • @TokyoLlama
      @TokyoLlama  Před 2 lety +59

      Thanks mate, I don't think they've got the same brands here but I'll look up the ingredients to see if they've got similar products. Watching Japanese lawn CZcams I realised that I needed to aerate, dethatch and treat the lawn before the rainy season, they also suggest a few products which I'll check out.

    It's rough to see your struggle with the lawn, you should look up micro clover, it doesn't need nitrogen since it produces it for itself. Its weed resistant and doesn't require large amounts of water to stay green.

    • @OllamhDrab
      @OllamhDrab Před 2 lety +7

    Loving everything so far. Just some suggestions that were made for me when I purchased my home. Because here in Sydney we don’t have large backyards, when a friend of mine saw the land we bought just outside Sydney he suggested the following:
    1- purchase 2-3 chickens and 1 rooster. They maintain the lawn by eating all the grubs. They also provide an egg every day or every second day so you’ll have a minimum of 2-3 eggs fresh daily.
    2- go hard on purchasing the best bee hive possible. I got the Flowhive made here in Australia. It’s pricey but it’s well worth it the money. It’ll last you a lifetime and doesn’t require smoking the bees to extract honey. It had a simple key and lock mechanism meaning you’ve got honey on tap and don’t need to bother those hard working bees.
    They also maintain your fruit bearing trees and all your flowers and veggies by pollinating them with the seasons.
    The bees literally require no work at all. Just need to take your honey once every 3 months. And the chickens are super easy. Just gotta watch for fleas but there’s nothing some organic flea spray can’t fix.

    • @TokyoLlama
      @TokyoLlama  Před 2 lety +12

      Thanks, chickens definitely in our plans, hope to build a coop next year. Funny you mention flow hive, a friend has also suggested it to me and I’m definitely keen. Possibly another project for next year too - just need to get on top of a few other things first.

    The yard is really shaping up! I bet some daffodils and other bulbs would be a good way to add more color in between existing plants. By the time the existing plants start waking up and actively growing the spring bulbs will be going over and the summer bulbs will be getting into the swing of things. Having video of the garden in every month of the year really helps you to know what you need to add to have color at every month during the year.

    Bought a little Yuzu tree for my little garden 1 year ago in Germany (yes, I could actually buy a YUZU in GERMANY!). This tree is kind of holy to me but no-one around me understands what it is and why I love it. 😢
    I am glad you produced this video. Now I don’t feel lonely any longer. ❤️

    You have done marvelous jobs with the yard. I live in North Carolina. It has mild winter but hot and humid summer. We had fescue, cool-season grass, but had problems with weeds and fungus. Finally we cleaned out all the fescues and put down zoysia, warm-season grass. Now we have beautiful thick lawns with no watering need. There should be type of grass more suitable for your area. Improving drainage of the area, and PH of the soil is also important for the healthy grow of the grass. Good luck. Looking forward to your next video. Love from America

    Epsom salt takes care of the catterpillars and also make your grass a deep green but beware, it will grow like crazy. We also feed our fruit trees a hand full of epsom salts when they are about to get into fruit, it is like a pregnant woman, they need a whole lot of feed whilst carrying and it makes the fruit extra juicy and full of taste. Love your show

    I can't get over how great everything has turned out. It also helps that you have a seemingly natural talent when it comes to wood & lawn work. I know the struggle of maintaining a lawn and envy all the care and dedication you put into it.
    Also as a side note, I like how you didn't mention how nightmarishly humid Japan gets in the summer. I could only last an hour outside two years ago when I stayed in Asaka.
