As a Chicago fan, I’m very disappointed in their omission to this video. If you had actually learned the history of the logo, you would know that there are no racist undertones to it. The logo and name “Blackhawk” is to honor the owners military division during WWI. Chicago has also come out with full support of Native American groups, going as far to ban headdresses from the United Center. Do better, Bardown.
It's named after the owners military division yes, but it's still stealing the likeness of native imagery which is racist whether you like it or not, and the Blackhawks haven't had native support since 2018, as a Chicago fan, Bar down has every right to exclude them, especially with the sexual assault case really not helping their publicity, Chicago needs to change, they can go like Portland and we get an even doper logo from it.
I’ve been a diehard Wings fan my whole life and I can confidently say that Chicago’s logo is one of, if not the best in all of sports. Also, the team has come out in support of Native’s and has done work to raise awareness for those cultures. I love Bardown, but this wasn’t the move.
When that logo was created the blackhawks (people it’s based on) were in support of it. The only people who aren’t in support are money hungry people who have nothing to do with the logo.

I'm Australian, I started following hockey in late 2018 after watching a biggest hits and shootout highlight reel. When it came to picking a team I literally picked the redwings because their logo looked the best (and because I saw a lot of datsyuk highlights). I soon realised I had picked then right at the bottom. But I've stuck with them ever since and now I am fully trusting the yzerplan.

The Blackhawks name is not named after the tribe, but a WW1 division- the Blackhawk division- that the owner fought in. The division itself is named after a Sauk Chief named Black Hawk. The team’s name was for a long time, two words (Black Hawks) but later changed after documents were found with the original name as only one word. And considering the team has gone to great lengths to go to insure that the logo is as inoffensive as possible, talking to local Indigenous leaders to create a logo that commemorates and treats indigenous peoples with the respect they deserve, I don’t really understand why the hawks are being put on the same level as Cleveland or Washington.

I have no allegiance to the Flyers, but their logo is sick! My initial reaction on looks alone was that it was a contender for the best, but it doesn’t incorporate any clever nods to the city’s culture like some other logos do, so I think it’s Solid A. Total whiff on that ranking from the squad!

The Canadiens logo is hockey. That logo can never change. It’s simple but excellent. It’s an A. The Bruins and Rangers are both C’s. Nothing special. The Islanders logo is sweet with the Y used as a hockey stick.. something deliciously retro about it. Calgary is good… the Wild, Sabres, Oilers, Leafs, Wings, Blackhawks are all A’s. The North Stars had a great logo back in the day.. but my favorite one was the Whalers. Perfection.

Chicago's logo is nostalgic and has been approved by the native Americans at the introduction of the logo. Look at the history of the logos and how they came about and get educated.
The first owner of the hawks served in the Blackhawk division in WW1. This division was named after Chief Blackhawk. His story cannot be covered in a simple CZcams comment. But to say that the logo was made in disrespect of a minority is not just laughable it’s ignorant.

Based on aesthetics, *off* a jersey, I think Chicago, Detroit, Colorado, Minnesota, Vancouver, Pittsburgh, Arizona (as the Kachina), Toronto, Vegas, and Seattle all look good. *On* a jersey, the Habs, Isles, Sabs, and Caps look good. Some of the teams have different variants of their logos that look better, and can very from a simple color change to a complete color change. For example: Vancouver's logo looks way better when the bottom half of the C is white, and as a complete color change, Edmonton's two-tone alt. is great.

You do realize that Black Hawk and his entire community were victims of a genocidal slaughter called the 'Black Hawk War' that involved the US army and territorial militias chasing down Black Hawk's band, including women and children, with gatling guns. Lots information here that is very true and very relevant about the logo. It was meant to be respectful, but also, not made by the actual tribe. . One thing we should also consider is the Blackhawk tribe themselves. As a blackhawks fan and friend to a family of Blackhawk Native Americans- I can tell you that a large majority of the tribe loves the name and logo..- From what I’m told anyway. But there are still some who don’t like like it. I am OK with it being changed and I think it will be someday. I completely understand why people find it offensive. But again this should be up to the Blackhawk tribe. It’s okay they don’t include it - but please include CHI in alternate logos.

@@baronbayne9899 I see your point. For me its hard to remove the history from the logo. Just browsing each logo quickly my eye fixes on the hawks because of the use and vibrancy of colours. Most other logos except the wild have at most three colours. I showed each logo to my GF (who knows nothing about NHL) and she thought the Coyotes was the best, then Penguins and Sharks. Take that to mean she likes animals but she did not like the Hawks logo.

As an Islanders fan, i think the logo is overlooked because the subtle things are always missed. The 4 stripes on the stick representing the 4 cups from the dynasty team and the "I" in islanders is placed on long island where the nassau coliseum is geographically located

My personal critiques and what I would change. The Devils and the Flames logos should be elevated to the best -- especially when you look at the sketch of the Jersey Devil. Boston, Buffalo, Rangers, and St. Louis should be elevated to A tier. Flyers should move to B tier -- I was quite surprised when I realized that was a "P".
I am so glad the sharks logo was given the credit it deserves. One tier list that I would love to see would be one where you guys rank the best logos from each team's history and see which one is best. We all know the correct answer is the Whalers logo. That thing is so dope. Great video everyone!
The canes logo is weird because I never imagine it on a jersey, mostly because the never wear it. I just think of it as center ice, the hurricane warning flags though are sick, and every time I’ve been to a game in the past 5 years they just where that logo.

@Adventures With Mongos there is no Blackhawk tribe… the team was named for the original owners WW1 division (Blackhawk division). Which got its name from Chief Black Hawk of the Sauk Tribe. He had a lot of accomplishments like fighting against the British…. If you’re accusing people of not knowing the history you should probably do some homework too.
I have no problem with the team keeping the Blackhawks name, as others have said, its based on the original owners WW1 division name, which was named after a well known Chief from the Illinois area. That being said, the logo is a goofy caricature of an Native American and I understand why some consider it offensive. If Blackhawks is for a WW1 division anyways, why not switch the logo to the awesome one that looks like a hawks head with the same colour scheme someone designed a few years ago? It looks awesome, and isn't offending anyone.

All of the detail in the current Maple Leafs logo has a meaning behind it. The Logo has 31 points as a nod to when the Maple Leaf Gardens' opened in 1931. It also has 17 veins to represent the founding of the franchise in 1917, & 13 of those veins are at the top of the crest to commemorate the Maple Leafs 13 Stanley Cup wins. The Maple Leafs name itself was originally chosen by Conn Smythe because of the Maple Leaf Badge the soldiers of the Canadian Army wore in WW1, which is why when following the rules of proper nouns they are referred to as Leafs & not Leaves.

As a Kings fan, I can't argue. Kings have alot of sicker older logos/style. The chevron, OG crown, Purple and black crown, Hell i'll take the Burger King logo too! Just comparing old jerseys and the colors we use to use, our current home jerseys are dull. My interpretation is that the Shield is for the fans to wear, we defend the city as the Kings play for us, either way, no way higher than a C at best.

It is no way at the same level as Buffalo or St. Louis, not even close. Also, the Oilers logo is worse than a C. People might think it's iconic because Gretzky and Messier and company won a lot of cups wearing it, but essentially the logo is a bright orange raindrop with the team name stretched out to fit into a circle. It's mediocre. On the other hand, the Houston Oilers had a cool logo. If Edmonton decided to make an oil rig style logo and incorporated an E and some hockey sticks into it that would be so much better than their current logo. I would switch the Oilers and Stars, and I would also switch the Predators and the Flyers, and maybe bump down the Leafs logo. Otherwise, it's a pretty good list.

I’ve been a diehard Wings fan my whole life and I can confidently say that Chicago’s logo is one of, if not the best in all of sports. Also, the team has come out in support of Native’s and has done work to raise awareness for those cultures. I love Bardown, but this wasn’t the move.

I'm Australian, I started following hockey in late 2018 after watching a biggest hits and shootout highlight reel. When it came to picking a team I literally picked the redwings because their logo looked the best (and because I saw a lot of datsyuk highlights). I soon realised I had picked then right at the bottom. But I've stuck with them ever since and now I am fully trusting the yzerplan.

The Blackhawks name is not named after the tribe, but a WW1 division- the Blackhawk division- that the owner fought in. The division itself is named after a Sauk Chief named Black Hawk. The team’s name was for a long time, two words (Black Hawks) but later changed after documents were found with the original name as only one word. And considering the team has gone to great lengths to go to insure that the logo is as inoffensive as possible, talking to local Indigenous leaders to create a logo that commemorates and treats indigenous peoples with the respect they deserve, I don’t really understand why the hawks are being put on the same level as Cleveland or Washington.

The North Stars had a great logo back in the day.. but my favorite one was the Whalers. Perfection.

Based on aesthetics, *off* a jersey, I think Chicago, Detroit, Colorado, Minnesota, Vancouver, Pittsburgh, Arizona (as the Kachina), Toronto, Vegas, and Seattle all look good. *On* a jersey, the Habs, Isles, Sabs, and Caps look good. Some of the teams have different variants of their logos that look better, and can very from a simple color change to a complete color change. For example: Vancouver's logo looks way better when the bottom half of the C is white, and as a complete color change, Edmonton's two-tone alt. is great.

One thing we should also consider is the Blackhawk tribe themselves. But there are still some who don’t like like it. I am OK with it being changed and I think it will be someday. I completely understand why people find it offensive. Most other logos except the wild have at most three colours. I showed each logo to my GF (who knows nothing about NHL) and she thought the Coyotes was the best, then Penguins and Sharks. Take that to mean she likes animals but she did not like the Hawks logo.

All of the detail in the current Maple Leafs logo has a meaning behind it. The Logo has 31 points as a nod to when the Maple Leaf Gardens' opened in 1931. It also has 17 veins to represent the founding of the franchise in 1917, & 13 of those veins are at the top of the crest to commemorate the Maple Leafs 13 Stanley Cup wins. The Maple Leafs name itself was originally chosen by Conn Smythe because of the Maple Leaf Badge the soldiers of the Canadian Army wore in WW1, which is why when following the rules of proper nouns they are referred to as Leafs & not Leaves.

The senator's logo is a combination of a Roman centurion (general) and a Spartan shield design. Neither are "senator" iconography but totally understand why they chose to go this route

As a Panthers fan, I originally hated this logo, but it has honestly grown on me a lot. I think it’s more because are uniforms are much better than the ones with the old logo, but still has grown on me

It doesn't. Indigenous people have historically come forward saying the logo is offensive. There are ways to honor Indigenous cultures without turning their people into a tokenised mascot.

As a Kings fan, I can't argue. Kings have alot of sicker older logos/style. The chevron, OG crown, Purple and black crown, Hell i'll take the Burger King logo too! Just comparing old jerseys and the colors we use to use, our current home jerseys are dull. My interpretation is that the Shield is for the fans to wear, we defend the city as the Kings play for us, either way, no way higher than a C at best.

Jesse is 100% correct with his take on the Rangers. It's a D at best. If it's so iconic, how come they don't use it on any jersey, not even as a shoulder patch? It is no way at the same level as Buffalo or St. Louis, not even close.
Also, the Oilers logo is worse than a C. People might think it's iconic because Gretzky and Messier and company won a lot of cups wearing it, but essentially the logo is a bright orange raindrop with the team name stretched out to fit into a circle. It's mediocre. On the other hand, the Houston Oilers had a cool logo. If Edmonton decided to make an oil rig style logo and incorporated an E and some hockey sticks into it that would be so much better than their current logo. I would switch the Oilers and Stars, and I would also switch the Predators and the Flyers, and maybe bump down the Leafs logo. Otherwise, it's a pretty good list.

I think it could have been cool to talk about the Chicago Blackhawks logo, its history, and why local indigenous groups want it changed. I feel like its important to talk about these things rather than avoiding the topics and letting the yahoos control the conversation by screeching about people being too sensitive or whatever.

@@McRad69 Yes they do, there are multiple articles you can find from places like the Chicago Tribune stating that local groups like the American Indian Center of Chicago have come out with statements requesting the name and logo be changed. And these are groups that have worked and met with the team in the past.

29:17 It's called the "Leafs" because the team is named after the Maple Leaf Regiment that fought in WW1 that Conn Smyth was a part of and the "Leaf" is actually the badge that they wore, not a maple leaf from a maple tree. That's why it is the "Leafs" and the "Leaves".
