Nintendo Switch - OLED Model Review

- Nintendo Switch OLED model review by Taylor Lyles. The Nintendo Switch OLED model does enough right to make this mid-generation refresh worth the $50-$150 premium over the older models, assuming you don't already have a Switch. At the same time, that $50 premium does not make sense for Switch owners who only (or even primarily) intend to play games in docked mode.
#IGN #NintendoSwitch - Věda a technologie
If the joycon is not drifting, it’s not the real Switch experience.
Its not OLED, if the screen doesnt burn in.
“There is no joycon drift!”
If the games don't look like ps2 games, it's not the real switch experience
If it ain't 720p it ain't next gen
It's not a handheld if you don't break your neck looking down at it
I’ve owned both. My friend has a gen1 2017. Side by side the display is a new world. Like the difference between crt and LCD TVs. It’s exactly 3mm larger than a normal switch. As long as your case isn’t super tight it will fit an OLED. The screen is also much brighter. Volume sounds better at lower levels but that may be subjective. The kickstand is (chef’s kiss). The dock still scratches the screen. The joycon fit much tighter even with 4 year old joycon. When docked it’s impossible to tell them apart. If you need a switch and have $350 this is a no-brainer. If you need a switch and don’t care about connecting to tv get a lite. If you already have a switch, don’t upgrade unless you game portable all the time. Hope this helps.

Best review I’ve ever heard ever
Thanks this really helped 😊
This is honestly a better review than the actual review in the video. I've had both versions as well, anyone that's trying to decide whether to buy the OLED or upgrade from the old model, listen to this person, they know what they're talking about.
How’s battery life?
In short it’s not worth the price if you already have a switch
Yes
Word, waiting for the super switch or switch 2, folders, dynamic themes, 4k, bluetooth dolby atmos, netflix, web browser...
A fact!
@@dantecasanova6120 Bluetooth is already on the switch
@@grimsquad273 🤣
Battery life? Current price comparisons? Drift present in the tests? How do it behave regarding games and data migration? You know, really hard and unimportant stuff to talk about in a review.
Battery life is the same as the v2 model.
Drift presents in any joycon.
Drift is exactly the same, the joycons haven't changed and neither has the internals so games and data migration is the same as if it was 2 normal switchs
@@Jaxv3r Trivial maybe, but I'd say it has the risk of being present in any JoyCon. Not every JoyCon has a drift.
the only thing that was clear in this Review is that she has an iPhone 13 pro 🤣
Just got this for my 15 year old daughter for Christmas hope she likes it
She is gunna love it! Awesome stuff
To be honest like she said, If you already owned an Original switch, theres no point in getting this since basically it doesn't improved anything on the specs department (hardware capabilities) like it happened with the PS4pro and the XBoxOneX. This is more for the people who never got a chance to get the Switch in the first place
Or people who bought at launch like me who's battery is getting a little tired, I've sold my launch version so it halved the price of this one 😅 I was about to buy a red box version before they announced this, then just decided to wait...
There is a better kickstand and ethernet port on the dock and I've had an original Switch but now I'm getting this beacuse of those reasons, it's not only about hardware
@@fplbreakfast6463 TRUE
Not true at all. The increased storage is a major difference. As well as the better quality all around. I’ve had my switch since 2018 so I’m getting improvements in every category

they describe it like a 6-7 but wash their hands with an 8 for the final score.
IGN in a nutshell tho
If it sounds like a 6/7 to you, but it gets an 8, that probably means it'll be a 6/7 for you. That's how reviews works.
@Roland Reichenbach smash brothers smh
My thoughts exactly. The score was NOT justified from what the review said
I’ll just keep playing my Switch docked on my OLED TV.
You don’t get the vivid option on the old switch to use on your tv lmao
@@leookamisenpai17 Still looks better on an oled than an lcd
@@leookamisenpai17 My TV has an extra saturated video mode lmao
OLED always looks better up close and personal, easier to see the vivid colors the closer you are to the screen.
@@niarazu3883
Not really. Switch games definitely look best of a nice Samsung OLED panel being upscaled to 4K. More screen space allows for more visibility to detail.
Yo Taylor great job with the video!! Recording a video like this for the first time's gotta be difficult but for a first go at it you did great :) Looking forward to more journalism from you

I’ve never had a Switch before and I’m really interested in the bigger OLED version.
It says a lot when your favorite thing about it is a new kickstand lol
“8/10 would use kickstand again and again.”
She said besides the new display
8 seems a bit high guys...did the new kickstand really tack on an extra 2 points?
Probably the bigger, better, brighter OLED display.
No, but the extra cash that Nintendo pays them under the table to make this review does!
8 as a whole. like as a console itself. not as an upgrade to the standard switch.
@@TequilaMockingBird91 true
Our dock constantly has trouble of detecting the switch, but not actually sending video to the TV. Any time we go on vacation for a week we spend 30 minutes or longer trying to get the switch and dock talking to each other again. I'm really hoping that the new dock fixes this issue. The (hopefully) fixed dock and improved kickstand are two things that will likely have us upgrading our switch, but the fact that it may not work with our collection of Labos has me really worried. There's a reasonable chance we'll end up having to keep our existing switch around just for playing with Labo.
This isn’t a dock problem, it’s a switch problem. It sounds like your USB port is malfunctioning. It is serviceable, but you’re looking at around $100 to fix it. This fix cannot be done on a new OLED model. This can only be done on the LCD model.
To note, if they did bump up the resolution to 1080p, they would also have to bump up the specs, which they didn't seem to want to do for some reason.
that's because they want to make the switch lasts for many more years, we'll probably see a new model in 2023/2024
battery life
Thank goodness they did NOT update the specs. We do NOT want that. What is it that people like you don't understand about the Switch an it's market???
Keeps cost down.
@@philsurtees It's fairly obvious that existing Switch owners wouldn't want their hardware to become obsolote, but:
a. This is already becoming the case as is demonstrated by the cloud-gaming efforts for 3rd party ports
b. potentially new customers would likely want something that is a bit more up-to-date in terms of specs. Nintendo Switch was already old when it released.
I’m so happy this finally released!!!! We can finally get a regular switch for a cheaper price and more availability
Just 50 dollars difference that’s it
Regular Switch is same price as before…
Unfortunately this is not Apple
@@ZeroSolarisDXL No it is cheaper
It's only 50 dollars different, and lemme tell ya, this new creation is worth the 50, 100%
Just ordered one! This is my first ever switch console im very excited for it come :)
I'm thinking of buying a switch OLED is it worth it. I've never had one before?
IGN scores:
Launch Switch: 7
2018 Switch: 8.3
Switch Lite: 8.3
Switch OLED: 8
next switch oled lite then switch joy stick edition with same hardware..this is next 5 year plan for nintendo
Should be even lower, a 720p display in 2021 is pathetic
I’d be fine with that.
@wryx17 it as more to do with outdated chip modern phones are 1080p and are 3 times as strong as the switch with a longer battery life
Keep in mind they don't do floating-point review scores anymore. They have a 10 point scale without any decimals in between, so who knows what they would have given this if they were allowed to do that. 8 is probably just the closest score they could give.
The switch OLED hands on does look really nice in handheld mode it’s a slight upgrade compared to the current it’s not major tho
The standard switch is actually a bit brighter than the oled model. It is the exponential improvement in contrast that creates the illusion of increased brightness.
Usually OLED screens are always dimmer than LCD
And the fact that pixels are transparent on an OLED. Glad to see another smart person in the room. Shakes hand in 200IQ
While thats true it has more nits and is brighter. Oled is 312 while original 290
@@cracxy7220 Nits are not constant though and is classified as peak brightness for this reason. Its peak brightness is higher than the original, but it will definitely drop to lower nits compared again to the original.

Guys if you’re new and want a switch but playing it in portable mode isn’t a concern just get the regular switch
Wrong, the OLED feature is the biggest draw for portable Switch gaming. Playing in docked mode you can choose between regular and OLED models without losing out on much (unless you want a LAN cable connection, you’d go for the latter.)
Guys don't listen to this stoner. You will definitely play it portable if you are busy and don't game much at all. You have double the storage (64gb), a better kickstand, better audio, bigger screen and an OLED screen. Just remember all of this. Not only the screen is better
No, if you don’t own a Switch and want one there is no reason not to get the OLED model, assuming availability
And if u don't have a switch then getting the latest one is a no brainer and would make no sense to get the regular one when it's been out for the past 4 yrs now
@Ashraf Mokhtar burn in rarely happens anymore and mostly happens with a bigger screen like TV's that are very bright and the switch doesn't get bright enough for burn in
You forgot to mention the alternated design on the cart lid as people are complaining on it being hard to remove for those without longer nails.
3:05 just an fyi - If you were playing docked on an oled tv, you would select vivid mode ON THE TV, not the switch. Thats the only way it would work anyway.
Malibu Stacey's new hat is amazing
We need a Switch Pro that can output 1080p@60fps
Docked mode is 1080p, and some games actually do reach 60 fps, like Bayonetta 1 and 2, Mario Odyssey, Kart, Smash Bros., Ninja Gaiden, etc.
Also, if the console was always outputting 1080p 60fps, the battery would last 30 minutes
Nintendo has never been the hardware spec leader, but that’s okay because 720p on that size display isn’t bad at all, I’m not sure you’d even notice 1080p and then the thing would be hot and slow, same goes for an update to the GPU / CPU.
wait a minute... the upgrade is just screen type (not resolution?), stand and new color? best choose buy oled tv than switch oled
I've switched my old switch to this console, and I'm loving it so far.
Nice review, but the vocal quality has some issues in the mid frequencies. It sounds like a noise filter was set too high or something similar.
Use the michropone
Just got this today, had a switch lite as well, this was a MASSIVE jump in performance!
Thinking about buying it.
Had a lite, but wanted to finish Tears of the Kingdom on my TV, so purchased. 4 months later, and I'm hooked. My favourite console by far.

Side note: the background beats are hard AF. Who made them
Am gonna get one of these by the end of the year
As far as I'm aware there is no hardware redesign on the joycons that would stop drift from happening. Is this incorrect?
There’s not much benefit for people who mostly want to play their Switch docked, since you won’t see the improved colour vibrancy that keeps being marketed.
Why didn’t Nintendo upgrade the internal specs? Maybe they wanted all their switches to play the whole library of switch games. That means game developers can make a game that can be played by everyone who has a switch thus a bigger market. Nintendo has to upgrade the specs eventually though.
But you know, that requires effort.
Switch 2
The improved sound quality on the oled really stands out.
Should have done a 1080p LCD with a slightly better battery. That would have got more people interested.
The battery will last longer than the previous since an oled screen doesn’t need a back panel, other videos say roughly an extra hour or longer over the OG switch revision.
"Ambivalent." Such a cool word.
Switch in 2021: New OLED screen
PSVITA in 2012: Has OLED screen
If you're playing on an OLED TV the vivid setting is in the TV itself... If the switch had it in it as well, that'd be confusing. Like how would that even work.
The vivid in the console is purely a screen setting, I'm sure.
The one time you can give a 7/10 and you guys gave it an 8 🙄
🤣
Nah. For me, it's 3/10
Reason: where processor + GPU upgrade?
It's Nintendo so always do +1

Will Nintendo Switch games have better quality also on the TV screen with Nintendo Switch OLED console or only on the Nintendo Switch OLED console's screen?
Only on the oled console.

Digital Foundry’s review on the OLED Switch has better details and facts
Is that surprising at all?
lol ok, thanks for reporting back solider
These two reviews are aimed at entirely different audiences. The finer details and technical terms in the DF review will simply fly over the heads of IGN's core viewership.
In a world of 8k 60fps Nintendo could not make there screen 1080p. So sad
8k 60fps? Where? lol No console is giving you those numbers for sure. Upscaled 4k at up to 120fps sure. Even with a 3090 you'll only come close to hitting 8k 60fps using DLSS.
Higher resolution = lower battery life
@@picxal1948 my point is it has become a possibility. 720p has been around since 2004. The switch is using 2004 technology on there most current console.
@@TechWithSean it has 4310Mah battery. Something you would see on a mobile phone. The switch is perfectly capable of running a battery with 6000+ Mah battery without overheating they were just trying to make it as budget friendly as possible because we they care about is getting more profits.
Also Nintendo doesn't give a fluff about visuals 😅 they make the best games period 🤷🏽♂️ that's all that matters.
Does it overheat It's like getting hot when it's charging or playing on it ?
So in short, if you already have a switch its not worth buying the oled model, if you dont already have a switch then go for it.
It’s also great for people that have a 2017 model.
Its definitely a big reason why im getting it😂

Wonder how it'll handle Homebrew and GameCube emulation.
This one actually makes me want a switch now haha
Only the old cpu make me not to buy it

Did they at least solve the over heating issue?
Us: we want better hardware so higher fps
Them: get a bigger screen that's the same 720p resolution
Also you don’t want 1080p on a screen this size. Little to no visible difference and significant battery drain. Should have improved the processors though. You’re right on that
@@stuarthayward5962 What's the resolution of your phone? For over 90% of people it's 1080p or higher and the display of the Switch has larger display than any phone out there due to its 7 inch display, which is amplified by the 16:9 aspect ratio. Nobody would get a phone that has as low of a pixel density as the Switch OLED since it would be very detrimental to consuming entertainment, but you still preach "You actually can't see the difference!". And no, holding the Switch with your hands stretched out, won't compensate for the low resolution as the pixel density is so low.
