A few weeks ago fellow painter asked me how I start a series of paintings. I thought it was a great question so I decided to make a video about that.
So how do you start and what do you look for? I think there are as many different answers as there are artists so what I talk about the video is just one way, my way. As you progress on your journey as a painter you'll discover your own path. I do hope this video is helpful and can give some insight into the creative process.
I am fascinated with abstract landscapes and skies and the relationship between the sky and the ground.Experimenting, how not to be too precious etc. Before the actual painting begins I spend a lot of time outside - IN the landscape itself. I want to observe, and immerse myself, to see the colors, feel the wind and the weather.
In this video I invite you to come along on one of these walks - and show you part of this process that I’ve never shared before.
Back in the studio I had all these landscape impressions with me. I start with some layers of warm yellow washes and then added some layers of quinacridone red and burnt Sienna - now I want to try and add some cool turquoise washes and see what happens.
For more information on online painting courses etc. see my website: www.danishpainter.com
I invest a lot of time and love in filming and editing the videos so I'm happy for your support.

I love your use of colour and mark making as well as your lose style. I've recently taken up painting again after many years and have been experimenting with painting more loosely. I'm loving it and find it's much more forgiving for my arthritic joints! Keep producing these fabulous paintings and videos.

Hi Marie! It's Jade... I've been out of things for a good while trying to heal from the surgery misshap that has paralyzed the right side of my diaphragm and crushed my right lung and I've had to relearn how to use my right are...its not back, and apparently the damage done was more severe then we'd hoped... so... now just trying to wrap my head around needing oxygen for the rest of my life, and not laying flat...so many things..all for a surgery that was meant to give me back better use of my arms. I'm obviously not getting the left side done, even though it just grows weaker, but, can't chance it... I'm already a massive burden physically and will need another surgery to hopefully help my oxygen not suddenly drop out and into the 70's.... and apparently the cost of breathing by use of oxygen is a good bit monthly along with so much more.... anyway.... as you can tell, this, on top of my already failing body...I swear this thing is trying to kill me!😬😂... has, is, a bit of a fast learning curve.
I have tried charcoal and have done 3 pieces now... not light and beautiful, but, right now the dark charcoal is perfect for what apparently needs to come out of me. They aren't good of course, I've never worked with charcoal to draw.... but, they are my feelings, spilled out, so they mean a lot to me :)
But I was so so happy so be catching up on your videos! And as you know the sky is my love as well. You have a gorgeous place there to see amazing sky!! I have a lot of forest in the way... but the other day after yet another doctors appt, we were on the freeway as the sun went down behind the hill and the warm yellow...almost orange was so deep and beautiful with those sprays of light up through son clouds... so even on a crowded freeway, my husband knew he needed to get me past a couple semi trucks in the way or I might burst :) he did of course... so hanging out the window, arms braced to help hold them up to use every of my bit my strength to hold onto my phone to take as many pictures as I could. One of them.... its not perfect I'm sure, by the photography standards for print I used to do... but even though you could see some packed trucks down low and some city...the way the colors of that setting sun came through them was truly awesome! Gorgeous clouds, you know, not too much, but a good bit to show off their colors too. You could even see the bright dot of the moon... no matter what is going on, to witness such beauty in this difficult world, I was exhausted from being so excited and blown away... well, also from the effort it now takes to do that little bit now :/ but, totally worth it.
I love seeing your skies, in videos and on paper(gosh I fell especially in love with the second one down on the right and the 3rd down on the left... amazing!) and on canvas! They always, you always, make me smile and make me feel super inspired and soon I will be trying to get back into my regular, non-scary, art :) and you help a ton with that!
I apologize for this crazy long message!🙄😳🤦‍♀️ I intended to drop a quick note and was going to send you an email.... but my brain just kept spilling out here and has used up all my energy, so I will email you soon!
As we say... one day, over coffee or tea, we will watch those beautiful skies and talk all we want :)
Until then my friend, I hope you are well :) and I look forward to watching the next few videos I've missed :)
Sorry again for the long message... and in the morning after I hopefully get some sleep, I might take it down to not bother anyone. But for now... I can't start over and had to say hi :)😬🤷🏼‍♀️🤦‍♀️🙄😏❤💕🥰

Thank you for the views of your beautiful countryside! I love the nuances of evening light and agree about September, a month to be savored. I love the way you are working with acrylics. I have just started to try something similar using glazes and mediums and transparent pigments. I used to despise transparent pigment until I tried watercolor and things got magical for me. A final note on the many layers of gesso. Very nice effect! I don't like the canvas texture in my own work. But I do love the brushed texture you have achieved. I think you have inspired me to be more bold with more layers! Thank you!

    • @TheDanishPainter
      @TheDanishPainter  Před rokem

Yes they are very different. You could use unprimed canvas or tribble up on the layers of gesso. I use many thick layers of gesso and it helps.
