- My first ever Penang trip! Starting strong by slamming a bunch of Char Kway Teow over at the Legendary Ah Leng Char Kway Teow! Highly recommend this place - the noodles were smokey, a little creamy (probably from the duck eggs) and very balance with the right amount of spiciness. What really surprised me were the shrimps, they were super big and meaty.
For those that are visiting this place, do note that the wait is at least 20 to 30 minutes if you were to come during lunch hours.

Honestly as a Singaporean and a chef, once you tasted both Penang and Singapore ckt, it’s not even comparable. Malaysia or Penang ckt is way way better. We can argue it’s 2 different style, but fundamentally how do you get good wokhey when you’re frying 20-30 plates per cook vs the penang or malaysia one where they cook plate by plate?

looking at the iconic bright red coloured char koay teow.. the made the sambal perfectly.. most north malaysian food must have sambal tumis.. malay, chinese, indian & siamese all the same.. some chefs will never reveal their secret recipe of the sambal tumis..

I have a CKT trip in Penang before by only eating all the CKT in Penang, and this Ah Loong CKT is actually my second favorite in Penang, my favorite is the Siam Road CKT, so damn good

Today I had my third CKT in one hour, at No:82 Siam Road. Uncle is 81 years old and started frying CKT in his twenties. With over 50 years of experience, his stall was ranked #14th in 2017 World Street Food congress. From opening hours at 12 pm, we were waiting in line for one hour and got to enjoy our CKT at 1 pm. Some male customers order two plates for themselves alone. M$8 a plate.
Siam road CKT is the best in Penang, but the queue is crazy

@@ZermattNeo if you're looking for char koay teow that normally only locals go that is super delicious, can try Batu Lancang Market one. Lorong Selamat i personally feel is abit overrated and touristy. Hence being overpriced as well
I remember when i was lived in Singapore, and I'm a big fans of char kway teow.. so one day I went to the hawkers (@ ABC market) and ordered chat kway teow , what surprised me that day was the char kway teow color was black and tasted sweet , so next day I came back with my cousin and ordered char kway teow again but this time we instructed the seller to cooked they way we wanted. So my cousin start with 'uncle don't add black soy sauce, don't add cockles blood just add more chilies and we are good'.. the uncle replied with '能吃吗?'..and we both said 'yesss', because that's the standard char kway teow we know just like the color of the char kway teow in this video. the best! Anyway I'm from Indonesia (Riau).

@@tri4432 No, Kway teow Medan is another different variation, they usually add lap Cheong and the color is slightly pale and black and taste a bit sweeter than the char kway teow you look in this video.

Penang’s CKT is the best after eating CKT for more than 45 years. Those fried over Charcoal is even better. Another favourite fried noodles is their Hokkien Cha. I still miss what I ate when I was a kid when everything was still authentic and cooked by traditional chefs who had honed and toned their skills for decades. Too bad, they have long passed away. The new breed of young chefs nowadays somehow do not inherit their skills😅

I tried Ah Leng before I feel so so only leh, I still think Siam Road one always legendary the best, but the queue is nightmare-ish la. So sometimes I will opt for Lorong Selamat the grumpy auntie char koay teow, that one also nice one, its just that its on the pricier side
To me Siam Road CKT is the best. Last time I waited 45minutes for it and it's worth it.
This Ah Leng is famous for it's Ckt that serve with mantis prawn for additional charges.
As for Lrg Selamat one, I won't even consider bcos not worth it. It's touristy Ckt
@@show68channel57 Last time before Siam Road uncle moved in to their own shop (when they are still cooking by the road in a cart), that time only wait 30 minutes can eat already. Right now in the shop, the highest record I waited is 2 hours, really crazy. For Lorong Selamat, i understand a lot of people say its bad and its touristy, but for me I still feel its top notch and way better than most CKTs you can find in Kuala Lumpur, eventhough its expensive, but I feel its worth the money as the prawn the old auntie give is really really huge pieces
