Federer makes subtle changes in his grip whenever he needs to switch between forehands and backhands. Lately, because he is slowing down, he hasnt been getting enough time to change grip when going for his forehands. Thats why he has been hitting out often with his forehands.

Perhaps the reason why his backhand seems more resilient than many other one handers is both its versatility and adaptability. Aside from the variety of shots he hits with it, look at how many of these were abbreviated backhands. So many other one handers seem to just try to power through, and don’t put enough emphasis on placement. It’s probably why I prefer Federer’s one hander over all the other one handers. In terms of competitive versatility, his, in my opinion, is currently the best.

Fed is one player who has used almost the entire opponents court in his shot making. Most other players rarely go for the lines and angles, even someone like Djokovic doesnt do it very often. There's a misconception that Federer backhand was bad. Not on low bouncing courts. Federer main issue in his career was the high bouncing backhand he faced when playing Nadal high topspin forehand. When Federer fixes that (off clay), it's hard for anyone to beat him. 2017 Federer was short lived with that backhand on the rise for only three tournaments at AO, IW, Miami, and Shanghai. He has shown flashes of that backhand in his peak but couldn't maintain it his whole career. That's why he struggled on clay and high bouncing courts on hard courts because of this.

What is absolutely key to Fed's success on his backhand (as well as his forehand) is the way he can hit balls on the rise, right off (or in front of) the baseline. It takes time away from his opponents and does not allow them to "cheat" to one side or the other. That is why many of his opponents state that Fed is the most difficult to play against. They often say that he "constantly pressures you, all the time." No one else in the world can consistently hit balls (and winners!) on the rise like Fed can. No one. His timing and strength are simply incredible.

When Fed retires the ATP and ITF needs to release full Fed matches between 2000 and 2007. Look at the quality from the match vs Gimelstob in Miami 2000. There are many matches from 3-8 years later that aren't available in such quality.
