The ridiculous thing is that Rafa was absolutely amazing in this match as well. He did everything right. Used the same tricks he used to beat Federer so many times in the past. But that backhand had some serious venom that night.

H2H Rafa usually always had the upper hand against Fed except on the very fastest surface (grass), because he could better exploit the forehand to backhand exchanges; Fed could seldom generate enough pace and/or unpredictability to worry Nadal on the backhand side, while Nadal's backhand could be deceivingly flat and effective. This was a night Nadal would normally have won; the difference was Fed's improved, versatile, powerful, Wawrinka-like backhand. If Fed had made this backhand adjustment early in his career, there wouldn't be a big-3, just a big-1.
@@Nkosinati HOnestly though, the surface in AO 2017 was a bit faster than the last few years and whenever you give Fed a fast surface, he is tough to beat. Yes he was also playing exceptionally well in that period but the court was fast which really helps his game. On fast courts, a Prime Federer will almost always beat Nadal and Djoker.

Ive never seen a player play better than Nadal did at Roland Garros 2017. That was out of this world! But this is definitely the best Iâve seen Roger play. He was too good for Rafa that night.

Came back to this video just minutes after I heard Roger's decision to retire.I don't know whether I was expecting to see anything new,since i have seen this video (and many others about him) dozens of times, but I 've just finished rewatching it with tears in my eyes.Tears of saddness in the realisation that I am never going to see my favourite tennis player gracing the court ever again. But also tears of joy for all the memories that have been accompanying my whole life. I want to thank Roger for all the nummerless times that he has left me stunned,while watching him thrush his opposition,for making want to pick up tennis,copying his moves and dreaming that I was just like him when I won my first tournament all those years ago.I want to thank him for cheering me up everytime he played,no matter what I was feeling at the time.But most importantly I want to thank him for making me believe that art can be created out of nothing and that evereyone can take part in the moments of art and magic that he created.For all of that,Roger,thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Rafa played great...thought he would pull it off. Down a break in the fifth? Feds never EVER done that vs Rafa. The MAIN difference is Fed HAS lost on a GOOD BACKHAND DAY.....but Never to Rafa,,,,,it was AAAAALWAYS the reason Fed lost to Rafa. Two HOURS of even the SIMPLEST ROUTINE BACKHANDS.......all having to be hit from OVER ones shoulder......would DEFEAT anyone..........it's a simple club tactic....but it's the ONLY reason Rafa ever beat Fed. nobody reacts so much joyfully in winning a slam like roger does, he is so emotional in that, he had the most GS back then even then he celebrated like it's his first one.
My favourite ever match. Brings a tear to my eye. As a long suffering fan of Federer, having seen him suffer at the hands of Nadal for years, this was redemption. Iâve never seen him play with such guts. Not many guys have won a slam at 35, let alone against one of the greatest ever players. Pretty special Iâd say. Itâs gonna take a few more years to recover from Wimbledon 2019. Heâs injured again now in 2021. Hope to see him play again though.

I still remember watching this live, was incredibly impressed by Roger's performance that night. He had 4 years GS title drought prior, not only did he comeback, he came back strong with an improved backhand which was his weakness against Rafa. For someone his age at that time and was way past his prime, to still be able to improve and win GS is an incredible feat.
No one plays tennis like this, this is insane. Roger will be my idol as long as I live.

Watching these two is the greatest sight in tennis. Both Roger and Rafa are great in their own sense.
But Roger for me is the greatest shot maker of all time. It is insane what a fully charged federer can produce on court.
Rafa battles for every point and he is the greatest fighter this sport has ever seen.

It's interesting how Federer stops himself from coming to net at 6:09 and again at 6:11. It's like he instinctually knew over years of experience that there was a good chance Nadal would come up with the pass and resisted.
Federer had very poor tactics against Nadal in the earlier years, it wasn't just a matter of Rafa's forehand killing the one handed back hand. For example Nadal would serve 80% of the time to Roger's backhand and Roger still did not commit enough space to it. Every time he approached the net he got smoked. Roger has bageled Rafa on clay before so it's not like Rafa is unbeatable without the right strategy
â@@JL-fh4qwit's not about strategy, it's about the matchup, it didn't favor Federer in those slow courts and his playing style is to attack and finish the point as quickly as possible, Nadal was a beast defender and he moved very well and his topspin didn't allow Federer to play his game especially with that smaller racquet that he had. the only mistake Federer did I think is that he should've changed his racquet way earlier and maybe take some breaks to come back fresh.

The most impressive part to me is how varied he can make his backhand. Some high loopers, flat shots, top spin, everything. It's scary when it's on.
Novak was able to bring out even more variety from Fed's backhand -> the low backhand into the net, the one into the tramlines, the backhand shank - lovely stuff to watch over the years.

Funny to see Alcaraz making a joke about him not wanting to do a Fed 40-15 meme to the King of Spain lol that never gets old and has crossed the generations. There won't be any excuses about the 16 year age gap between Djokovic and Alcaraz, just two gladiators duking it out. Djokovic is still out there at the top of tennis, Fed is long retired finishing up going down more than 2 to 1 in finals 13 to 6 to Djokovic, almost 2 to 1, 11 to 6 in slams. At the end of the day, Fed's shanky beakdown backhand was only more loved by Djokovic in Federer than Fed's mental weak mode in the big moments. Some players have a bit of an off day the odd time- for Fed it was more often than not against Djokovic in the big matches!

Iâve always thought Federerâs tennis suffered because of some bad defeats to Nadal and I didnât truly believe it was because Nadal was necessarily a better player. The rivalry evolved in Nadalâs favour and I think this negatively impacting Rogerâs psyche and confidence and he didnât have a good enough coach to help him overcome the mental obstacle and find the solution. This wonderful victory not only exorcised those ghosts of painful losses but set up an incredible winning streak against Nadal where Nadal was crushed 6 times consecutively.
