  • Much of Federer's success at this year's Australian Open 2017 came from his much-improved backhand. This is a compilation of his best backhands and backhand volleys from the entire tournament. Enjoy.
    Video credits go to the other tennis highlight makers who uploaded the original match highlights. Kudos to them.

      I know 2017 was a bad year for Djoker and lost in AO early on but I have this feeling that if he met Federer in AO that year, Fed would have beaten him as well. He was playing amazingly well in 2017 with that backhand and forehand working like a charm.

      I believe Federer always had this backhand in him. You can see some of the 2006 performances when his backhand was on fire he would regularly be able to pull off shots like this. However over the years his footwork declined, and with the small racquet head he was using his backhand just slowly went away. However now that he changed his racquet, the bigger face is able to compensate better for his declined footwork, Hence his backhand is now back. Of course along with heaps of practice too with new coaches :)

      People speculate that Federer is not as good as he used to be because of his age, but the truth is that he has greatly improved from his former self, (especially the backhand and service selection) that's why he is still a top worldclass tennis player at the age of 35.

      @hyusama7469 Před 7 lety +9

      Sanju Wayne he always takes the ball early. He's like the only guy on tour that actually stands on or around the baseline. Taking the ball early is extremely difficult if you ever tried doing it yourself. Ljubucic ideally would've done much more than just said so.

    • @sanjogh777
      @sanjogh777 Před 7 lety +22

      Taking the ball early and being aggressive are two different things. Earlier he used to be aggressive with Novak and Rafa but he was a bit late on striking the ball giving his opponents half a second more to react which is a lot in tennis. This time he took those reacting seconds away from Rafa, which defied Rafa to play his best. Even Rafa agreed to it. Did you see him hit backhands and returns like these before? No. He came forward and anticipated well this time. Earlier he would slice the balls more.

      Not sure if he did but I have been following Fed for a while and he seems "rejuvenated".
      He is taking the ball a bit earlier. I love his cross court BH pummeling the ball. Something he hasn't been doing regularly.
      Maybe he saw how Stan is bullying opponents by going wide with his BH. Stan also takes the ball early from time to time.

    • @zhangyuandyou
      @zhangyuandyou Před 7 lety +13

      If Federer can keep playing like this, I don't think Djoko will have a chance, barring clay courts. Federer's 2017 AO has taken aggressive tennis to another level. Defensing won't work as it is just a matter of time that Federer will hit a winner whether with his forehand or backhand. Kind of like Wawrinka's style, but with better volley, trick shots, etc. Djoko is even more conservative than Nadal, but more aggressive than Murray.

    • @GyariSan1
      @GyariSan1 Před 7 lety +2

      Great post Yu. I also like the direction of where Federer's game is heading. He is eyeing every opportunity to stay aggressive to shorten points using his all court skills. For the past few years with his declining footwork his transition from defense to offense have badly faltered, hence players especially the big hitters have been able to bully him around. But with this new found tennis it will cover that weakness to a good extent, but of course the downfall is that it's high risk tennis and requires very high concentration to pull off regularly.

    • @dkangan
      @dkangan Před 7 lety +3

      What impressed me was F's pretty much perfect blend of patience and aggressiveness. In numerous cases he got back to neutral and went back to playing down the middle, or Nadal covered an attack and he just went back to playing down the middle, only to seize the next opportunity, sometimes even on the next ball, to put it away.

      I think single handed backhand is going to be the future in 10-15 years. Single handed has more power and manoeuvre than the double handed. The only problem is control. As the game evolves, players will be able to maintain more control with the single handed, even when the bounce is high. Also, most of the upcoming youngsters are above 6 feet, and it's not going to change.
      I am not certain about this, but more of a prophesy. :)

    Love how Nadal is having a hernia, grunting and trying hard as hell while on the other side of the court, Roger is silently but effectively hitting the ball way harder than Rafa and also placing the ball close to the lines. Just incredible display of technique and perfect timing allowing Federer to impart an insane pace on his ground strokes.
    I appreciate the amount of points shown on this video, no fillers, pure tennis porn. Great video!

    Federer backhand is awesome, Federer playing draft in australian open is so hard 3rd round played against bardyich, 4th round played against nishokeri, semi final played against wawerinka and final against Nadal all player are top ten player in atp ranking and Federer comback after 6 months but all these top ten players are totally disaster in front of Federer. woww. Federer is just so good and he prove that the G. O. A. T. I m so glad about Federer and I wish Federer will win record 8th Wimbledon title this year.

    I've said it for almost 3 or 4 years: the technique he was using on his backhand was getting less penetration on the court. Federer's backswing was much more linear when he was winning the majority of his slams. When he shortened his swing on his forehand, he changed the backswing on his backhand and it was less effective. But now it's back and it's proving pretty lethal. This is after he adjusted the backswing on his forehand to close his racquet face sooner just like in his peak.

    Federer backhand is up there with the best now, was a weakness before, his aggression from both wings coupled with his volley and incredible serve make him look scary good especially at his age. Well deserved two open championships so far in 2017.

      In the early years Roger played a slice block backhand. It was good back then because he would hit the damn baseline almost every time. This new backhand is interesting because of the topspin he generates when firing it cross court.

    • @evgenidimitrov7790
      @evgenidimitrov7790 Před 7 lety +2

      Federer is the greatest, Rafa is the best. There is a difference, Rafa's 100% will beat Fed's 100%, most of the days.2008 RG and Wimbledon finals, shows what is their level.

    • @Aggelostououranou
      @Aggelostououranou Před 7 lety +17

      "Rafa's 100% will beat Fed's 100%" Are you sure about that?? Can Rafa win when Federer makes these impossible shots 24/7? He is called the maestro for a reason

    • @evgenidimitrov7790
      @evgenidimitrov7790 Před 7 lety +1

      Nessie Jr My FB ... wall/background ot w/e it is called is Federer, this does not mean i am delusional about him.I love both.But they are 23-12 for a reason too.They both were at their best in 2008, on Rafa's clay he gave 4 games to Fed.On Fed's grass, Rafa won again. IF you are looking at incredible shots all day long, then Stan is the best player ever, because of his 10 Animalistic matches.

    • @Aggelostououranou
      @Aggelostououranou Před 7 lety +14

      Evgeni Dimitrov Hey I'm just saying dude. And well yeah they are 23-12 so what?? That doesn't really mean much when you look at the bigger picture. It's just a statistic concerning their head to head match history. Do not forget there are many other players as well. Federer just beat him and he is 35. And if Nadal is superior than Roger as you're implying then why doesn't Nadal have 20 GS? Who stopped him? Well probably other players who we probably not even know...

    • @evgenidimitrov7790
      @evgenidimitrov7790 Před 7 lety +2

    I personally found the most impressive thing about the final with Federer is how he could change the tempo of his game just like that.It was almost as if he was a different player. He was taking the ball insanely early backhand and forehand against Nadal. I know he always stay on the baseline to take the ball early maintain as the aggressor but man that finals match he was on another level. So damn sharp :O
