- Guitarist George Johnson celebrated his birthday on May 17. Bass player Louis Johnson transitioned 4 years ago yesterday (May 21, 2015) It's time to listen to two versions of one of their hits and decide who did it better.
"Tomorrow (A Better You, a Better Me)" is a song originally recorded by the Brothers Johnson as an instrumental in 1976 on the album Look Out for #1. It was issued as the b-side of their debut single, "Get The Funk Out Ma Face."
In 1989, Siedah Garrett wrote lyrics to the song, and it was recorded by Quincy Jones featuring Tevin Campbell on vocals for the album Back on the Block. The new version of the song spent one week at number one on the US R&B chart and peaked at number seventy-five on the US pop chart in June 1990. It was Campbell's first number-one R&B single and first single to enter the Billboard Hot 100. - wikipedia

I had no idea Brothers Johnson did it first! You learn something new everyday!
Yes, I remember the original done here. Also, this is how it was meant to be (an instrumental) but Quincy Jones, being the genius he is, added lyrics after deciding to have Tevin Campbell do the remake.
ZJtheLegend ... same here. Got that 70s spacey groove sound too. Smooth. ... Tevin under Quincy production though... idk.
I'm with you, I never knew Brothers Johnson were the first. I've always loved Tevin Campbell's version which I still listen to quite frequently. I even bought the cassette single when it first came out. I really like the Brothers Johnsons version also! 😊👍🏾
I like both, however; I ❣️ Tevin Campbell's voice so I vote TC.
I grew up on The brothers Johnson version, Tevin did a very nice job, I just prefer this song as an instrumental
Shout out to Tevin Campbell! He's terribly underrated!
Yes ma'am 😍
Factz
He wasn’t never underrated, he got out the game too early Sister.
@@adriancampbell1921 bs tevin doesn't get his due like the rest
Homophobia and bad decision by Tevin dead his career. A true talent though...
As an 80s baby, Tevin’s was and still is a favorite; however, when I heard Brothers Johnson, several years ago, I was back in the same feelings again so I’d say they both are beautiful. Tevin’s rendition is an extension of the former.
Bros Johnson's version stir something deep inside and gives you this warm fuzzy feeling that's not directly tangible, yet still present. Then the boy in Tevin comes along with the closest vocalizations of a young Michael Jackson and interprets those feelings as emotions that leave you happy, sad, forlorn, and nostalgic for times, people, places and loves you can never grasp again.
Bros Johnson provides a pallet of beautiful colors, but Tevin takes that pallet and paints a picture that turns out to be a master piece.
Ah ... Tevin!!!
Absolutely true
You nailed it! Explained it very eloquently!
Beautifully said✊
insightful comment once you realize Quincy first offered this song to Michael Jackson.
@@thequietrevolution7390 Really? I never knew that... Interesting!
It seems tailor made for MJ...
Love this song, & Love both versions, but "TEVIN CAMPBELL" is why I fell in love with it first! Much respect to the "Brothers Johnson" - Always consummate musicians!
Tevin. The lyrics give me warm feelings ever time
IKR......
Kelinia Johnson.. I love Tevin's version it's better hands down , both talented in their own right , but Tevin takes this one .
Siedah Garrett penned the lyrics. She's very unsung...
💋
The Johnson Brothers is one of my favorite groups, however Tevin Campbell version is bringing that nostalgic vibe. His version almost brings tears to my eyes. ❤
😢😥😪
I like them both honestly..
I wish TVOne would do an Unsung for "The Brothers Johnson" tho'..
OBrother Johnson saw them in person very good person
🎤🎸🎤🎸yeeesssss! BROTHERS JOHNSON!!!BUT this is TEVIN'$ joint tho.🎤💞💖🎇🔥😎u betta ask sumbuddy!🎤

@@walterevans74 Cuz Brothers Gonna Work It Out✌🏾✊🏾
The brothers Johnson has been always been a favorite of mine. I remember seeing them in the day. Oh, watching Thunder Thumbs on his knees making that bass talk...Yah! 😎
I could listen to them back to back and groove to both renditions no I'm a music lover soooo ill say both are good works👍
I agree with just about everything that was said. Enjoyed both however I like Tevins version better
TRUE THAT👍
I love them both
Both...but tevin's youthful vocal and the children's choir takes the message of tomorrow to new heights! Tevin was a special gifted child...where so Usher was good but needed a little more grooming.
Huge brothers Johnson fan, however tevin Campbell was getting his MJ on and made it feel complete imo
Tevin Campbell's version was my graduation farewell song😭❤💯
Tevin is one of the baddest
Tenors in the game.
The Brothers Johnson are underrated musicians.
But much respect to the Brothers Johnson for the music ❤
Both Deserve an unsung documentary.

Mine too...
Robert Dozier ❤💯💯
6/13/19
It does make a graduation song!!!
*great
Mine too my graduation song 1990
Both are amazing. Quincy Jones produced both of them. Some intergenerational flexing right there!
I like both. The Brothers Johnson mellow, relaxing sound and Tevins’s youthful, optimistic, hopeful version.
Damn, I never even knew this Bj version existed... I can't choose between the two because as a kid that Tevin Campbell version was one of my favorite songs ever, it used to make me cry for some reason.
Shout out to the amazing Siedah Garrett who wrote the words in Tevin version ❤
I own this album by Brother's Johnson. A lot of artists wrote songs back in the day that artist re-made. Some good some not so good. Nothing like "The Originals" My vote: Brother's Johnson"
Mine also 👌🏽💯
I can’t choose! I love them both! Thanks for sharing!
Same here they're both good !!!
@@lifejourney3813 I know right! : D
MR. Q !, WAS - OFF- THE CHAIN!
Really love this song but its always great for another generation to carry on the legacy but Brothers Johnson did it best hats off to them
I love the instrumental version.
Brothers Johnson ...without this there would be no Rain Campbell version
I’m so glad this came across my feed. Both different and SO beautiful. ❤️🖤💚
There's an old saying, there's nothing new under the sun! Q is the goat! He produced both tracks!
DjSegwon 💯

I agree! Oprah Winfrey said once, there is nothing Quincy Jones can do wrong! As both these tracks prove her right I will just turn up the sound, sit back and groove!💖💖💖
I haven’t heard either of these songs in ages. I love both.
BOTH.
E Q U A L L Y!!!💖💖💖
YES!!!
I had the Brothers Johnson version. It was on the B side of Get the funk out my face. They're both dope!! Tevin sounds like a young Michael Jackson.
He was far better at emulating a young MJ than Janelle.
Tevin totally did it better. His voice with Siedah's lyrics gave it a warm and hopeful push, but this is a gorgeous composition!
Since both renditions were produced by Quincy Jones, I'll say this, The Brothers Johnson was the intro to Tevin's. One instrumental and one with vocals, just a very nice blend.
This is gonna sound strange, but the original Brothers Johnson version perfectly captures the feeling of growing up in the 70s. So smooth, so calm, yet deep. That was the feeling growing up then that sadly people born after 1980 have no idea how wonderful it was back then. Wasn't perfect times, but people were so nice back then compared to now.
From different stages of life... Bros. Johnson when I'm 17 and Tevin when I'm 28. One from when you're just starting out, one from when you've been out the house for awhile. Brings back memories...
Tevin: Tomorrow
Brothers Johnson: Strawberry Letter
It’s a beautiful combination. The original and the beautiful lyrics together CLASSIC!!
It certainly proves that a hit is always a hit. Siedah's words are very fine, which makes this one of the best songs ever written. Young Campbell brings an ineffable quality to the work but through it all Quincy's masterful craftsmanship can be felt. He has had the touch for decades.
I watched the show taxi with Danny Davito so much that I know this is part of the theme music and I love it, the brother Johnsons are excellent musicians 🥰❤️🖤💚and Mr Tevin Campbell is an excellent singer and Quincy Jones is an excellent producer and musician as well 🥰❤️🖤💚#black excellence ❤️🖤💚
Both stand out in their own right.
Oh gosh, this is hard!! I adore Brothers Johnson and Tevin's version was gorgeous as well... But there's something so beautiful with just instruments...
Brothers Johnson because of the musicianship!
I love the guitar and bass on Brothers Johnson's version. Never knew that they did the original version. I love bothe Tevin and Brothers Johnson's versions.
Can't compare the two, because one is just a musical rendition, and the other is a complete song with lyrics. And they're both Amazing by the way.
The instrumental is taking me somewhere
This is my childhood theme song
Brothers Johnson instrumental was perfect and relaxing! Tevin had a beautiful voice which was perfectly pitched for the instumental.....which makes the Brothers Johnson version the winner here! That instrumental made this song!!
I don't know what happened that would make Tevin take a detour but God knows his vocals are sorely missed. Nonetheless, Tevin has my vote hands down.
I love both versions of the song. Both have the jazz feel.
Tevins voice changed and could no longer provide the vocal range of the original tunes that made him famous. Toward the end of his career he appeared on the Apollo theater and his voice was clearly much deeper and could no longer even do the songs that made him famous. I felt sorry for him as he struggled to hit the range of his yesteryear
Tevin to me. We sang this song when I graduated elementary school. But the instruments playing are nice too.
Yooooo, we sang this too...8th grade graduation. ✊🏽
Tevin won this one... The lyrics give the song life. But both are works of art though.
Both are good cuts. The Bros Johnson has that cool smooth jazz touch that stands out and never leaves you.
Love BOTH but with Quincy Jones by Tevin side and voice it gave it a whole lift with lyric .
Quincy actually produced both versions.
Quincy Johnson produced both.
This show teaches me about singers I've never heard of before and sometimes songs I never knew certain artistes did. That's great.
They're both decent. Tevin's version just has lyrics. The lynchpin is Quincy Jones
Exactly...Q is the thread
Agree
Agree 100% on Q.
He produced both
Siedah Garrett's lyrics over the Brothers Johnson melody, with Tevin Campbell vocals, made me believe that tomorrow would be a better day!!
I love both versions the music and lyrics, to me they both go hand and hand together! The Brother Johnson was fired!
Both versions are great. Im a jazz lover so the Brothers Johnson resonate with me.
Another one when Both are equally good for the ears and the soul. shoutout to Siedah Garrett for putting the lyrics to this beautiful melody.
The instrumentation of 70s music puts it above most other decades for me. It's so peaceful.
But Tevin's version came out in my teen years. I love Tevin's strong-for-a-li'l-boy singing.😂😂😂😂, but I never cared for the background children's chorus.
My Brother brought home the Brothers
Johnson's first album and played
It!. I had never heard anything
Like it before!. Look Out For #1 is the debut album by the Los Angeles, California-based duo Brothers Johnson released in 1976. The album reached number one on the R&B albums chart and number three on the jazz albums chart in the United States.
Brother Johnson gave that vibes on the different instruments that they beautifully played! Mr. Tevin Cambell gave a message more to the youth with the background vocalist. Brother Johnson did it better, ( R.I.P. Louis )!
Like them both i...The lyrics to tevins brighten your day..very inspirational...
We need to get back to this music as soon as possible, this negative Hip hop bullshit is destroying us. Thanks again. Peace!
OMG The Brothers Johnsons' Are Giving Me Chills.
Wow, I never knew this was an instrumental. Thanks for the video.
These are my long distance driving choices still today, 2023, along with many other tall talents.
TEVIN VOICE IS SO SWEET AND INNOCENT!!! KIDS IN THE BACKGROUND MAKES IT EXTRA SPECIAL!!! BROTHRES JOHNSON IS ALSO!!! SOOTHING AND RELAXING!!! GREAT!!!! BOTH!!!!!!@@@@
NEVER knew The Brothers Johnson did this song 1st. ! WOW!
This is one that the remake is heart felt, with QJ touch and the children's choir hands down Tevin love and miss you....
Damn, I use to play this all of the time on the stereo at home 🏡
Reelblack you are tearing me apart !! Original is chill and put your feet up with a glass of wine music. Tevin's version is so sweet. Its Brother's Johnson for me.
Both are super talented. Don't you all miss the days of bands and real singers, not the talents of people you can't tell one from the other and I am talking about all genres.
Damn! This is a hard one. I always thought this was Tevins song. Lovin this instrumental though👏🏽👌🏽😊👂🏽🎶
I had never heard the Brothers Johnson version. I like it. It's great. But I can actually sing along from memory because of Tevin. And I get a little choked up thinking about how many graduating classes used this song. Class after graduating class of young Black Americans believing, if only for a moment, in themselves and in the power of believing at a great moment of achievement in their young lives. so Tevin gets my vote.
😱🤭🤭 Though as I listen, I immediately remember this BEAUTIFUL instrumental version by The Brothers Johnson but
Get Otta Here!!!!🤷 I would have never recalled their version and connected the dots!!!! 🤷 Never!! 🤷
1.2.2023
They're both great. Thanks for the upload
Brothers Johnson had the beautiful music and Tevin Campbell put his amazing vocals on it. Never knew Brothers Johnson had made an instrumental of this first. I'd have to give it to Tevin for making us more aware of this cut!
I'm glad I found thus channel keep doing this!
I always loved this song
Brothers Johnson's version is for grown folks and Tevin's version is for children. You do the math.
I agree
I agree. 🎶
I did not know tevin Campbell and the brothers Johnson did the same songs
I agree...Bj's is that head nod, slow bop.
Tevin is inspirational and nice
Mayme Clayton you get a shout-out! Thunder Thumbs and Lightnin' Licks is purely for grown folks.
Now I'm going to dig out that album and put some joy in my heart!
They are beautiful. I grew on the Tevin Campbell version.
I like them both ❤❤
I'm old school, so of course the Brothers Johnson did it better. Tevin is good though.
Grown folks = Brothers Johnson. Young grown folks = Tevin. OLD AS hell grown folks like me roll with the Brothers Johnson all day, no contest. Both tracks are fantastic.
Tevin got this he sounds like a young Michael
Ikr!
Got to give one of my favorite groups, The Brothers Johnson the nod on this one. The original version and best. Quincy took several of the tunes he produced with them and remade them with other artists. This one is unique and that he gave an instrumental lyrics.
I did not know that.
Its almost like two different songs. The lyrics with the children give it a different feel. I like the instrumental as an instrumental and the lyric one as a song with lyrics. Campbell's has stronger, more pronounced instrumental foundation. The Bros Johnson's is quieter & more mellow, understated. Campbell's always make me choke up a bit bc of that particular time period. Rough year. But Tevin could never do Stomp & Strawberry Letter. 😄
Look out for #1 album. Still at my mothers house. My sister bought the album in 1976. Played it when Quincy Jones and Tevin Campbell released their version in the summer of 1989. I like both. But I will always love instrumental songs. That’s what we are missing!!! Just listen to the cords and listen what the musician is conveying. RIP George Johnson.
Reelblack, do one Betcha Golly Wow between Stylistics and Norman Conners with Phyllis Hyman. Something about the music of 1976 that was special.
Love you Tevin but nothing beats Brother Johnson.
Progressive soul BRO J
Agreed!!
I had no idea the Brothers Johnson had this version. I have to say Brothers Johnson has my vote, love the instrumental sound, peaceful, smooth , jazzy. Tevin i’s version is ok, I just love old school music , more soulful , with no spoken words ,just the sound of music flowing
the Brothers Johnson did it best and rest in peace to Mr. Louis Johnson in the name of the album for you ones that don't know that they did it first was called look out for number one .
whoa, i had no idea that was a cover. I loved this song as a kid and used to sneak and play the brothers johnsons album on my dads record player. Plus George and I have the same b-day.
I enjoyed from the Brothers Johnson. When Kevin sang the
words ,it was even better. By the way everyone was on the floor, when heared "stomp" All the Parents got to together to make a teenager night. They played every thing. Today's music ,Salsa , then they went old school. I was surprised to seen the teens, on the floor. They cheered, when they played "Stomp" My Wife and I, and all the Parents, danced all night.
I grew up with the Tevin Cambell version and to me it's the best. The song is nothing without the words.
Being born in '75, The Brothers Johnson version was unknown to me, & I consider myself a Jazz Head. Tevin's version came out when I was 16, so I have to give it to Tevin, but Brothers Johnson's is more melodic. For me the lyrics push it over the top, very inspiring.
Both!!!!!! We boomers enjoyed the original "Brother Johnson's" version. This sweet, silky, instrumental, voiceless, version, the sound of our youth, love, family, solidarity in the community. This version offered us more creativity to just sit back and think/dream, appreciate the next chapter of our lives, the excitement of entering adulthood!!!!!! We moved on with our new, young families in the eighties, then came Fathers Quincy's new version with this fresh new sound of Sweet, Teven!!!!! Tevens version with lyrics, offerd a horizon of hope, self confidence, a new way of looking at life for our babies, the new generation of X's. Teven's lyrics allowed our young X's to recognize, they could be, do it all, successfully!!!!!!
Brothers Johnson i had this record well my pops did anyway. I owned the tevin album though both good both different vibe. But i have to go with the Brothers smoothness.
A very Collaborative Action.. Cause those beats set the tone.. And Tevin Voice Definitely bought this song to Life
Extra Strength Shout Out to The Brothers Johnson. Tevin Campbell Added Vocals. Tomorrow was my Favorite Song 🎧 1990. 15 years old.
I did not know brothers is the original artist wow thank you for sharing
Awesome much respect!!
I like both versions gives us understanding of what we need to do.as.an nation
Miss these days...
Love them both🌺
I had forgotten that the brothers did it first and I did not get theirs but I bought every tape and CD that Quincy made although he did produce the brothers. I operated a limousine service in the late 70s until the crash of 87. I think the brothers did theirs during the last few years of 54 as the disco era was ending. However, today so much of the new music is disco all over again. As the old song states" everything old is new again. And by the way, anyone getting into some exercise routine, the brother's song stomp is great for that. When I would travel to other Countries or in hotels and would have to work out in the hotel's gym, it was great for that repeated.
