- Curtis Mayfield was such a prolific artist that he would often would hand off a hit record before he released his version of it. From The Makings of You (Gladys Knight), Let's Do It Again and We Must Be In Love (Five Stairsteps)
its arguable whose version is best. There isn't a correct answer, but I want to know which you prefer: Baby Huey's original recording of HARD TIMES, released in 1971, or Mayfield's album track from 1975. Feel free to share your thoughts below. Shared for historical reference.

Im a 59's baby, Never knew who baby Huey was, I may have heard of him, but I don't remember him, love Curtis Mayfield's voice, he was my mamas groove, but baby Huey, he rocked that hard times. I was feeling it "hard times" more in my soul with baby Huey, he sound & look like he was really having hard times for real.
More important is the facts within the song still relevant today !
Baby Huey, version is hard. I'm feeling this.
INDEED " 👍
Love Curtis. But Huey had that raw emotion in his version.
EliteBlackSash Same here. But I feel Huey just nudges it. Only just.
Yess
My goodness, Huey's version has that raw emotion with those blaring horns and Curtis' version has a laid back funky swagger! They both sound good, even back to back and tell-the-absolute truth! This combo would make a great soundtrack for the lives of many.💙
This is my first time hearing of Baby Huey. I love Curtis Mayfield's smooth sound. I will search for Baby Huey's music because it sounds good too. It's a tie.
This is my first time hearing of Baby Huey too #1 without joking anytime you are a grown @#$ man calling your own self baby will lead to problems . I did enjoy his song though and I agree Curtis Mayfield is the man🥰❤️🖤💚#I love all of my people ❤️🖤💚🥰
@@evonza4858 Baby Huey was a beast. Had a glandular problem leading to his weight gain. Sampled by a ton of rappers. Love his psychedelic version of A Change is Gonna Come.
@@RoLPeace thanks for the info but even back then he could have gotten someone to taylor make his trench coat to fit him properly, blessings to him anyway and to you too and everyone 🥰❤️🖤💚 enjoy your Easter, Ramadan or Passover whatever you celebrate enjoy it and remember the spirit 🥰❤️🖤💚
@@RoLPeace ps baby Huey may have done a change is gonna come remake but my Sam Cook who wrote it , sounded excellent when he did it 🥰❤️🖤💚
Heard about Baby Huey back in the 70s....I need this music bad...
Man I can relate to this cut...I dig Hueys version more energy...
Mr.Curtis Mayfield wrote and produced this track but Baby Huey and The Baby Sitters made you LISTEN!!!
I'm partial to Baby Huey on this one. Curtis Mayfield's sound is very soulful with that street hustler after hours joint sound. Reminds you of the Vietnam war era when heroin was ravaging our community; prostitution; cops on the take. Baby Huey signed to Curtom Records (owned by Curtis Mayfield) and only came out with ONE album, but, his stuff was full of the rebelliousness of that same time period.
Baby Huey is the one I lean more toward because his drum breaks not only were sampled in hip hop tracks by some of the best producers, but, his drum breaks were an integral part of early hip hop when the youth from '72 to '76 were rocking with a new energy. They were forming hip hop music and culture when it wasn't called hip hop but were only playing and dancing to the heavy percussion breaks of many different genres. One important DJ to note was DJ KOOL HERC. Thank God for Mr. Curtis Mayfield and Baby Huey.
Huey's baritone comes through with more feeling. Curtis a little smoother. Miss both of them tho.
It's like different grades of weed it all smokes the same in the end.💜
Baby Huey! ✊🏾 A song like this and with the lyrics that it has it doesn’t need to be laid back and chill, I like the hardness and rawness that Baby produces in the song. He did his thang which is why he’s the winner for me.
I stumbled upon hearing Baby Huey's music around 9 years ago. I never heard of him or his music. When I heard him sing I was blown away! I discovered a diamond amongst the stars!! His voice is uniquely soullful and powerful!! A gifted man with a beautiful voice!!
I love them both. I remember when I use to play this in the club B&B uptown Manhattan in the HKI Karate School. I was called "D.J. Jive Five", kicking it live! Good records, thanks for the memory.
For me, Huey brings through the pain and reelality of the lyrics in a deeper way.
Curtis, cool & collected.
Huey, straight to the point.
The redo always has to bring something extra, bring another wrinkle in. Huey certainly couldn't do it the Curtis did...he had bring another dimension to the tune.
Curtis gets an A.
Huey gets an A+ for bringing that extra that made the tune better. Better meaning that Huey gave the tune a boost, a lift, that increased the value of the tune
Saw baby Huey and the baby sitters many times around Chicago . Good times .indeed.
"Eating spam and Oreos, drinking Thunderbird"
You a Helluva man I Salute you Brother
OKKKAY baby Huey 😅 sick and tired of having THESE BLUES🖐️ that's what he said to!!! 😆✊💖👑
Oh, yeah, and Curtis is a legend. A real black artist with heart and soul for our people. I miss him everyday. I love you Baby, but Curtis is hard to cut. Peace.
Iya Khan ❤️ 💜 🖤 🤎 💜 🖤❤️
AS MUCH LOVE I HAVE FOR CURTIS!!! HUEY DID HIS THING WITH TRUE GRIT AND GUTS!!! LOVE HUEY'S BETTER!!!!! 2019
Ah,two versions of the same song. Pain from a personal side, and pain from a teacher's prospective. Curtis wrote this and they both bring heart and life to the lyrics! Spam and ores, mane what! Nobody writing lyrics with that emotion today. Peace
Curtis...Hands down! Love the emotional feel, with his guitar and voice
Curtis version is straight up Funk though....the breaks in the music are working...
Aw man, somebody remembers Baby Huey. This is so great. Baby left us too soon! RIP, Thanks again ReelBlack.
My ears voted for Curtis Mayfield's version. I never heard of Baby Huey, so I thank Reelblack for introducing me to his sound.
"Theres no loooove to be found" Supreme clientele
Ghostface Killah!
Huey....Hands Down!

Videos thanks for sharing
Love you 👬💓💕🌻🌹🌎☝
The one and only
Ok so this the first time I ever heard both so give 7mins and 2seconds to give my vote😀
Baby Huey🙄..got THAT TEMPTATIONS VIBE TO IT😍😍
BABY HUEY!!👍🏿
Baby Huey won vocally but that mfkn bass talking on Mayfield's version!!
Never heard of Baby Huey but can relate to this song...
Huey sounded raw, like he was going through some things. This is relevant now.
First, never realized these were different versions of the same song or that it was written by Curtis. They’re so different
Second, both have been used as samples in hip-hop. Verdict...
BABY HUEY all day!!! Baby Hue was a force set to take music by storm but his journey was cut short. Curtis sure knew how to find superior talent. Jerry Butler, Donny Hathaway, Baby Huey, etc. The list goes on
Man, loved me some Babe Huey because I remembered watching a cartoon with the same name. Love for Babe Huey the best back in the day.
Real Music
Curtis did the soundtrack to my life , But Baby Huey directed the Movie.
Baby Huey definitely on this track 🎵🎹🎻
Curtis Mayfield hands down
Huey’s rawness is unforgettable.
I love both versions. Gotta go with Curtis Mayfield , for those whom aren’t familiar with Baby Huey, you must listen to “ A Change is Gonna Come “ & also “Listen to me “ on this album - great cuts from back in the day. Enjoy!!!
The FACT that this channel doesn’t have AT LEAST 1 million subs is a direct testament to how lost we are as a people.
But, like Hov said: “Less is more, nigga it’s plenty of Us.” ✊🏾
This is a tough call because I love both versions - Curtis' is old school laid back funky smooth, while Baby Huey's is hard, raw funky soulful! But Curtis will always be the master lyricist, & whose sounds I grew up loving, & listening to. Guess it all depends upon what kind of mood I'm in, as to which I'd play first.
Curtis Mayfield is the man🥰❤️🖤💚he produced, he sang and he was an activist 🥰this is my first time hearing of the other brother and I love him as well but just looking at his album cover I say he should have gotten a haircut because that non haircut of his convinced me that he was having hard times🥰❤️🖤💚
Both cuts serve different purposes. If I'm riding around it's gonna be Baby Huey; too much energy and much harder. Curtis' version is for the house, an adult beverage and thangs so I can get my head around whatever I have to do. Much more intimate.
Baby Huey hands down!!
Both versions are nice, but that smooth Sound from one of the greatest writers and singers, Curtis Mayfield did that.
Curtis makes u feel ur like in a movie or something
Hell yeh walking in the rain with a wet ciggy😧☹
Hell yeah especially when the movie starts off with a big grill caddy cruising through the streets of new York City
I love Curtis but heuy beat is sick damn
Curtis Mayfield did it the best, but I like both of the renditions. Really enjoyed the side by side comparison of the two...that was nice.
Thank you love this educating 360
Love them both dearly. But the Huey version just sets in my soul!
Curtis!!!
On this song, my opinion is baby huey
Baby Huey I give a 10, Curtis Mayfield I give a 9.9, and for you Wu-Tang heads (Supreme Clientele, Buck 50, Rza I give a 9.991 📊
Baby Huey. His version hits harder IMO.
Baby Huey was a beast. He was on Curtom records. He was a mis of funk, psychedelic rock and soul. Check out his version of a Change is Gonna Come.
Curtis Mayfield
Curtis
So Baby Huey's version is better because of the musical arrangement, in my opinion. However we must give Curtis (the legend) props for his version as well...and respect for being the architect of the song, itself.
Baby Huey. I agree its raw more of what I think Curtis meant it to be which is why he gave him the song in the first place.
Baby Huey.... Showing my Age.....was 1st Called Baby Huey and The Babysitters....I like Curtis Groove..
I'll have to say Baby Huey is the one!
Baby Huey all day, all night.
Baby Huey was a baaaad brother (never heard of him until last month on this channel)....and this comes from a Curtis Mayfield mega fan.....but Baby Huey has my vote.
Baby Huey got my vote on this one.
I used this sample few yrs back,...sick tune this
Baby Huey
I gotta go w Baby Huey. Love that heavy soul sound.
I am from chgo born raised in the West side.. GOTTA SAY CURTIS..
Curtis has that smooth pimpin Mack sound to it.
Baby Huey is da WINNER here for the song SUNG in the way HE SINGS IT, is MOST POWERFUL FOR CONVEYING , CONVINCINGLY THAT FOR MANY " LIVING"IS ANYTHING BUT "EASY."
Classics
@3:32 shout out American Pimp tho
Love Curtis. But I liked Both ver.
CURTIS!!!
No dis to Curtis but this was Baby Huey’s war cry!
Huey was 🔥🔥🔥
Curtis was smooth and cool😎😎😎
What I enjoyed the most of the two was the drums. It was so much going on with the rhythm.
CURTIS!!!!
I like Baby Huey's version, very fast paced and somewhat psychedelic- which makes sense in 1971.However, taking Mayfield out of the equation, I think the second track was stripped down and spaced in a way that one could groove to it and still catch the meaning. That was the Mayfield way. Mayfield wins.
Both are great. I love the stoney laidback groove of Curtis’ version
First of all I'm sorry missed when this first was posted but I'm here! I do love the fact that Curtis put his soul on this track!!! Curtis has the Impressions and the Super Fly sound track but I'm going with Baby Huey on this one.
Oh, shit!!! RZA sampled that Baby Huey track on that song "Buck 50" from GhostFace Killah's "Supreme Clientele" album
This some gangster shit right here YO!!!
Curtis he was smooth
Mr. Curtis!!!!!!!
Huey!
Definately the Curtis Mayfield. His version has more soul and vibe.
Baby Huey's version is much better. I guess those who vote for Curtis do it just because they love Mayfield, he's much more famous. But Huey sang it way better, there's a lot of such a dramatic and tragic pain. We can see Baby Huey can't stand it no more. Curtis version is also wonderful and soulful but where is that pain? It seems like he sings about something regular bad, but Baby's nearly crying that tune
I like both but Baby Huey's gets your attention more you should do one on make me twice man New York city version and the notations
Never heard Curtis version till now lol. I say tie!!!!
Awesome education don't stop
Baby Huey!
Curtis will make u feel every word everytime..smh.
What hpnd to the music?
IronMan Huey...and the Wu-Tang Clan Baby Sitters
I’m more partial to the Baby Huey and the Babysitters version.
Loving both but Curtis is my man even though I love both sounds
I liked them both to different vibes same song
I'm partial to Curtis!! Just saying
LUDIRTY That's what IJS
