    Allen Edmonds Park Avenue Review: Black Cap-Toe Dress Shoes • Allen Edmonds Park Ave...
    Allen Edmonds is one of the few remaining “great American shoemakers,” still making their premium leather dress shoes here in the United States. Allen Edmonds makes an excellent Goodyear welted leather dress shoe that, if properly polished and resoled, can last a lifetime.
    For many of our viewers, Allen Edmonds is their first experience with a high-quality, Goodyear welted leather dress shoe. In short, an investment in lasting quality, that, for many, has fostered a lifetime appreciation of fine footwear.
    For anyone looking to make their first investment in a high-quality, Goodyear welted leather dress shoe, there is no better place to start than the Allen Edmond’s Park Avenue. This simple cap-toe oxford is a classic - a staple that belongs in almost every closet. And there is no surprise that Park Avenue is easily Allen Edmond’s #1 selling dress shoe. And for $425, it is a pretty good value.
    The Allen Edmonds Park Avenue is available in six finishes in calfskin and three finishes in cordovan. In this review, we will be discussing the finish #5610 Dark Chili. For a more extensive review on the Park Avenue, check out our more extensive Park Avenue Review.
    The Allen Edmonds Park Avenue in #5610 Dark Chili is probably my favorite of all of Allen Edmond’s brown finishes. It is quite light in color. This is the lightest-brown Park Avenue that Allen Edmonds sells. This is a great, more casual dress shoe that is great for anyone that dresses in lighter-colored suits.
    The two closest other Allen Edmonds finishes to the #5956 Walnut are:
    #5956 Walnut
    #2179 Coffee
    #5610 Dark Chili
    #5609 Oxblood
    One of the things I love about a beautiful brown shoe, especially one made from a high-quality open grain leather, is that the patina, or color, really evolves the more you polish the shoe. It is this patina that gives a shoe character as it ages and makes it totally unique to you. Even polishing a shoe like the #5610 Dark Chili with a simple light brown polish will darken and burnish the leather over time as the open pore structure accumulates oils and other waxes
    This finish could easily be taken in several different directions. You could evolve and darken the entire finish by using a Dark Brown or mahogany shoe polish. Or you could burnish the edges using dark brown…
    The Allen Edmonds Park Avenue in calfskin is a truly iconic American-made shoe that is constructed with a nice full-grain, open pour leather, a 360-degree Goodyear welt, and full leather outsole. For anyone looking to begin investing in high-quality leather dress shoes, the Allen Edmond Park Avenue is a great place to begin.

    My first AEs were dark chili (Rogues as factory 2nds). I got them to get into AEs and there were no styles I liked in Oxblood/Burgundy on sale in my size at that time. I fell in love with it the minute I unboxed them. And I grow t love it more every time I wear them. For maintenance I use the AE chili cream I got from the AE store (seems pretty good) and saphir tobacco pate deluxe for wax. Thanks to your videos and retail side I tried renovataeur on them last week and they LOVED it! WOW!

    It is a nice shade for that shoe. It also looks good on a more casual cut shoe (e.g., LaSalle with the split "Algonquian" toe). As far as Dark Chili being the most "formal" brown color in the A-E catalog, I suppose that remains a matter of opinion. The Park Avenue in dark brown cordovan is a much darker brown, more toward the Alden "Cigar" and is more formal, if that means more restrained and darker.

    One note on this specific shoe / color - I have noticed that it does not react well to photography, still or video. I could not properly capture the color with my phone's camera, and this video doesn't quite get it either. Truthfully, it looks better than this. If you're skeptical, I'd suggest going to a store to check it out. Really happy with my pair.

    Hey Kirby, thanks for the informative videos. I'm debating between getting a pair of cigar and a pair of oxblood versus purchasing a pair of dark chili. I suspect the dark chili is half way between the cigar and the oxblood on the "brown-red" spectrum. How versatile is the cigar? How different is the cigar from the dark chili What would you advise?

    • @jcphenry
      @jcphenry Před 4 lety

      Cigar is darker, more burnt umber in shade, with much less red/orange cast (none, really.)

  • @edf2953

    Another very nice video, Kirby. Well done. I hope you don’t think I’m nitpicking, however; Allen Edmonds has reduced the prices of its Heritage Classic Line of shoes which includes the Park Avenue. This is a permanent price reduction and not a sale price. Accordingly, the Park Avenue regular price is now $395 not the $425 as mentioned in your video. As this is a fairly new development at AE I thought you would want to know.

    Hi Kirby, thanks for another awesome video! My questions is:
    Allen Edmonds released a line of shoes this year they call the New Americans Collection, which features a “360 Speed Welt.”
    Any idea what this is?? Is this AEs way of re-naming a Blake stitch? What else could a ‘speed welt be’?
    I would love you if knew the answer!
    Thanks again,
    Morgan

    • @JohnNathanShopper
      @JohnNathanShopper Před 5 lety

      Morgan Denebeim They're using "speed welt" terminology for the old Road Warriors, which were always considered recraftable. My guess is Blake Rapid stitch.

    You recommended two different colors of Saphir for dark chili in two different videos, which is very confusing. Is median brown better or cognac if you want so just keep the original color?

    • @alexanderstark9142
      @alexanderstark9142 Před 4 lety +1

      Use a cognac for accentuating the browns and mahogany for the reds if you don’t want to alter the shade. Medium brown should be used if you want to darken it slightly
