Allen Edmonds $100 Ebay Challenge | Great Shoes For Less

  • Customers are always asking us, "What is a good shoe under $100?" The answer? Not many. Shoes under the $100 price tag are generally not made very well. Sure, you can find some here and there, usually on sale or factory seconds, but generally speaking, shoes under $100 are just NOT made well.
    Searching through websites such as eBay, or even Shopgoodwill.com, are GREAT places to find used, or even slightly used, shoes that are very well made and much, much cheaper. I can't tell you just how many Allen Edmonds, Ferragamos, Aldens, etc. that I have found on these sites for under $30. Even at that price, you still have money to refurbish them and still come out right at $100. Case in point, it's smarter to buy a lightly used high-quality shoe for $100 than it is to spend that same money on a cheaply made shoe for the same price. You'll have the high-quality shoes for much, much longer!
    Want to have your shoes refurbished? Looking for the BEST shoe creams, soaps, waxes, brushes, shoe trees...and much more? Find it all here:

    Keep in mind that when you buy shoes on-line you have no idea about the fit. I’m a Thrift store hound. You can find awesome deals if you know the brand names. I’ll find three, or four, name brand shoes (not my size), and trade them for a great pair of shoes or boots(my size), with my shoe cobbler.

    Wonderful job, loved the video. Very well done, a pleasure to whach. Completely agree with the comment cobblers are so under appreciated. I'm from a shoe manufacturing town in Brazil, all my working life I've been in the shoe components business, started when I was 23 - just turned 59. During that time I've visited most shoe factories and repair wholesalers in the US. What a wonderful time it was back then. Will never forget the distinct perfume of leather & glue in a shoe factory, all the genuine, real nice folks I've got to know in my trade. In the 80's and 90's there was still a lot of shoe factories in the US, it's nearly all gone to Asia now, except for a handful of mid and small size factories. Maybe this pandemic will show that no country should give up all it's manufacturing. I still supply some soles to Allen- Edmonds to this day, have been to their factory in Port Washington many times in all these years, they make world class shoes there, definitely highest qualify and extremely comfortable to wear. They've halted shoe production to make 5k masks a day during the pandemic, to help the health system. Hope this ordeal will be over soon and life back to normal. Stay safe.

      @@Kslater23 Good question. Most sellers will state the condition along with pictures from multiple angles. If you have questions or concerns about the condition, just ask the seller. Obviously, buying second hand has its risks, but it also has its rewards. As far as the lining and uppers, we're just wanting to know if there are holes or rips. Another question, I'd ask if not stated is how old and how often were they worn.

    More than just tears and gouges on the upper, you also have to look out for surface peeling of the lacquer used on corrected grain shoes - even some AE shoes use corrected grain leather. When it's a hi-shine finish almost always a plasticy lacquer has been applied to the surface. Over time this cracks and then begins to peel away. Shoe polish won't fix this. To a lesser extent this also applies to shoes embossed with a pattern, such as scotch grain. Damage to the embossing, such as scuffs, can't be repaired or polished out. Scuffs on full grain calf skin that hasn't been embossed will polish right out, generally.

    Started getting into dress lace ups earlier this year and long story short, I recently bought my first pair of Allen Edmonds on eBay! They're a model that's been out of production for probably 10 years now (Byron), but they were in great shape for $58 and in my size (11D), so I got them! Although the length and width were both perfect, the instep was too roomy, requiring me to put some insoles in the shoes, but now they fit very well overall! The previous owner also glued on these ugly yellow crepe rubber heel pads, so I had those pulled off (only $10 for the job). Now they're back to where they should be!
    I've got my eye on a second pair of Allen Edmonds to add to my wardrobe, but I'd like to try and buy that pair new (albeit factory seconds on sale). I like to try to support these companies as much as possible, but I'm also a bit on the cheap side ($120 is my max price for dress shoes), so it's a matter of waiting for the right opportunity! I think with brands above Allen Edmonds (Magnanni, Santoni, Carmina, etc.) that I may have to go with used shoes all the time, but that's not a huge deal. The one thing I learned, though, is not to go into one of these brands' stores and tell them that you're planning on buying used shoes on eBay...the guy at my closest Allen Edmonds store was noticeably put off when I mentioned the possibility of doing that.

    • @TrentonHeath

      Matt W Thanks for sharing! As we mentioned in the video, buying great, high-quality shoes, even if they’re used, is much better than buying cheaply made, low-quality shoes. Good for you for buying the AE’s! Keep your eyes open, as there’s always great deals online. Haha...yeah, you may want to keep that to yourself and not tell the stores. 😉

    Being a cowboy boot fan and you being in Nashville would love to see a complete renovation and resole of a pair of good quality boots.

      ianmedium Thanks for the sub! Vienna, Austria? 🇦🇹 If so, we’ve been there several times. Beautiful city.
      Yes, we’ll definitely do a cowboy boot refurbishment.

    I love your videos and have opened my eyes about what different brands that I have never heard off. I have wide feet and I have been buying Florsheim for years since they have a lot of options for it. I live in Miami and would like to know where else can I go to buy my shoes for a change or which other good manufacturers have the wide feet option. Thanks.

      For boots Red Wing and Keen are good for wideness. Here's a list too:

    As mentioned in another one of your videos, you reuse the holes in the welt when sewing the new sole to the shoe. How do you know when starting the sewing from the bottom where the holes are? I'm assuming that you push an awl through a hole so you have a starting point, but figured I would ask. Also, what edge dressing do you recommend? I have a pair of Walnut Strand's that could use a touch-up. Thank and keep up the great videos!

    • @TrentonHeath
      @TrentonHeath  Před 5 lety +1

      Jared Ward We adjust the machine beforehand so that the stitch width is the same as original and pre-punch a hole that we use as the starting point (sort of like what you mentioned with the awl). We use Angelus and Fiebings when staining leathers after a repair, but when it comes to the upkeep of soles on a pair we’re polishing, we don’t like using edge dressing. I know a lot of “shoe shine guys” use it, but we don’t. Using a shoe cream around the edges of your soles/heels, we feel, does a much better job. Also, it comes in a lot more colors than edge dressings. Again, this is just our opinions.

    Great video, Trenton. Thanks for sharing. A general question, if I may. In all your experience working with shoes, have you ever come across shoes made by Charles Chester? If you have, may I ask your opinion of them? Thank you.

    Here’s a question: what if the leather inside the shoe, near the sole, wears off from heel rub? Can those inside pieces be replaced or repaired?

    • @cassetoi09
      @cassetoi09 Před 4 lety +3

      yes they can be replaced with new pieces

    My eBay Allen Edmonds experience:
    1. Popular models are always more than 70 bugs and you have to resole them (Strands, McAllister, Park Ave)
    2. Not so popular styles you can get for less than 30 bugs, and no resoling required. Like Derby’s, split toes and loafer. Must be patient
    3. Most eBay sellers know the price. Thrift shop deals are most times better. You can get shoes for 5 bugs, no resoling necessary
    I hate to spend all these shipping costs on eBay. It adds up quite a bit

    Nice video. Although I would suggest you should show a full 360 camera preview of the after product at the end of the video. Also would appreciate if you show which specific polishes you’re using to polish and give it that shine so it makes it easier to purchase off of your website. Thank you

    I have the same AE shoes. What's your opinion on putting a rubber piece on the sole to prevent wearing through leather? I'm amazed that people just throw away shoes without going to the "shoe guy." Have never tried the re-crafting service from AE but bought the shoes because they are "re-craftable" as the ad copy says.

    Great video! I'm learning alot from ya'll but yes, I'm not likely to spend more then 100-150 on a pair of shoes and at that price, they need to last. I'd like to see more casual shoes at this price point!
