- In today’s video, we’re going to review the Allen Edmonds Park Avenue in the color #5956 Walnut. The purpose of this review is to discuss what we like about the finish and compare it to Allen Edmond’s other similar colors.
Our reviews are special and different because of extensive access to Allen Edmond’s complete catalog, which will allow us to film the most comprehensive, and in-depth collection of dress shoe reviews available anywhere. If you are looking to purchase a pair of Allen Edmonds, look at our reviews. We are not paid for these reviews, and all shoes are returned to Allen Edmonds after we are finished with them.
BRAND OVERVIEW
Allen Edmonds is one of the few remaining “great American shoemakers,” still making their premium leather dress shoes here in the United States. Allen Edmonds makes an excellent Goodyear welted leather dress shoe that, if properly polished and resoled, can last a lifetime.
For many of our viewers, Allen Edmonds is their first experience with a high-quality, Goodyear welted leather dress shoe. In short, an investment in lasting quality, that, for many, has fostered a lifetime appreciation of fine footwear.
For anyone looking to make their first investment in a high-quality, Goodyear welted leather dress shoe, there is no better place to start than the Allen Edmond’s Park Avenue. This simple cap-toe oxford is a classic - a staple that belongs in almost every closet. And there is no surprise that the Park Avenue is easily Allen Edmond’s #1 selling dress shoe. And for $425, it is a pretty good value.
The Allen Edmonds Park Avenue is available in six finishes in calfskin and three finishes in cordovan. In this review, we will be discussing the finish #5956 Walnut. For a more extensive review on the Park Avenue, check out our more extensive Park Avenue Review.
SHOE FINISH SPOTLIGHT
The Allen Edmonds Park Avenue in Walnut is what I would refer to as a “classic light brown or chestnut.” It is quite light in color. This is the lightest-brown Park Avenue that Allen Edmonds sells. This is a great, more casual dress shoe that is great for anyone that dresses in lighter-colored suits.
The two closest other Allen Edmonds finishes to the #5956 Walnut are:
#2179 Coffee
#5610 Dark Chili
One of the things I love about a beautiful brown shoe, especially one made from a high-quality open grain leather, is that the patina, or color, really evolves the more you polish the shoe. It is this patina that gives a shoe character as it ages and makes it totally unique to you. Even polishing a shoe like the #5956 Walnut with a simple light brown polish will darken and burnish the leather over time as the open pore structure accumulates oils and other waxes
This finish could easily be taken in several different directions. You could evolve and darken the entire finish by using a Dark Brown or mahogany shoe polish. Or you could burnish the edges using dark brown…
If you have an exceptionally beautiful pair of Allen Edmond’s Park Avenues, please post a picture of them on Instagram and hashtag us with #kirbyallison and #hangerproject. We’d love to see you share your shine!

I love your channel Kirby! Keep up the good work!
Nice Review,
You failed to mention AE'S Walnut polish. It is specifically made for AE walnut shoes and it does a remarkable job keeping the walnut color original.
Hello Kirby, Great video on the walnut color. I own a pair of McAlister's in the color and it one shoe that i find is very versatile to wear. I am in Wyoming this week and going to miss you in San Antonio, I hope to made see you in another location this year. Take care good Sir.
Great review/channel! I’m buying my first set of AEs (Park Avenue) this week based on your prior review.
Do you have any opinions/experiences with Ledbury Bespoke shirts? I have an appt for my first bespoke shirt with them next month as they’re 2 hours from my home in VA.
Looking forward to seeing your Strand review!
Hey Kriby. I ordered these shoes because of your videos. Love the content you make and you're really an inspiration to me to be better dressed. I was thinking of getting the saphir cognac cream polish to use on them. Would this be an alright choice?
Hi, what colour for shoe cream or polish do you recommend for AE walnut?
I have a pair of Strand walnut that is faded. What color/colors would you suggest using Saphire cream polish?
Your video mentions there is six colors of park avenue shoes 👞 even showing a BLUE/black finish option. What’s the name of the blue finish color shown on your video? It doesn’t appear on AE’s website!
The Park Avenue and other timeless classics are some of the shoes at any price that I can get to fit my size 13A feet.
Hey Kirby , you should do a video on how to polish shoes with patina
Very nice suit. What type of wool is this?
Hope ya do an oxblood park ave review
Anybody know what the numbers inside the shoe mean? How can I tell when my shoe was manufactured?
Do you plan on doing some Merlots?
Love ur videos
I just purchased a factory seconds pair of these shoes. I was really disappointed. I expected there to be a minor issue with the shoes but the cap toe has some really weird dark streaks in the leather. I'm just starting to get into these shoes and was wondering if this is something I can fix with polishing or if I should return them? any suggestions are appreciated.
I’d return and go for another pair.
Did they discontinue the dark brown in calfskin? I have that but I don't see it pictured as one of those six in the back at 1:59?
I need that purplish pair in the front...
They've discontinued dark brown entirely.
@@Cjur wow thanks
I have a collectors item now
I was a life long J&M customer til they capitulated and started putting out crappy shoes. Now, Solely AE. They are great shoes, well built, and taken care of will definitely last a lifetime.
What belt color should I match with the Allen Edmonds walnut color? Should it be tan or light brown?
Hoping that you review a few true dark brown shoes in the future. I bought a pair of used walnut allen edmonds and colored them darker with fiebings dark brown.
Could you review the indepence line? I don't live near an AE store and I was going to grab the jefferson and bartlett online. Thanks
We have a sample. But to be frank, it was so unimpressive, we decided not to do the review. The shoe is really not a dress shoe. It lacks any hard countering. The areas of the shoe that should be hard, are soft (like the toe cap, heel). And the leather doesn't look any nicer - in fact, it looks less expensive.
@@kirbyallison wow. I appreciate the help. I guess I'll get the park avenues and save my money. Thanks!
i have the black chelseas, nomad chukkas and 2 porters sneakers etc.. what bothers me about AE is that they say water proof and i can tell u that my black leather chelseas didnt take water that well even though it was super light water and i had my davek umbrella and my brown nomads have rain spots bc of light rain also. it annoys me bc it says water proof and clearly my shoes got a little damaged. also i keep hearing a squeak in my left shoe for chelsea and thats the leather but still bro wtf its embarrassing
i need to order some 5956 walnut. help!!
Are there any other American brands that can compare to A&E?
Alden, which is more expensive, but also, higher quality. Florsheim still makes a few classic wingtip models that are of a comparable quality to AE (albeit being produced in Asia), for a very fair price. Everything else is, pretty much, garbage.
Why not a very dark brown.
They darkened thr walnut color recently. I prefer the lighter. Still a great color tho
they did didn't they
Lighter is too flashy for business attire. Darker is the way to go.
Thnks ilike shoes tomarraw I bai ishaa allah
First
Allen Edmonds are good quality shoe but no style whatsoever boring boring round shoe its 2019 not 1980
Lucky Strike some looks never go out of style.
What, to you, is a less boring dress shoe?
AE is not “high quality”. 3 out of 10 max. You know it. Thank you
111ImNumber1 what’re you talking about? For the price, you’re getting an awesome shoe. They hold up well and shine very well. They’re very classical and conservative designs, but for 425, it’s a great value. You can often find them for so much cheaper on EBay, usually, around the 100-200s. You can’t beat that
Harrison Cameron Wedgeworth they offer good value not “high quality”. Different
111ImNumber1 you said it as if they’re garbage and aren’t using full grain open pore leather and can use up to JR double oak soles... they can easily last you up to 10-20 years
Harrison Cameron Wedgeworth first, they use JR only for their cordovan shoes, ok. Second, no they are nowhere near what I call high quality shoes like G&G, EG, JL, Cleverly etc. Third, the finishing on their shoes lacks esthetics or refinement... all that with no reference to price. At the end of the day you get what you pay for
111ImNumber1 of course they’re not going to be the exact same quality as a 1300+ shoe.. but the fact of the matter that, for example, I can buy a Normandy boot with double oak JR soles, or their cordovan shoes, with frequently sales speaks for itself. With proper polishing, you can easily make an AE last a very long time. Not everyone is able to shell out that kind of cash, but 200-425? It’s a high quality product for an excellent price. It’s more like a 7/10. I’m not denying I’d spend more money on an Edward green or something.. but AE still uses very high quality hides. Of course there is no « patina Pete » giving each of these a hand finish, but you still can obtain some very nice Patinas and finishes if you start in the ox bloods or merlots. Is it a G and G? No. But is it a 3/10? No.
your eyes look creepy I'm sorry
