What I loved about the Ed Sullivan Show (we watched it every Sunday) everybody sang with the orchestra or with a group. Performances were live there was no lip-synching on The Ed Sullivan Show. Ed wouldn't allow it. That's what I loved about this show and about this time.
On a side note, Ed Sullivan show was featured in a Sgt. Bilko episode with Phil Silvers. Brilliant 😂
Yup! That; Mitch Miller Show was great too!
Ed's rule of live singing backfired with The Doors when they did "Light My Fire". He understandably didn't shake their hands & never had them back.
On this appearance, Dusty sang over the pre-recorded track that was used for the original recording.
Our family would sit together in the living room and watch The Ed Sullivan Show. He had entertainment from ALL OVER THE WORLD.
Her rendition of "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" is Perfection. Live B&W TV show.
"The Look of Love"
Smokin'....
Hi Guys greetings from England 🇬🇧 Dusty was an iconic english singer with such a rich voice!!! Dusty was born in London and was one of the first ever female english singers to make it big in America 🇺🇸 and she was part of the famous English invasion of The USA in the 1960s.tragically Dusty passed away far too early in 1999 and you should check out Dusty singing "The Look of Love" this really is a great song. Also in the 1980s Dusty and The Pet Shop Boys recorded a song together called "What Have I Done To Deserve This" and this song shows a different style to Dusty Singing.
English by birth, proudly Irish by heritage. She was born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien. It may be possible to get more Irish than that ... but not *much* more.
The song that made Dusty a star -> "Wishin' & Hopin'"
A lot more hits before that in the U.K.
The look of love, and wishing and hoping are a couple of Dustys many hits. Love her voice!
Some of her ashes were scattered from the top of the Cliffs of Moher on the west coast of Ireland .. a beautiful soul, taken too early.
There’s no doubt that Dusty Springfield was the best female blue eyed soul singer ever. The sad part about her is that she had a very troubled life. RIP Dusty
...Dusty is amazing and unique... try: Dusty & the Pet Shop Boys: 'What have I done to deserve this' 😎
Dusty in Memphis is one of the top 100 albums of the last century according to rolling stone magazine. You should listen to the album. You should listen to Joss Stone also, she is a modern day Dusty Springfield.
Joss is good but no dusty
Joss Stone has an amazing voice!!! Norah Jones' voice reminds me of both too!
The Windmills of Your Mind is another great one by Dusty. Noel Harrison performed the song for the movie The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) and it won an Oscar for Best Song, but I prefer Dusty's version on the Dusty in Memphis album.
Sting later covered it for the 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair.
This is one of the great British female singers from the 60's. She had such a beautiful unique voice & covered many genres (blue-eyed soul, pop ,ballads, country, jazz). "Son Of A Preacher Man" is her most famous song. But she had a lot of hits such as "Wishin' & Hopin'", "I Only Want To Be With You", "I'll Try Anything", "The Look Of Love", "The Windmills Of Your Mind", "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" & many more.
Nothing but Beauty and Class. And talent. She's 3 times a lady.
The Queen of Blue-Eyed Soul! Dusty!
Born to Irish parents in London
Dusty has to be one of the coolest female performers ever. She’s just special
Dusty Springfield an amazing artist, some of her tracks which I recommend you continue with are:
"I Close My Eyes and Count to Ten",
"Wishin' and Hopin'",
"Spooky",
"I Only Want to be With You",
"If You Go Away",
"The Look of Love",
"You Don't Own Me",
"I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself",
"Little By Little",
"Am I the Same Girl",
"Just a Little Lovin'",
"Goin' Back",
"In the Middle of Nowhere",
"Nothing Has Been Proved" with 'The Pet Shop Boys',
"What Have I Done to Deserve This?" with 'The Pet Shop Boys'.
There are many more but these are some of my favourites.
She’s great!
Couple of suggestions:
Patsy Cline (live and you won’t believe her voice!)
Brenda Lee-ditto
Next, "I Only Wanna Be With You" and "Wishin and Hopin".
My mom would get her hair all done up like that back in the day! I remember watching the Ed Sullivan show!
Mine too….lol
See the two NME poll winners concert clips of Dusty singing live in 65 and 66, She also had her own tv show in the mid 60s.
Her hair almost screams 1960s...love the Dust!
perfect follow up CHER - Gypsys Tramps and Theives , live from Sonny and Cher show
I spent a wk. on R&R in Sydney, Australia. What a rush! From Viet. War to Sydney in one short flight. I met an Aussie gal & we went out for dinner & to see Dusty Springfield performing in a club live. 1969!!! It was so good & so was the young lady that I managed to go back about 6 wks. later for a wk. of Leave before going home.
Everything about this performance is perfect. I love her outfit 🔥❤
Dusty Springfield iconic Vocalist , amazing career. Huge huge star
In the 80's she did a song with the Pet Shop Boys called What Have I Done To Deserve This
..I'm truly surprised anybody ever saw Dusty Springfield as "Sweet & Innocent!" 🤣❤
Far from it. If you know, you know
Real name Mary O'Brien from the UK. She was very popular in Australia also. Still love this particular song.
love some Dusty, The Look Of Love or Close My Eyes And Count To Ten should be among your next Dusty tunes! Great memories!
One of her best!
Yay, anytime yall release a video is another great day. 🥰
Female blue-eyed soul from an Irish girl. The song was originally given to Aretha. She turned it down because of its suggestive sexual topic. She eventually recorded it anyway, after Dusty had the hit with it. Dusty and her siblings started out as The Springfields and were popular in Britain. They wrote songs that became hits for The Seekers. Elvis loved those musicians and the production, which became known as The Memphis Sound. Elvis came to that studio a year later and recorded a few albums there, which are now Elvis In Memphis. Check out the Elvis songs, "Stranger in My Hometown" and "Baby, You're Wearing That Loved on Look" for Elvis' Memphis sound with the same musicians and similar arrangements.
No English born In London
Perfect for the 60,s the big hair the outfit 60s all the way.
Close My Eyes and Count to Ten , Dusty`s finest
Yes she does make it look easy…😊❤ Have you done” Harper Valley PTA”? That would be Jeannie C. Riley.
Bouffant hair styles AND wigs were so popular then. I'm thinking it's a wig. Thank you for reacting to one of the best female voices of the time!
Yes. Big hair like that was not invented by Amy Winehouse although some people seem to think she created the style.
I was introduced to this song on Pulp Fiction. Loved it ever since! Maybe that's why the title sounds familiar. The entire Pulp Fiction soundtrack is fire!!
OMG
I cried
Dusty was so awesome
Love this song great reaction ❤❤
I love Dusty! Thanks for your reactions. I love her cover of "Spooky".
Favourite Dusty Springfield song "Bits and Pieces" from the great movie "The Stuntman"(1980).
She is singing live, but the music is the original studio track. She was a great singer!
This song always reminds me of when I was 16 years old and went to church all the time. It might have had something to do with our preacher having 3 teenage sons. Take it from there, ha ha.
Amazing Dusty....always brill....huge rabbit hole 😊
Iconic tune from a woman with one of the most sensual voices I have ever heard. From her Dusty In Memphis album. I think it is the fifth album by her
I think this was the first Dusty Springfield song I heard when I was a teenager 50 years ago! I always thought she was a Southern woman after hearing this song. To my surprise she turns out to be English! You should really listen to her cover of If You Go Away (the BBC performance)! The song is originally in French and is called Ne Me Quitte Pas. In this performance she actually sings a verse in the original French. Very moving!
This song has been covered by quite a few other artists. Should also give her collab with The Pet Shop boys a listen, "What Have I Done To Deserve This"
Platinum Princess Leah. Yes it was used in Pulp Fiction.
I like that song with Dusty Springfield and The Pet Shop Boys "What Have I Done to Deserve This". I like a lot of songs by The Pet Shop Boys, but this one is a great collaboration.
Absolute stunner! For some Dusty drama try ‘You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me’ and for something totally different her collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys on ‘What Have I Done to Deserve This?’ Preferably the live performance at the BRITS Awards 1988.
Very good shouts
before dusty went solo she had some success with the springfields,a folk group
“Going Back” is a great song from Dusty.
I left home aged 16 after a major spat with my family. Nowhere to live. No work. Nothing to look forward to & too much pride to accept any fault. Survived the London streets of the mid '60's for nearly a year. Heard 'Going Back' playing on a radio, somewhere. It hit a chord & I took Dusty's advice. That song turned my life around.
Thank you, Dusty. R.I.P.
This is one of her best songs. When I was in grade school, "Wishin' and Hopin" was very popular, it played on the radio all of the time.
This is off her album Dusty in Memphis. The album has been put in the library of Congress recognising its importance. Most people have heard Cher’s Recording of this.
😊 groovy blouse!
all time classic! ♥
The bassline that you were talking about that you recognized was used in a song done by Cypress Hill in an album called Black Sunday the song is called Hits from the Bong
Recommend for next Dusty Springfield - The Look Of Love or I Only Want To Be With You
and if you are feeling adventurous check out Volbeat's cover of I Only Want To Be With You
If you want more of a gospel sound from Dusty, check out I Found My Way. So so good.
Joss Stone does a great job on this song!
Pure Soul
Now we talking music !
The best era ever !
Cool reaction guys .
My favourite couple here !
👍👍👍💕🇸🇪😎
'Dust In Memphis' 1968. I bought it on release day in the UK!
Dusty Springfield and Scott Walker duet - Let It Be Me
hits from the bong
I recommend trying Needles and Pins from her.
Gotta check out Dusty's cover of the Van Morrison classic - Tupelo Honey!
As sampled by Cypress Hill's 'Hits From the Bong'
I remember when that song came out. I was like, this isn't Dusty Springfield.
Another great cut from Dusty In Memphis: "Windmills Of Your Mind"
I Close My Eyes and Count To Ten is my fav, but she has so many, you can't go wrong whichever track you pick next.
This was in Pulp Fiction bro!
Dusty had a hit with Richard Carpenter in 1987 called "Something in Your Eyes".
Blue-eyed soul.
This British artist was often mistaken by radio listers to b=e a Black female artist of the "Motown" record label, in the mid 60s. She got soul! Once she appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, a lot of jaws dropped in surprise. Great artist, and very Big in the 1960s. Her and Petula Clark, were maybe the only female artists of "The British Invasion," of the 1960s.
If you don`t know this song, you haven`t seen Pulp Fiction, you should watch it, great movie.
Sounds track to Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs are amazing.
👍have a Blessed Da🦋
Good catch, Pulp Fiction!
Love oldies. React to Leslie Gore You Don’t Own Me. There are so many great tunes from the ‘50 ‘60 ‘70s. ❤
If you grew up in the church like I did you would know that the preacher's kid was always the wildest ❗😂👍 Boy or Girl ❗🤣
Wind Mills of my mind , One of her most beautiful songs ! And it's one of those songs from the 70s that was covered a zillion times , But nobody covered it like her !
I believe it was sampled by Cypress Hill in their song Hits from the Bong. I believe it was back in the late nineties.
Ironically, Dusty would've preferred the daughter of a preacher man.
This reminds me of Bobby Gentry in the Ode to Billie Joe!
Dusty in Nashville 1967
I was wrong hey I got the state right at least
Dusty was one of the greatest singers ever thankfully was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame a few days after her passing. I only Wanna Be With You, Wishing and Hoping and A Brand New Me r very good also. Her and Linda Ronstat r noted to do covers as good or better than the original. Am I the Same Girl by Barb Acklin, Anyone who had a Heart by D.Warwick, and more.
Dusty was part of Motown.
Dusty was English and we don't have "preacher men" over here, it's an American thing.Cypress Hill sampled it in Hits From The Bong. (You were smoking way back when!)😂😂😂😂😂
You should listen to "I close my eyes and count to ten", a masterpiece.
I think the remix song (beginning of this song) was done by Cyprus Hill "Hits from the bong", ...i think! 🤔
Love this song
“Dusty In Memphis”
I highly recommend Peggy Lee. Wonderful sultry voice. The songs most people know from her are "Fever" and "He's a Tramp". Do check her out! :)
The bass quitar is still smoking as it was so hot!
🔥🔥🔥
Dusty pretty much introduced soul music to Britain - when it was largely alienated in the US - and is possibly important in that. Also in her voice. And, oh, not performing to apartheid audiences in South Africa. That probably too, but these days it's hard to tell....
Her version of the Goffin/King song 'Goin Back' is sublime and heartbreaking
Dusty in Memphis, 1969.
Loved Dusty as a kid in England, with her group, the Springfields, with her brother. The sole exception was their take on 'Spanish Harlem', which didn't stand up to the original, which I'd just heard and was dismayed to hear a relatively pallid cover, as was the custom in those days. Was delighted when she went solo and crossed the pond sometime after my family did. She certainly earned her accolades and at minimum cult status all these years later. Thanks for this.
😘🤙🏼🎶❤️☀️🕊
Love it
Check out Lulu "To Sir With Love" next please.
