Yeah I misspelled "legendary" but I'm too lazy to make another video :)
You sir, are my hero. I've just been messing with selective foiling of Netrunner Identities and while I haven't gotten it all down, it's a significant step forward.
Bro this is so cool. Thanks for speaking clearly and not putting in filler
Ledgendary Wizzard....
All that work and you gotta do it again. Damned typos win once again.
+Wes Whitacre ahahaha, but still, this guy is awesome
Typo is intended , this way it is clear not a WoTC product and thus can not be sued for creating such.
This is really cool, thanks for sharing. I've always wanted some custom tokens, now I know how to make my own, thanks again.
I've started using this process for my own custom set and it's been wonderful, thank you so much for working this all out!
how do you know that you will keep printing on the same part? i have the card ready and the design but getting it positioned right is my problem, like what way do i put the piece of paper back in and all
@@nerdzzbob6961 There is a previous video explaining the orientation of the paper and card.
What I am curious about is the document positioning
I am so gonna spend way to much money on this...
Thanks for the tutorial man!
I just did it! It worked great! I used the inkaid since the Golden ground is discontinued.
Josh Vanyo what kind of printer do you have? That's all I need but I don't wanna spend a bunch on it
This method works well, but I find I have the best results when using multiple layers of the glass/tile medium and inkaid mix. Also, bright color cards are much easier to print than dark cards. White and blue cards are phenomenal while black and green tend to get smudgy or streak or blur or just look too dark. You have to play around with contrast and lightness in GIMP and be ready to sacrifice a few prepped cards to each successful print.
Also, DO NOT USE PAPER AS A CARRIER SHEET. Use a stiffer material like a light, flexible cardboard or heavy paper. Normal paper will get off-center in your printer and you will misprint your cards. Then you have to acetone them all over again and it's a giant pain.
Finally, be careful about applying the liquitex gloss varnish. From my experience, it basically dizzolves all the layers together to bring out the foil at the back. Only apply small amounts at a time or you will get giant smudges on your card.
Hey Brian maybe you can help. I am trying to strip the ink using acetone and it's not working; the darker ink is refusing to budge, while the lighter areas are stripped so easily that the foil backing itself is being removed. Not sure if Ultimate Masters foils are just super-resilient to acetone, or if the acetone I'm using is trash.
UPDATE: problem is UMA foils. Tried a foil from M13 and it worked
@@curtist6022 Just an FYI, the same happens with New Capenna foils. They are resilient to be removed
Amazing vid! Thanks for sharing all your hard work and knowledge with us! ^_^
This is a really stunning effect :)
Awesome video! As a player and a judge, their are some guidelines to altered art to use in events. So I have two questions: is there a noticeable thickness difference when the card is finished compared to an original card? And how hard is it to keep parts of the original ink?
Also, I just purchased all the products I need to give this a shot, i'm very excited
Harrison Jensen How did it turn out?
This is so cool...
If only I had an ink jet printer. I'd like to try this out.
So if you wanted the entire card to shine rather than just highlight areas, it would be okay to use a thin layer of gloss varnish for the whole card?
Excellent video. I just made my first card and it turned out great until the varnish step. I have a couple questions. 1.) Have you tried using a foam brush to apply the folk art amd/or inkaid?
2.) when you dilute the varnish, what would you say would be a good ratio?
use inkAID Clear Gloss Precoat or precoat type II?
Beautiful work.
"Ledgendary Creature" So much work for a beautiful proxy, and there's that obvious typo? :(
omg xD
Might be deliberate? Maybe its like a meme going on at their lgs?
Evan L it's how you prevent WOTC for coming after you for printing cards.
They need typos or you could possibly be sued
We play Proxy Legacy at my LGS and your proxy must have a typo or you can't play with it.
@@SomeJustice19k Then your LGS is full of idiots. Find a new one.
Hey, great vid. I'm in the UK. Anyone know where I can get the Clear Inkaid? Thanks a bunch
great video, very well explained! by the way... what kind of paper is the magic card printed on? some call it foil but i think it's some other kind. do you know the name of it?
OMG Incredible art! im gonna do my own fanarts i hope show you soon :)
dope art!
This is the first time im seeing this version of making Holo Oricas.
Is it a better way than the other way I know of printing on transparency paper?
Any suggestions as to which vrsion gets a 'clear' end result better? thanks!
What would you recommend I cannot find gold and clear digital ground anywear for purches
Golden clear digital ground has been discontinued and I can't find it anywhere, and i was wondering if you have been able to find a functional replacement for it since the creation of this video?
InkAid (any gloss version will do) is a good substitute but i advise you may need to buy 2. I am doing this process as well but the brush method is not giving an even coat.
Fresko21 apply 2 coating once horizontal then when its dried apply again vertically.
The coating should be thin. If you see any glops on it you should brush it off with the brush before it dries
I highly reccomend buying some foam brushes on amazon for applying the medium. Brushes tend to leave streaks.
can you get the digital ground at walmart? or where at a local store?
@RevesArt Hi, thanks for the explanation, I wondered so long how these were made before finding your video.....
Since it was posted in 2015, I would like to ask if there is any new printer that would do better job than the Envy 120, now in 2020 ?
Since there's no activity on YT or on his blog, it seems like you wouldn't get an answer. Sorry bro. Basically one thing: use a photo inkjet printer which can do 2400dpi at least, that should bring you good results. It's waaay harder to find replacements for the substances he used as those aren't produced anymore.
Can you do a side by side comparison of Gloss v Decal finished proxies?
Hey have you ever tried printing multiple cards on one sheet at a time? I just tried something similar with a different coating.
Any tips on painting the digital ground on? I always get streaks! Do you only apply one layer?
shes wizzing off that ledge! seriously though this was a helpful vid, thanks!
Wow, tnks, thast great! Now im looking for a Inkjet Receptive Coating in spain but i cant find nothing similar here...
This is super good work and thanks for teaching me how to do this, but imho it's not quite this easy and takes quite a bit of experimentation to get it right.
I found that when using a foil base card, one coat of the 50/50 mix you recommend caused my images to blur and distort. I had much better luck with two to four coats painted on perpendicularly to one another.
The color of the cards you print matters a lot.Too dark and they will line and blur; too light and it will look washed out. I found that if I wanted a card to turn out properly (especially high contrast cards with lots of black), I had to be prepared to print it several times on several different blanks with different contrast and saturation settings on my photoshop program (GIMP).
Finally, I found regular printer paper too weak for use as a carrier sheet. The paper would move in the printer, causing the image to print to one side of the card. Super annoying. I recommend smaller sheers of stiffer material like a thick paper or thin card board.
Thanks for posting this. I would have never starting printing without this video. I really appreciate it :)
Brian Kaul Did you get gloss inkaid?
How exactly do you get the solution to dry smoothly on the card? I mix the Glass and Tile with the Digital Ground for Non-Porous Surfaces (The regular Clear Gloss doesnt mix with the Glass and Tile stuff) and it dries with pores in the surface
Where do I get the template for the card border?
Let me ask a few questions... you apply the first two items in order for the collor of the inkjet to stick?.. so does that mean that the printed out card is already shiny? and then you put a finish coat so that the color doesn't go off, if it's touched and at the same tame make a glossy surface for the parts you want to make it shine through? Did i get that right?
The end result is amazing btw!
For those having trouble with acetone, the best cards that i have found are the theros block lands and the m10-m13 lands.
Commander legends, amonkhet, theros beyond death, dragons maze, dragons of tarkir, ikoria, jumpstart, throne of eldrain and m19 all work amazingly
If for some reason you can’t find those, m20, m21, and modern horizons 1 all /work/ but they take a lot more effort (all of that after trying 25 sets)
They stopped making inkaid gloss is there anything else that could be used?
What resolution for the pixels do you use
When using the Clear ink aid, is the process the same as when using the Digital Ground?
Just a question what can we use instead of digital ground I can’t find any and dint know what to substitute it for
how thick of an application are you doing with the glass and tile medium/digital ground? it's really thick to begin with. found it to be difficult applying a thin coat
yo man, this looks amazing. which printer did you use?
for those who are curious if the inkaid is actually necessary, i did a trial to see what would happen if you print on the card as is and simply put the ink does not stay on the foil, i was able to wipe off the ink with toilet paper and without putting any pressure either, it just came off, you absolutely need an inkjet medium.
Any suggestions for a replacement for gold and digital ground?
wow i wish wizards made cards that look like that, they look better than normal ones
im not collecting.. but didn't took me long to realize that wotch are greedy cheapskates compared to other cards...
the artists themselves and their pieces are on and off... but production quality is quite low... how hard is it to design a good readable card haha... for wotc, it seems like rocket science...
Hi would like to ask if there's any other replacement for inkAID
Clear Gloss Precoat. It's not availble where i live. T.T
did you ever find an alternative?
@@AeonExplorer2024 still searching...
@@simonvega7640 I kinda gave up on this for a while, then forgot about it, since it was winter and the stuff wouldnt be available to ship to canada.....but yeah, eventually ill get around to it, saw your other post you made earlier today, thanks for the info.
does it damage your printer if you put these liquid on these cards?
I think I caught this video just in time. I'm in Canada and ordering Inkaid online is like $50 a bottle.
Went to the local art store and they had a bottle on clearance cause it was discontinued
Hey! I'm trying to make a set of power nine (with art found online or some other altered art that doesn't look like the originals) and I was wondering if you knew someone I could commission to make them for me? It's for a cube and would never see the light of day beyond his home. Let me know! Thank you!
Superb!
Aside from InkAid, are there any other brands out there that do the same thing? It seems to be impossible to find or even order online here in Canada.
This is so cool! any reason you are using Glossy InkAid or Golden Digital Ground Clear on top of FolkArt Glass & Tile Medium? because i've read description is to prepare the surface to receive the ink better.
im thinking to skip the inkaid because it is very hard to find in my country.
Good stuff!!
InkAid primes surfaces for inkjet prints, FolkArt primes a smooth surface. Together they make a compound that bonds to the foil, and then bonds ink to itself (since foil and ink don't bond with eachother very strongly). You'll need to find substitutes that do the same thing as they do. If you don't, your prints will bleed and rub off a lot more easily.
If you can't use varnish/water to remove the ink and reveal foil, you may be able to use highly diluted acetone and/or alcohol. Whenever you substitute, you'll need to do a few material tests to see if it works. It's very likely that InkAid + FolkArt are both soluble in water, while most other stuff isn't (which is why I suggest alcohol or acetone since they're easy to get and tend to work on non-water-soluble stuff).
Once you've got the card in the state you would like, you'll need to apply varnish or clearcoat to protect it from solvents.
Where do I get clear inkaide?
quick question. how do you put the ink on the card, do you put your card in the printer
Started trying this method. I'm failing at step 1. The acetone is easily removing the white ink but is NOT removing the darker ink from my cards. And as I keep rubbing, the foil treatment itself is disappearing. Not sure if Ultimate Masters foils are ultra-resilient to acetone, or if I'm using some bunk acetone.
UPDATE: Turns out the problem is with Ultimate Masters foils. Tried with an M13 foil and it came off like a t-shirt on a hot day.
Hey, did u managed it? Made some proxies with this method? Cause i'm trying to find alternative products since many of those aren't available in my country OR at least i can't find alternatives.
@@simonvega7640 yeah I have made dozens of them now. Importing InkAid into Canada was expensive, though. I've posted my results on my IG: @supertek
@@curtist6022 Thanks for your answer. Well from US to Canada is ofc not that hard, but to find the same stuff here in europe without knowing what it really does is kinda hard. I don't use instagram and i boycott it whenever i can so no chance for me to take a look, but thanks anyway.

Do you have an alternative to FolkArt glass and tile? They seem to be sold out everywhere
@@dodgersvega I am not aware of any other options, although there must be some out there. Hopefully they'll come back in stock on Amazon again soon. In the meantime maybe check out your local craft shops for it?
What program do you use for the border/art?
How do you find proxy’s like this for some cards
Can you print multiple proxies at once (I would say you could probably get a solid 6 at least.)
I have issues finding digital ground. InkAID isn't available here in Germany. Do you perchance know if Golden Absorbent Ground also works?
Thank you.
I'm trying this myself, but the medium+inkaid doesn't give me nearly as opaque a look as in the video. how many applications should I use?
would it be possible to shorten the process by using a photo transfer method?
How do you manage to apply the ground/folkart mix so smoothly? I always end up with an uneven coat with lots of brush strokes, doesn't matter what brush I use
They might sell it thicker than it used to be so you might need to dilute it.
Both Digital Ground and InkAid seem to be impossible to get here in Canada; would there happen to be another product that does the same thing?
I actually ordered the InkAid to Canada and the shipping was about 150% of the cost of the item, but I pulled the trigger on it anyway
Did you find an alternative product available to ship in Canada? Thanks
@@JimmyJames-om2uw no I ate the shipping costs and bought a big jar of InkAid from the states
@@JimmyJames-om2uw sadly not, I ordered it directly from their website. cost about 60 bucks after all was set an done for a pint.
Is your printer front loading and output? Have you ever had a card get stuck printing or does the tape hold really well
Can't find the digital ground or Clear InkAid in Canada :( any leads?
and what printer setting do you use
thanks for the video!!!
How do you get the image to be layers? When i pull these up in GIMP they are just 1 layer
Do you sell them if so how much
does this work with any inkjet or does it have to be, or should it be the same one you used. I don't see this working on my printer without some kind of paper jam.
ok so just to verify the gloss varnish is what you used on the entire background?
what kind of printer do you use? and what settings of the Printer (DPI, high quality, normal paper or something else) thank you
Could you post a link to your carrier sheet template?
Any alternatives for "FolkArt Glass & Tile Medium"?
Seems to be out of stock everywhere.
Thanks for the awesome guide :)
I'm also looking for any alternative, have you find out one that works? Seems like FolkArt is discontinued months ago due to covid and i can't find it :(
@@brandongutierrez8643 did youfind a replacement?
does anyone have a link to a printable card border for the carrier?
This probably won't be answered but which version of the InkAid would you recommend using?
How did you get it so that they image, sorry I don't play Magic, the lady on the card was not holo but the rest is? I'm trying to make Pokemon cards with this video.
This comment is pretty late, but he only used varnish on the background.
Would you make and ship a proxy if I paid you?
Is there a place i can get the templates
when ever i do this I getting stuff on the back of the card. Any tips on fixing that ?
Is there a cheaper solution than the inkaid?
my printer bends the paper when printing, will this method still work or would you not recommend it to me?
JEDUARD yes just make sure u tape the card well to the paper...
Mum: "What you cooking honey?"
Me: *"Just my magic card"*
It's not just ledgendary, but also Wizzard. Possibly for your next cards. Also, nice results!
Curious, I was trying to take the ink off of a card with Acetone and it was taking a very long time. So I grabbed some lacquer thinner and used that instead and it worked way faster. Is there a difference between these two?
Thanks dude I'm going to try that next time :D
Maybe your acetone contained much more alcohol, that's why it takes a vary long time on defoiling process.
Anyone know alternate products to use? Seems like all the listed products are unavailable.
I've read that glazing medium is a replacement for the glass and tile medium. Clear gloss ink aid can be used for the Digital Ground
I'm going to ask here again, the proxies do not require inner sleeves to be used, correct? While handling the card it seemed very nice and it's just the biggest issue for me
Also I did not expect for so many materials to be used. Looks amazing!
Btw, do any of these videos recommend printer settings?
it varies from printer to printer. My printer at work does fine with regular paper settings but one at home functions better with photo settings. Have to do some trial and error.
Great tutorial. Is the template available anywhere?
En Mexico, como consigo los materiales?
Folk art doesn't ship to Canada I guess, is there a substitute?
Sooo do you Sell decks in this matter?
Hey I hope you can respond what inkaid clear gloss should I use 1 2 or semi?
inkaid1.com/collections/inkaid-coatings/products/inkaid-clear-gloss-precoat this is what I use. Hope it helps.
What setting do you have agter you click print
I was wondering if you can do some custom cards I can pay you?
Any chance for an laser printer solution?
My issue is my image comes out too transparent I guess you would say. It looks great color and sharpness wise in certain lighting, but otherwise the image is rather dark and hard to see. I printed to regular paper and it looks fine. I had the same issue when I was trying to print on transparency paper before I tried this. Unless I had it on a white background it was hard to see. Yours looks like it might as well have been printed on white paper even though it's printed to the foil blank.
Is this the kind of printer that is used to professionally create such cards?
Would this method work on other cards as well? Ex: pokemon?
