Richard, I see you do SO MANY FLAT TAPPET HYDRAULIC CAM SWAPS, but with all these failures happening these days, could you PLEASE do a video on the failures in general, if and how many failures you’ve had, HOW you do your break up and, and what products you’ve been using that have not failed you! PLEASE!! There’s a HUGE group of us following you, and this is critical info for us hobby/ garage guys right now!!!
Thank you! Love ALL YOUR VIDS!!!!
You’re a treasure chest of useful info to all of us!!!!!
Sold. Bought the vortec heads and had slight modifications done for 550 cam. Got better springs and valve train, 1500$ for 110 hp gain on my truck was well worth it
Everyone freaks out about the $1,500. If anyone can show me where they can get 100hp for less I'm all ears LOL good buy!
Im new to cams and stuff what cam did you use
You can do it for way cheaper lol
@@infamousgarage4900 whats the cheaper secret I'm trying to find out.
@@LBWilliams. you can't,,, this is the best mods for that engine.
That's a great camshaft, good lift, not to long on duration to preserve tourqe. Vortec heads liked it.
Man I love these videos
Thanks for the info I will be using this in a future build
Deck the block, deck the heads, flat top pistons, and MLS head gasket will give you crazy compression which means more power and you can mess with timing as well as improve efficiency.
I'm building this exact set up as we speak cant wait
Don’t forget to get the heads checked! I went through 3 pairs of heads at the junkyard trying to find a set that weren’t cracked 🤬 bought a set, had them checked-cracked, exchanged, repeat 2 more time 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
@@orangetruckman Figure the money you will put into a set of used, possibley cracked heads, then swapping multiple times, as you did, just go for a simple set of aftermarket heads that are similar to vortecs that wont break the bank with absolutely no worries and it will last you for years to come. Done
I did almost the exact same modifications to my 1995 Mercruiser 350 and got nearly identical numbers of 353 and 397 on the dyno back in 2008. Still running strong.
Can you provide a link to the parts thanks
What heads were on the mercury before vortec.
1995 mercury's came with vortecs@@geoffernie
This is the exact setup I'm.building now. I have a sbc 350 from a 69 camaro SS as.my foundation. It's gonna make my.86 cutlass supreme run great.
I'm not very car savvy but this is my plan too. My dad told me I can use a 350 Chevy 4 bolt main he is giving me then I have a vortec motor he says using the heads off it will be really nice. Still would like to find more I can get. I'll daily this motor when it's done but I want it to romp lol
Sounds like you both are going to end up with fun builds! If you have questions about valvetrain parts and setup, feel free to give us a call at 800-999-0853!
@@Compcams1976 what car set up was used for this application?

Man this guy is wiz! Wow who woulda thought
Wow I am so impressed
I would like to know if you had to switch out the push rods. I have a 97 or 99 350 vortec that I am tinkering with in the garage. Orginally was gonna go all out and 383 it, but instead taking the cheaper route with just upgrading cam. Saw this vid and considered doing the cheap route. Any other things to consider while going through the motor? Any thoughts on what I can do to the bottom end other than rings and bearings?
Heres a super dirt cheap power combo im thinking of doing to my daily driver (77 impala) its got the 350 and its all stock at the moment with 76cc heads etc. i can get vortec heads from my local junkyard for $50 and a quadrajet spreadbore dual plane intake off amazon for 220 and i found a set of headers on kijiji for 150. Gonna slap it all together this summer when im able to drive my camaro for a bit. Should be around 300-320hp for $500-$600 all said and done including the cost of gaskets etc. i’d be reusing my qjet and stock cam, accessories, distributor etc so only around 500-600 to almost double the power. Not bad at all.
The perfect daily driver
Your website recommends 26981-16 / 981-16 valve springs. Did this change after the video was made? Thanks
Can I get a part number on these items..cam ,springs, lifters ?thanks ..👊
How about a similar video on the 454?
I wonder what the peak torque number was at what RPM on the stock crate engine. Torque was falling off at the begining of the graph (360 lb/ft @ 3200RPM)
I want to do the same setup but with xe262/270. Do you now if can i run stock convert and stock rockers wit xe262 on vortec heads. Thanks alot 👍
Can I put these vortec heads on a 1993 sbc 350 truck engine, seeing it's not actually a gen 2 motor? I pulled it out of my '93 Chevy G20 van and want to put it to use in my 1961 Chevy Bel Air. If so, can I use comp cams XM270H cam in it and do i need to change out the pushrods? I'm going with the Edelbrock 600cfm carb 4 barrel. I already know i need to change the intake over. Any help would be well appreciated, thank you.
Need a little help my friend, We have a 010 350sbc that had 305 heads, we took those off and are adding Vortec heads, What push rods and lifters will we need, Thank you
Will a top end kit with cam work on a 91 "tbi" chevy block? Are the 70s, TBI's, and LS 350 blocks the same?
So I bought a set of moca vortec heads from amazon and look great but I sure would like video if that is possible
I have a chevy 5.7 engine bore over 40 with flat top pistons but I need to know what will be the best size cam to go with but ima also buy votec heads for it to so if you can please help me out with this engine
I have a 76 SBC 350 and want to add vortec heads. I found online that the 98-02 vortec heads have a different bolt angle. “The regular 350 head utilizes a 90 degree intake bolt angle while the Vortec makes do with a 72 degree bolt angle.”
That's right. You will have to get a vortec intake.
hey richard how much lift can i go before i have to modify the valve guides
Good Ole Vortec heads are like LT1 heads just without the reverse coolant ports.
What was the compression ratio with the vortecs?
Can you tell please tell me what cast number you had for the heads that you used?
Only issue is I have this combo. You have to have additional machine work done to vortec heads to run that camshaft. If you use oem style. The rocker arms won’t clear the pedestal. Comp cams sells a tool to cut them down. And I heard they make or are making a spring that will allow the clearance needed.
the springs in the video are the ones that allow the clearance
So a buddy of mine got some brownfield heads I never hear of them before and can’t find any flow numbers anyway you can help or point me in the right direction
I don't know if this comment will be read but is there anyway possible to do a vortec head shootout the 062 vs the 906 and maybe add the 5.0 L30 vortec heads the 520's I know that they're great heads on a 305 I run high 13's in a 305 trans am with a 305 with a cam and L30 heads with a stealth ram but I'm building a 396 stroker and wanna know which is best for a real application
Can I use a stock non vortec cam with a stock vortec head? I'd like to stay out of the timing chain cover and the oil pan if I can get away with it. Not looking for power just reliability. Daily driving an 85 Suburban, 8 lug.
wondering if you had to do any machining at the valve spring seat as the bigger cam will travel farther and may not have enough movement and cause valve keeper to hit the valve seal
No machining necessary with beehive springs and .050 offset keepers along with the appropriate retainers.
Hey everyone I have a 350 Chevy and I’m wanting some vortex heads, but I don’t know what to get can any vortec heads fit and cam??
Love the video! What will be the outcome with Vortec Bowtie heads, ported machined aftermarket valves lifters and a Edelbrock air gap Vortec intake and 2" spacer. 650 carb, would we break 400 hp on a steel head? Or would port match come into play matching heads to intake?
How would the Dyno numbers differ?
quite easy depending on the cam
What is the cast numbers for the heads that you used
Just picked up a truck vortec 350 for my vlog project, prob should include a recommended roller cam as well.
If you call our tech help line or fill out the cam recommendation form, we can help you pick the right cam for your setup and goals!
@DrgnFlys Yah I been keeping an eye out for a take-out cam like the LT hot cam or w/e, my project will be more of a mild budget build so we'll see what I find, long as it fits the build or I'll just keep the stock cam. WTG youtube on notifications 2weeks later on reply LOL
@@Compcams1976 Thx I actually can pick my own cam , I just noticed you might want to add the roller info to your comment/descriptions since it was mentioned in the vid is all.
If your going with a bigger cam on those 906 heads you may want to remove the press in studs and go in with screw in studs... Maybe look at the valve guides to as well.. listen to my 93 c1500 97 vortec engine swap.. complete engine rebuild with lots of goodies inside
@@heavychevy2289 I agree Just did the studs in my recent video czcams.com/video/eZlhl9kzZXM/video.html
All i have to do is add behive springs and i can go 480 lift?
Can you run 87 octane with this combo
I have a 3rd gen Camaro with crate L31 vortec will this cam setup work with my engine?
I thinks he’s trying to be a magician w them hands.
I’m doing this near exact upgrade except I’m going with a slightly larger Lunati cam. Also my mechanic is recommending a set of roller rockers. What would you think the rockers would be worth in hp gain?
1.6
When I tryed to put this Xm270h cam with those lifter and upgraded springs in my 1998 vortec motor and the timing chain gear for the 1998 cam gear has a different bolt pattern so what should I do now
if u used a roller cam get a chain for a hyd roller cam. if its not a roller cam use a standard chain. if your engine uses the cam stop plate to retain the camshaf it takes the cam chain with the smaller bolt pattern.
What push rods ?
Did you have to get screw in studs for the heads with them springs or the stock heads work with them springs meaning the pressed in rocker studs..?thanks
What carb setup?
I’d love to see what kind of horsepower you could get by adding a turbo to this combo.
That would depend on what size of turbo and the boost you run it.
Turbo is a pain with all the plumbing, and v8 ci like two to make enough boost without lag,, Maxson supercharger for boost,
So my 350 motor from 96 z71 is a good start correct
When you installed the springs, did you have to cut some of the seats or shim the springs for proper tension or anything like that?
I did not on mine, I'm using the 097 cam at .480 lift .222 duration @50, so no cutting needed. Bee hive springs are the best. Thanks
Are speedmaster products any good?
My left ear enjoyed this video so much..... of course the mic is on his left shoulder. o_0
What about 96. Vortec build. With the fuel injection set up.
Does it have a good sound

When you say late model vortex truck motor, what years are you taking about. I am planning to replace an aging 305 in my 81 sierra pu
I believe 96-02
@COMP cams , do i need something else ? or just with those upgrades is enough? vortec heads , cams , intake , springs, electric water pump and that`s it? what about lifters , valves and time gears ?? best regards from mexico !
Don't you have to do some head work to use a bigger camshaft on vortec heads?
Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade my 350 OMC boat marine engine and I'm very interested in what happends between 1000rp and 5000rpm. At least, before reaching 5000rpm, the boat has to plane and it needs some torque for that!
Where can I find these kind of information, specific for marine application?
Thanks,
Stay away from a radical cam with a choppy idle - you're exiting into a wet "log" exhaust which works completely different than a header exhaust, too big a cam will also kill your fuel economy, which is already 3 MPG.
I have a 96 350 vortex on an engine stand in my garage, can I just simply put a flat tappet cam in it in place of the roller cam? Obviously I would have to use different lifters as well but is it just as simple as that? Will it work with the cam bearings?
Keep the same came in it
What is the part number for the intake manifold?
speedmaster #1-147-007. about $185 bucks at Jegs!
Did these vortec heads need to have the guides cut?????
@comp cam I have a vortec out of a 2000 Cadillac Escalade what’s need to do this job
Since it’s a roller block it would be smart to use a roller cam instead of flat tappet. Something like a gm lt4 hot cam or comp 270 hr should give you around 400 hp. Roller cams use stiffer springs and a different distributor gear. Also most of the later blocks didn’t have provisions for a mechanical fuel pump and some roller cams don’t have the lobe to run one. If either of those is the case you’ll need to run an electric one.
Do you need to upgrade valve springs for the Comp Cam XM270H camshaft?
I have heard yes and no depends who u talk to he only said springs upgrade
Part list ??!
I thought the stock Vortec heads would only allow for ~.460 lift unless you grind the valve guides?
With the spring kit mentioned in the video (or the 26918-16 spring, 787-16 retainer, and 648-16 lock) you can get up to about .520 lift before needing to do any head work!
COMP Cams good to know as I’m preparing to run a set of vortecs on my next sbc build!
COMP Cams what springs did you use to break the cam in? Because I feel those are too high of pressure for break in.
@@kashbrown4649 they are not to much, more then stock. the conical shape is a great advantage, and the lift clearance
@@Compcams1976 can the .520 lift be achieved with factory 1.5 rockers?
My bucket truck ( 2000 gmc 3500) has the vortec motor stock , 113,000 miles on it , nothing wrong with the motor , but with the lift on it I'm way underpowered , I want a motor already done set up like that fresh , I do alot of idling to run the boom so I'm wondering about oil pump and oil getting to everything at long idles , already upgraded the radiator and added dual fans and bigger tranny cooler..can I build a motor for idling ? Longevity , fuel mileage ? Just kidding on fuel mileage , im getting a little over 3 mpg now , fuel mileage is out the window ..87 octane pump fuel is a must though ..I got a 1986 bucket truck that likes high octane fuel , we don't take that one on jobs no more , big block got a little to wild , it's just a toy now , that's why I got the 2000 ..
When putting vortec heads on a old 350 do u use a regular 350 head gasket or is there a different design? Im not asking about thickness just design of gasket itself
Regular gaskets, might as well go thinner and pick up some compression also
@@dianathompson7597 would steel shim gaskets be the ones I would use with the same stock 70-80’s dished pistons? I’m guessing since they’re factory dished- like he showed in his engine, that the steel shim would probably be better for the squish than a stock gasket?
Thank you in advance!!
How much is a crate motor 350?
Did you dyno the motor before the mods or is 190 just what was advertised?
Exactly...those 190hp crate engines actually come with about 230/240hp !
Can I run just the vortec heads without a cam upgrade? On a stock 190 hp crate motor
You can
hello! everyone can someone tell me what kind of vortec heads i could used I have an 84 corvette crossfire Im switching to carb buttom end Im not touching just the top thank you
No problem. 84 Vette had TBI with dished pistons. They will help increase your C/R and if you go with a .015 shim gasket even better. You can buy the new Iron "Vortec" that are upgraded versions with thicker iron and clearance guide bosses and screw in studs. Or Jegs have a version in aluminum for just over 500 each.
One issue, Rich: You said, go to the boneyard, get a Vortec 350, and add this cam, lifters, and springs. But the stock Vortec has a roller, doesn't it? Are you advocating trading a hydraulic roller for a hydraulic flat tappet?
He said get the vortec engine and add the springs and induction system
What can I do to get more power out of my 1979 Buick LeSabre I have a 307 motor with bigger carburetor and 350 heads and 350 headers????
If you haven't seen thunderhead284(?) he has a couple videos on carburetors that may help.
Would it be possible to add Vortec heads off of a 1990s vortec 350, into a 1970s 350 engine
Yes it is
What year trucks I can search for those vortec heads??
1996 thru around 2002.... best Old Vortec heads are the #906 and the #062,
I just picked up a pair of 062 heads for $100.00 of of Craigslist last weekend....they were dirty but I was cleaning them up today....got the Valves out and these heads look Awesome ! Super Deal !
He forgot to mention that if u do get a vortec motor ur gana need longer push rods with this cam setup do to different lifter lengths.roller cam got longer lifters so they require shorter push rods as for the flat tap cam has shorter lifters and require longer push rods ..I'm going threw it as if now ..c what happens 🤞
What ratio rocker arms did you use? Were they the stock 1.5 or 1.6 aftermarket ones?
Looked stock to me. Vortecs are lift limited, ya know. So 1.6s would cause the retainer to hit the guide.
@@donellmuniz590 not with those springs
@@jjmccloud Yeah, you're right. I recently learned about the "blue" LS springs.
Will running exhaust manifolds rather than headers hurt the power much ?
On the stock cam I say no. With a cam you're leaving a lotta torque on the table. You just got to decide whether 25 ft lb is worth the headache of fitting those bastards.
What kind of dyno numbers would this combo make with a stroker 383 ? Also is just a hydraulic cam enough, wouldn't a roller hydraulic be better? I know more costly though!
I bet 460 torque
@@dianathompson7597 Do you like this combo better than a 383 stroker? I'm just about ready to buy a rotating assembly, I was leaning towards a 383 but not really sure?
Sad that this video did not include a dynamic pull.
Hey, you look familiar! Didn't you used to sell household cleaning product?
Don’t be dissing bald dyno Jesus
Nah, THAT bald guy was TALL. 🤣
Dumb question but, Do you have to run 91 octane or higher for this set up?
Yes
So whould I need to upgrade my transmission for the power it makes if I did this to my stock 350?
If your nice to it probably not.
the 1995-2000 vortech motors had 323hp and 444torq from factory so you can make way more power with the right can swap
That's VERY generous numbers.... Sure you aren't thinking of the 8.1's?
@@Compcams1976 after i wrote it i realized that that is the 383 replacement engine from gm. stock is 250hp 330torq. for 1995-2000
@CC Ryder if you read you seed i corrected it to 330 the 444 was the 383 factory upgrade for gm
so no other head work was needed just change out the valve springs?
Correct. But use the correct rockers and push rods for the Vortec heads. There are limitations to the lift these heads can support due to the pressed in studs. You can ask the cam company for the right combo.
The retainer in the spring kit they used is thinner and allows more room, otherwise the retainer would hit the valve guide.
do we need to change the pushrods?
Same question
did you use a 5.7l vortec or a 5.3l vortec for the cylinder heads?
Hes using 5.7l L31 heads. Not the 5.3l LS heads
Can I just use the 5.7 vortec that’s in my truck and add the cam and springs?
Yes you should be able too
Not without swapping the computer, or change it to carburator.
Do you have to change the push rods
What compression did the 350 have with the 882s and then what did it have after the vortecs what gasket thickness did u guys use
I had this same engine scenario. I did replace pistons with flat tops 4V relief type however. CC's are 64 in the vortecs vs 76. The Crate 190hp were horrible with my reading from an Old Hot Rod crate build thread. It had like 7.6:1 with their calculations. So I would go with a .015 Shim gasket with the Vortecs and you might be around 9:1? Mine is at 10.1 or so.
@@jauquearnoldi1059 thank you!!! That’s exactly the info I was looking for!!!! My engine is a late 70’s-early 80’s dished pistons like Richards engine had, and was trying to find out if I could/ should run a steel shim gasket- and not fug up the squish, or have too much compression for pump gas! I’m building the same thing for my mud bigger Jeep, with the exception of a Elgine 920-p 288 cam (.480 .480 lift 233/ 233 @.050, 108 cl). THANK YOU FOR THIS INFO!!!!

Hey how you doing I was wondering if theres a superchip that can give me more HP and Torque for the Vortec 5700 L31 , mine is a 1999 year
Superchip?
@@killercodplays yeah like if there's a chip that I could install to make my engine better with HP and or better MPG
Senpai Mike 901 I mean you can but they really do t do that much unless you have a intake, exhaust, etc
No, there isnt for that motor. And all those "chips" do(the real ones not $50 or $100 ebay ones) is change the tune. A tune on a bone stock vortec l31 is going to be worth very minimal gains in comparison to what a cam & springs would do, like in this video.
@@darrylbrown4790 I see thanks for the advise!!!
Has anyone actually duplicated these numbers with proof? And at what Initial Spark Advance & or Maximum Setting?
How about if you just add cam will I need to change something else for Sierra
You will need valve springs at a minimum with any cam in a 350.
@@Compcams1976 thank you
Will a 600 cfm carb work with this build
Yes
wonder how this would compare to the XE274H-10 with the same vortec heads ?
If you search this build by Hot Rod mag, theirs made 394 HP dirt cheap, also with a flat tappet cam. You could probably make more with the original Vortec motor because it's already set up for a roller cam.
What Intake manifold did you use?
Think he said Speedmaster, looks like their version of an Edelbrock air gap.
I compared that picture with one of the ones that Jegs sells for speedmaster. A midrise intake model number 746-1-147-010 for about $194.00.
What can I expect from Vortec Cylinder heads gas flowed and a 204/214 camshaft??
A pure street motor that does fine up to just over 5,000 rpm - which is what the vortecs are good at anyway. If you plan on spinning past 6k rpm, that's different cam/heads.
@@flinch622 What about horsepower? How much horsepower and torque can one expect from this combination you think?
@@kobuskock6688 310 HP, but it will still be at low rpm , good street motor, improve exhaust will help
It appears there was not much change on the lower end. Meaning this mod would not make much sense for a truck that spends most of its life below 3,000 rpm. I would love to see a video on how to improve low end torque.
Less duration on the cam,
I put 305 heads on a 350 5.7 motor and the heads dont match the tb intake that was on it t
