Gamo Swarm, Crosman, and Umarex Reviews & Comparisons

  • Gamo and Crosman are real competitors, when it comes to gaining the greatest market share in the U.S. Unfortunately, I did not have the Crosman Multi-Fire for this review… versus a Crosman Trail break barrel with a wood stock. Perhaps in the months ahead, I can add that multi-shot rifle to the review. Nonetheless, the Trail has the same nitro piston and 20-inch barrel as the Crosman Multi-Fire. I also included an entry level PCP in this comparison for those who might be on the edge of moving into PCP air rifles. #gamo #crosman #airrifles

      Good to hear from you again Anonymous ... the deal breaker list in my video reflected my own breaker list. Within minutes of launching it ... I received comments of other deal breakers of my viewers ... the first was that a number of air guns don't permit changing the bolt action over for use by a south paw ... which is obviously a big deal breaker for them ... so that video list of about 20 items has been expanded to about 40 ... and we have printed up the latter to be included for free in every T-Shirt or Cap order that will begin in about 2 weeks... I will likely provide another video within a year that may have as many as 50 deal breakers... Dr. Russ

    Doctors Russ and Paula: Just found this great production this evening! You folks make a wonderful team and production! Thank you for upping this airgunner's airgun IQ at least a few points or more for every episode I watch! I doubt, however, that I'll ever catch up to you two! For example, reversing the pellet-shaped logo and slogan "Silent Sharp Shooter" on the front and back of the cap and vice versa on the t-shirt was marketing genius as was the choice of army green for color!

    Hello there Dr Russ , an excellent video again . Your test shows that too much power in Springer isnt helpful, accuracy does suffer unfortunately. I like to run my precharged 22's at around 900fps. A 26 grain pellet at that speed gives me excellent accuracy and knockdown power out to 75 metres if needed. I take the majority of my shots at 50 metres .
    I do like the phonebook test. 👍🏼👏🙂 . It does exactly what it needs to with clear results. Keep up the great work . The new logo, hats and t shirts look great. Well done. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸

      Ripper ... it is good to hear from you .... I've been criticized on this test 4 or 5 times, but I stand by this phone book test ... because it provides an accurate method of measuring ... and paper comes from wood... which can be in consistent with various knot holes, cracks, etc. My guess is that if this test doesn't prove that your particular air gun has the greatest penetration, then you criticize the method of the test. Just my guess. Dr. Russ

    Wonderful data analysis, thank you as always. Curious to see differences in penetration depths from two guns shooting at approximately the same fps. How do we interpret that result? As a newbie to PCPs, ballistics has become a new learning objective. Would you have any guidance about shooting at extreme angle (up or down)? Thinking of squirrels high in trees well above 45degrees.

    • @drsrussandpaula
      @drsrussandpaula  Před 2 lety +5

      Good to hear from you Douglas .... My experience with shooting squirrels up into trees or deer down below you is that a range finder calculation would be wrong ... since it would indicate direct distance to the target.... the fact is that pellet or slug drop equates to linear gravity pull.... and so if a squirrel is 30 yards away and up ... you really need to discover the linear distance that gravity is pulling the pellet down... this could be determined if you were on the ground ... use the range from you to the base of the tree ... and not the high branches above.... in time ... and after a 1000 rounds ... you wont need a range finder and will be able to judge the distance with your eye sight.... • @SavageAirguns
    @SavageAirguns Před 2 lety +9

    Only thing I will say, is every gun likes different style/brand of pellets. So some of the wider spreads on guns may be able to be mitigated with finding a pellet that the gun "likes". That can be true with max spread too to some extent. Also, pellet can vary slightly in weight even coming from the same tin. So without weighing the pellets or taking more shots, it is likely you may have more spread and flyers.
    To make this as accurate as possible when comparing guns. Use 5 shot groups, multiple types of pellets, and weigh the pellets your going to shoot so you know there is no variation.
    Great video as always.

    • @drsrussandpaula
      @drsrussandpaula  Před 2 lety +7

      Good to hear from you Anonymous ... Yes I don't pretend to duplicate a completely thorough and exact comparison.... I am fighting several issues when producing a video.... viewers often don't even watch longer videos ... especially if they go over 27 minutes .... and secondly if you have watched my two videos on pellets ... you will probably see that I have over hundreds of different pellet and slug tins.... and I am fully aware of different pellets ... with different weights... and diameters ... can do better... and while I didn't show 5 shot groups ... or different pellets in this video ... trust that I shoot thousands of pellets a week and my personal experience isnt much difference than the comparisons found in this video. Heavy JSB's are used in most videos and work the best ... particularly in break barrels ... I also add a thick lube to them ... which often makes up any diameter difference for velocity purposes.... again it is good to hear from you ... please stay in touch... Dr Russ

  • @jbhk7977
    @jbhk7977 Před 2 lety +7

    When you truly want to measure penetration, you have to use ballistics gel because this allows you to dump all the energy during the forming of the cavity (if this makes any sense) The gel will allow the pellet cavity to bulge during penetration while the pellet passes/tumbles/expands. it will allow the rifling of the barrel to do it's "trick". These are very important ingredients we have to take into account when we talk about penetration. When you use a phone book, you only dump all energy at once but it doesn't tell you much. I would love to see a comparison between your telephone book results and ballistics gel and see if there is any coherence ;-)

    • @drsrussandpaula
      @drsrussandpaula  Před 2 lety +11

      JBHK ,,,, it is good to hear from you and thanks for sharing your experience. My own experience has not been as accurate with gel powder ... as it has been with one phone book. Gel is suppose to duplicate the consistency of meat ... without hitting bone. . .. and there are differences in gels ... they are hand made with different brands of gel and different amounts of water ... by different shooters ... and at different temperatures. Secondly, it is almost impossible to determine the difference of penetration difference while two ... let alone five different pellets are in a single block of gel.... while phone book pages make a more accurate method of determining pellet penetration... nonetheless, I have found different phone books ... stored in different locations (basement versus attic) perhaps made from a different paper mill ... can produce different results. I have also found that when winning comparisons are made showing a pellet rifle that is owned by a viewer ... are often better received than when a viewer owns the other air gun .... Bottom line is that I own and have paid personally for over 25 AIR GUNS and I am trying to provide as fair a comparison as possible for those who havent bought either air gun.... Please shay in touch JBHK....Dr Russ

    • @nsboost
      @nsboost Před 2 lety +1

      I think your taking this a bit far.. if both rifles are fired at the same phone books your getting a similar comparison.
      Your acting like one is shit at a completely different material than the last, like it is a unfair comparison.
      This is a even comparison, regardless of it being the comparison you desire.. it’s still fair.
      If your want it fired at the same ballistic gells or meat.. I invite you to pay for the meat or gel. The RETIRED Dr would be more than happy to do that for you. But if you are not willing to pay for what you demand, the. I don’t think you have any foot to stand on demanding anything.
      These tests are done for free for your consumption. He makes nothing off this. For you to demand he do something else without compensation is like demanding a contractor remodel your bathroom for free. It’s completely rediculous. You sound like an ass.

    Dr. Russ, what pellet was used in the tests? I have a Gamo maxxim gen 2 like yours. I have discovered after trying many different pellets and slugs that Zan .218 23gr slugs produce extremely tight groups at 25 yards in my gun.

      It is good to hear from you Dow Hurst .... the pellet used in all of these air rifles was the JSB Heavy ...which you can get at Pyramid Air ... buy 3 and get the 4th for free.... don't forget to consider spraying them with Bullet lube at gun stores ... or chain wax found at motorcycle stores ... which is a thick oil that clings to pellets or slugs... and seals up any air leakage around the pellet as it goes down the barrel... then store your Maxxim barrel down so that any possible oil will drain out the front of the barrel onto a rag ... versus back down the barrel and into any mechanism where it can cause trouble... Thanks Dr Russ , interesting study.
    The Gamo Whisper and Crosman Trail have velocity of 644 & 645 fps. I’m going to call that the same.
    The same pellets were used for the experiment.
    So same velocity, same pellet mass = same momentum when the pellet leaves the barrel.
    Why then the difference in penetration?
    The Crosman penetrated the phone book about 33% deeper than the Gamo, each with the same momentum.

    • @drsrussandpaula
      @drsrussandpaula  Před 2 lety +3

      Chuck ... it is good to hear from you ... and there are a number of air rifles that could help you ...and budget is important in giving you a good answer as well as availability in your area. Consider shooting only the heaviest of 177 pellets because speeds over 900 will not be accurate. Heavier pellets will keep your pellets closer to the sweet spot of 800 to 900 feet per second. Increasing your caliber size to 22 would be helpful to accuracy ... and don't believe that they make the noise or shoot a mile like 22 rim fire powder bullets do. Secondly, the length of the barrel is important to accuracy as well ... and try to get a barrel that is at least 19.5 inches long. Lastly, know that few if any come with a quality scope... so include in your budget a good scope made for air guns.... Consider a refurbished CP (Center Point) or Hatsan at Fieldsupply.com. Gamo and Crosman are pretty good with service ... so consider them in your selection process.... Your selection process will include Springers ... Break Barrels ... and PCP's. Springers especially, but Break Barrels too require that you shoot using the "Artillery Position"... so watch a few videos on the Artillery Position. PCP's require an air source from a hand pump to Scuba tanks to compressors ... and while you gain accuracy, particularly if those air guns include a regulator ... they add to the cost. Consider Umarex Gauntlet or Air Venturi Avenger as good entry level guns for this decision. Keep us in your loop of air gun experiences... Dr. Russ

    • @russjones6497
      @russjones6497 Před rokem +1

      gta1458 ... my choice of scopes has changed from year to year looking for the best scope for the money. Break Barrels require shorter scopes versus long and are useful ... particularly if you shoot at targets... In some cases, you might even prefer a red dot if you are a hunter because of the rapid movement destructive critters make ... both before and after the shot. Currently, I have found an excellent scope value at CVLife.com .... where they have several scopes including a shorter one with a laser and a red dot attached to the scope for about $100. If you put "Russ15" at the end of the order ... you get another 15% off of that price. Other shorter scopes ... all high quality ... cost about half of that. I believe I demonstrate those in several of my last videos... just click onto the small photo of me to access our channel of over 100 CZcams Videos.... and review the last few. I recommend that you consider going thru that library and watching two that have the word "Accuracy" in the name ... to truly maximize your ability to shoot small groups into the bullseye. Jerry ... it is good to hear from you ... be careful opening up any retail store ... since 90% never make it to the 10th year.... Often you delete your savings and capital inventoring the wrong inventory. Consider an internet based store first... which you are going to need with a retail store anyway. Your inventory should be based upon some research of friends, and public to see if they want your brand of products anyway. An internet firm is less costly to start. You can request any type of business from your local city clerk ... (name of your business) and the state for sales tax collection ... then begin to check the manufacturing brands you want ... they may tell you that they already have too many dealers in your area ... and if you are accepted, they will advise you of the size orders and the product that must be included in that order... which may or may not be the brand and product you learned that your local area was prepared to buy. Otherwise.... go slowly ... negotiate with any info you learn from key suppliers... ie ... you will not be including their springer rifles ... but you will meet their other requirements ... also check you competition... for example if they have a lot of feedback on brand A ...but not a lot of feed back on brand B.... lastly, and this is a catch 22 ... but you need the passion for air rifles to make it ... but you wont be able to shoot as much... once you open your business... Senator Joseph McCarthy ... good point ... especially on lower to mid priced air guns. This is due to barrel differences and poor manufacturing controls on the parts of lower and mid priced air guns. Much of this can be helped by shooting lubed and heavy pellets ... in an effort to to seal any air space down the barrel and to bring the velocity down to a sweet spot of 775 to 975 fps. Fortunately, I shoot hundreds if not thousands of pellets a week ( a thousand a week when I was in competition) and do my best to provide good, usable air gun info in our videos. Dr. Russ

    1. Three pellets are not enough to objectively estimate max. spread - at least, there should've been five. 2. Penetration test wasn't done properly, because different guns were shooting under different angles. This is very clearly shown by numbers of the pierced pages - no other reason for the guns with pretty much same velocities (Whisper/Maxim/Trail) to differ that much. This test should've been made from a distance of about one yard. And, by Jove, how could you forget to show us the PELLET?! At least, you should've reported it's weight...

      I totally agree with you , the guy is weak in knowledge, he keeps mentioning gamo having 20 inch barrel, where in reality gamo has 14.5 inch barrel length, the rest is plastic shroud

      @@paulkarkorian6377 I think he is referring to Crosman's model (the one with a wooden stock) since it's reminding him of the Benjamin he had had long time ago. He also says that "Gamo has a 20 inch model too" (but not specifically among those included in the tests). Problem is: he speaks a lot, jumping from one topic to another so, instead of being more streamlined and concise, he is a bit confusing... In another video - a comparison of different Swarm flavors - he talks about differences between models COMPLETELY FORGETTING to warn people of the fact that only "Fusion" is equipped with "open sights", which represents it's major (if not the only) difference to other Swarms...

      It is good to hear from you Tor Tojed and Paul Karkorian .... I am in N. Carolina now but will remeasure those Swarm air rifles when I get back in home ... to determine the exact length ... I was using the JSB Heavy in all of the air rifles in this test ... and if you see my two videos on pellets ... you will see that I have at least 50 different types of pellets ... and shoot over 500 rounds per week. We have learned that videos over 27 minutes are often not watched by viewers ... so we only used 3 shots ... however ... the tests reflected many many tests that were not in this video. My goal is to provide as fair a comparison air guns as possible... There are many other issues that can cause differences in penetration, but I don't believe a slightly different angle shooting into the same phone book would be a reason ... Algebra calculations show very tiny differences in this video ... For example, barrels and their crowns can and do slow pellets down... particularly if they are not leaded in evenly ..nonetheless... I attempted to show a fair comparison between these air rifles.... Dr. Russ

      Mr. Sinister ... it is good to hear from you ... even though we don't agree. After 77 CZcams Videos ... and age 76 ... lying isn't in my nature... Counting the pages in the phone book provides an exact penetration answer... which I did share ...however, my producer does cut almost half of each video taping ... because no one would watch if our videos were an hour long... so he cuts our videos to the point that 3384 people have watched this one as of this moment.. I trust him ...... Often, viewers get upset when a review doesn't show their air gun to be the best of them all ... sorry if that is what our review did for you .... perhaps you will be happier watching other videos that want to sell your particular gun to everyone...

      @@mr.sinister1279 Correct ... but viewers wouldn't trust the test if different pellets were used in different air guns ... Now here's what I'd like to see with that pcp. Take say about 150 shots and let's so what the velocity, Penetration and standard deviation is. Because it's nothing but a air tank with a barrel strapped to it hence making never consistent very long and completely reliant on a specific air compressor! F$%#ing pointless if you ask me! Now take 150 shots, hell make it 1500 with a break action and let's see how the compare!

      4 bears ... I think it might be easier since you feel very strong about the subject ... that you put together your own videos ... and if that doesn't have the number of subscribers that you want ... then I suggest that you put together a team of people who have read the over million viewer comments that you have received .... and who then want to help you plan your future videos.... keeping them as short as possible ... so that viewers will even want to see them ... Good luck ... Dr. Russ.
