Maybe they could test different hole sizes and shapes in the guitar body to "tune" it's tone. Those yin-yang shaped holes look pretty random, just for decoration, but maybe you could scientifically design hole shapes and size for tone, to compliment certain scales or keys. You could sell more guitars if people wanted to use different ones for different songs or music styles.
This whole message Steve was conveying is very powerful. At around 8:30 I started realizing that this isn't just about creativity on the guitar or music, but how to think about conducting yourself in life. It sucks not having this type of guidance from people when you're a child growing up, but at least this can be applied at whatever stage of live you find yourself.

This is exactly what i love about Steve Vai's interviews. It always goes beyond string gauges and picking excercises. There's always some much more profound stuff to be found. That is, if he's given the opportunity and time to talk about it.
This interview, once past the black Pia, is really as much about one's attitude towards life in general, as it's about music. And it's brilliant!
All of Steve's interviews are wonderful, a real gift. And how beautiful it is to know a little the person, the soul, the consciousness and their vision and perspective can be something that really helps to take the path of enthusiasm and the way of respecting oneself, respect the creative potential and really enjoy life and the now without projections in the future.

I have never been in love with his art (love a few tunes) BUT he is a stellar musician and even better human. He always makes it about the path of the person not about stuff or comparisons against some "ideal" we make up in our heads

so it's not just about your ability to envision, but also your willingness to put in the effort to follow through. these 2 tools combined will make anybody unstoppable. the more times you put the effort in, the less effort you'll have to expend thanks to experience.

very intelligent and sincere advice/philosophy on playing. also great to hear musicians being enamored with their peers in the business. everyone has something to offer at every level and for him to give insight on someone like Jack gives a clearer perspective on how we all contribute to music and how we hear it in our heads while creating those memorable moments

really enjoyed this video, thanks! Vai always has great life lessons and I always listen carefully. Fame chasing is usually never going to end well for most. I feel successful when I complete my musical ideas and get them out to the world and it's always nice if others think I play well.

As an aspiring guitarist when I was 15, he was magnetic to me and still is.
I don't play much now but I still follow his career. Just such a brilliant man.

If you woke up out of a forty year sleep and had no idea of who Steve Vai is but heard him speaking on visualization you would think he was a Professor of Philosophy at some Ivy League school.
Some of the best life lessons I've ever heard through the years have come from Steve Vai and it had absolutely nothing to do with music or the guitar.

Mr .Vai has always been a huge insparation to me..i dont play anything like him..but i love what he does. The way he composes a song is always unique. Thats what has kept him relevant for sooo long. Tons of guys have come and gone that can play thier asses off but the way Steve keeps writing new really interesting material is crazy. Just the coolest cat there is!!
This was great. The new guitar looks great. I totally agree with the description of how as a player that deveops a mental relationship with a guitar. The guitar might be and sound similar to many others, but when something clicks with that guitar there is something that the player develops that is unique to them. This is part of why i dislike reliced guitars, and only appreciate authentic wear, or wear you were responsible for.. I love the descriptions of Tom and Jack. I also got some inspiration for finding a creative solution by sticking with my vision - in regards to a my startup software company.

What that means?
Vai has such a unique style i would know his playing anywhere. He could play in a disco tune and i would know who it was.
I think that is real important to have that trademark style that is recognizable on anything you play.
The guy is definitely one of the legends on guitar.
The most valuable lesson I learned from Vai was that he will start an idea slowly and work up to speed. I always thought guys like him just ripped what they are thinking.
I get the visualizing thing. When I have a part that challenges me, I rehearse in my mind. Not just "seeing my self playing" in an abstract way, but actually thinking of every finger placement and picking action. In this way I can "rehearse" anytime, anywhere. I find walking my dog seems very conducive to this sort of "rehearsal". It sounds crazy, and it doesn't replace developing motor skills, but it really seems to help me move forward, much faster and much more accurately than just playing alone. And more often than not, it leads me towards a different approach than I would every have done by just playing. Because I'm free of all those automatic muscle memory patterns when I'm just thinking it through.
This is why I love Steve Vai...

A whole new respect for Steve. I just thought of him as a guitar shredder and he is very talented one but he is more then that. Surprised he likes Tom Waits but so cool that he does and I do as well. Very wise words that many ego centric musicians should head and those musicians that feel they can never quite get it should also listen closely to what Steve is saying. Loved it!
I've been telling my dad for years Jack is the greatest guitar player to have ever lived on the deepest level and he would always counter with the undeniable technical ability of Steve Vai. Jack does the soul of guitar better than anyone ever will, he even edges out hendrix in my opinion who is rightfully the poster child of perfection and feel.

Jack white uses an octave pedal and fuzz plus the usual make me sound good pedals(compression, delay, verb) I love how hated he is in Nashville. There’s nothing more fun that playing white stripes songs and getting sweaty af and having the sweat drip into your pickups for the extra tone. It’s great

I was so totally engrossed in what Steve Vai was saying. The fading in of the music at 18:15 was completely unnecessary and distracting, but thank you Premier Guitar for this mind-expanding video.
I'm a super literal and analytical person, and while I do think Steve comes off as a little bit 'hippy pretentious' at times, I do think he's really thought much of this stuff through to where it genuinely makes sense. He's a deeply creative person, perhaps moreso than most all the virtuosic talent out there, and much of what he says is a real psychological look into people's heads.

I have to wonder how Steve's hearing is these days. I'm sure that years of loud playing have taken their toll on his ears. Still, a magnificent human being though. My hat is off to the master and his new love! Can't wait for more of his magical music.
Thanks Jeremy. I can assure you my hearing is close to excellent. I've protected my ears through the years more than my genitals! And most men are pretty protective of those ;-). Oddly enough, with all the loud amps and concerts through the years, the only time I ever had any real ear problems was when I was 14. I used to go skeet shooting with a shotgun and one day I shot so many rounds I blew out my right ear from the bang. I lost 6db at 4k in my right ear that day and it never came back. I've had to learn how to mix music with this minor imbalance. But otherwise, it's even odd to me how good my ears are still. Thanks for asking. s

I dont necessarily agree with the last part. Its NOT going to just manifest into fruition. Almost everybody will need to spend time in the woodshed working and crafting their skills- and only then opportunities will arise that will deliver you to your destiny. Its not enough to just sit there and dream. Doesn't matter if its playing guitar, practicing law, practicing medicine, engineering etc... that skill will take years to develop. Dont forget to enjoy the journey.
