- We had the honour to check out Steve Vai's Live Guitar Rig together with him and his 2 great techs, Doug and Thomas, during their 2022 Inviolate European tour. The rig is a form of art in itself - The sound integrity and cable management - including the Hydra routing - is pretty impressive.

Thomas is a true gentleman, the way that he step back when Steve came. He is a humble and wise guy.
He just saw them filming and interviewing Thomas and came to explain things a bit by himself. How cool and humble is this man!!
You guys outdid yourselves. Insane video. Thank you Kris and all the guys working on this video!
Thank you so much! And of course thanks to Steve, Thomas and Doug for the awesome tour! What a day that was! 💛 //Kris
Besides being a phenomenal musician Steve is a lovely human being.
Just goes to show he has his ego in check, unlike a lot of filthy - Rich Rappers with more Bling than Fort Knox.
@@Rio-Jeos dont just bash rappers lol.. alot of musicians are full of themselves . You have people like taylor swift crying about climate change when she takes a private jet just to go on her daily commute while most people can walk that distance in about 15 mins. Those type of people are in ALL genres of music .
His name is all over this gear. That means he is advertising his brand and is basically being a salesman in this spot. He gets royalties from the sponsored gear that is sold and Thomann's is a big retailer. This is business for Vai, remember that.
@@m0rvidusm0rvidus18 Haha - great comment! Right on the mark!
@@m0rvidusm0rvidus18 He has always been an astute businessman. He refused to get ripped off by record companies in his younger days and was always on the case business wise regarding contracts and even with his guitars and tech. At his level why shouldn't he? There are enough tales of bands and artists being ripped off. Steve is one that refused to let them rule him. Good on him. Not only that, people want to know about his sh*t. Myself included. Does not mean I am gonna go and buy it LOL
Went to high school with Doug, glad to see him doing well on tour with Steve
He's starting to look like Steve
Is it just me or is Steve getting more Italian as he ages..? Such an amazing musician/person. Hope he brings the tour to the south pacific!
getting more Italian? Wtf does that mean? Lol
@@RonnieVaiArovo 😄
I think he just gives less of a shit about others opinions now. Which is amazing considering he's Steve Vai, a man who's musical identity is not giving a shit and making whatever he wants.
@@Roxanneredpanda the original comment was supposed to be fun arousing. Steve is looking so very like those Italian characters you can see in movies with this cap.
From where this don't give a damn thing comes? As far as I understand, Steve is an incredibly fun loving and humble guy. I bet if someone tells him that "Hey Steve you are getting more Italian" he'd just laugh his belly out and say, "well, more is more".
Seemed to me he was on pain meds for his shoulder and which made him a bit goofy. For instance, he thought it was Rig Rundown😂
I Love Steve, not only for his playing, but also for his class act in interviews, but Thomas N......he is the coolest tech out there. He is like Q is for James Bond. Cool rig. Modern touch on the classic rack system. That is one aspect of Vai I love too. He likes the tone in the room with tube preamps, powerampsand speakers. No IR's to front of house. Cool.
Agreed classy all around here!
Steve rocks up and not only is he cool to do the video, he's genuinely charming, enthusiastic and funny as always. What a guy!
Douglas is now the only guitar tech for the Vai tour in Europe, he's such a nice guy, I had the chance to meet him and chat with him after Steve's show in Spain, he even gave me one of Steve picks, glad you interviewed him!
What a great video. I love it when the “STAR” of the show comes out and greets you. That’s class!!! Well done Kris.
We didn't see Steve when we arrived and then BOOM there he was all of a sudden. Haha! Thanks man, glad to hear that you enjoyed the video! //Kris
I live for these kinds of videos. Carefully watching them, pausing, looking at dials, settings, brands, etc. Surely I'm not the only one who geeks out for this shit
Oh yeah I love it too
@@lowkeystarlord9545 Knew I wasn't nerdin' out alone on these rig rundowns lol
Thomas is a genius, there should be a documentary about him and the stuff he's made. I remember him from the Zappa band days making videos and the like.
I had no idea he used to be with Frank? Very cool and good on Steve to still keep him busy!
@@MoreMeRecording Yes, I think he was a tech in some capacity for Frank at the time Steve was in his band.
He's a lovely man and a true iconoclast. Nordegg doc please!
Unfortunately he is going to leave SV soon to retire. Or maybe its already over with. I think this was his last tour as tech!
@@prod_adrian The end of an era. I think his legacy is secure and it’s time for him to have a few days off :)
As much as his music doesn't really resonate with me (my loss) I can't help but like him because he comes over so well. Really funny, alert and accomodating. The respect he gave at the end was a really nice touch.
Gotta say that it's really nice catching Doug's vibrato motion in the same circular fashion as Steve's. Extra points to any Guitar Tech who tries to identify and match their client's playing idiosyncrasies in order to set up their gear to the best of their liking and needs. ¡Kudos!
Good eye.. ;-)
I always thought that circular thang was half classical vibrato, half blues. It works, and really begs one to listen.
@@marlinhall8298 That's exactly what it is, both vibratos at the same time. It sounds really even and smooth and it feels very nice to do once you master it.
If you listen closely you'll notice he even talks the same way.
Not only that, he's somewhat of a luthier. In another video he mentioned hes been scalloping necks, refretting, re-radiusing necks
I absolutely adore Steve. He's my hero and my all time favorite player. He's incredibly down to earth too.
While I will say , its nice to see Steve give a run down on his rig. Hes not the star in this interview. Mr. Thomas is. That man has probably seen and forgotten more stuff about electronics than most people could ever dream of to learn. A true work horse to this industry , guys like that are literally the reason that all this stuff comes together every gig. Without him , everything would come to a halt and you know , with Steve , as humanitarian as I feel he is. That is exactly what he would do if he could not have Mr. Thomas. He would be like , stop everything till he is back and good. As much as I would like to say thanks Steve for everything and that is still true , man , Mr. Thomas , You are the true master to all of this. Its literally amazing what you have done in your life and I look forward to hearing what you have in store for Steve as the years go on.
This video and the one with Thomas doing the setup are both amazing, thank you so much for doing these!
You are awesome Thomann. Thank you for this.
Fantastic rig rundown, really enjoyed it, and Steve gave a great run-through of everything!
What a crazy setup. Great video.
Thank you for this video. Incredible set! Hi from France!
Awsome interview, Steve is so cool and human, I love the way it took time to explain his rig!
This is incredible...Steve is one of a kind
Thanks for the video Kris! Really enjoyed the informative tour by Thomas, Doug and Steve himself!😎
Great video tnx! Thomas deserves video on his own - the way he structured and organized everything is a lesson.
Absolutely amazing video!
Wow! Thanks for sharing!!!!
🙏🙏💖🙏🙏
This is such an awesome thing to watch! Steve is an incredible human being and you just cant say enough about his achievements! Great video guys! Thanks!
Really enjoyed this, thank you!
Good job on the video guys! You're lucky to see Steve's gear in person.
I really wasn't expecting much from this video, but I'm so glad I watched it! I thought it would be a few shots of random things and a couple of questions. Wow, was I wrong! This was amazingly in-depth and getting to see both techs and Steve go through the rig was truly incredible.
Vai was sounding better than ever with that Scofield model! Great Video content here!
Steve seems like a great guy man. Amazing musician. Appreciate this vid guys. This is great stuff.
Incredible video!! Steve Vai is the BEST!!!
Great guy...always love to a good conversation and explain his rigs so others might have an ideal...good man
it's great when the artist shows how he develops his art
Vai always has the time for people. Exceptional guitar player, awesome human being.
So cool that Steve came in and did the rundown personally. Such a class act all the way.
Excellent video! Thanks for the behind the scenes peek
So glad to see steve touring again.
Steve is such a funny and down to earth dude. Hes one of the legends that actually embraces all of the new innovations in the music industry. Great rundown dudes. And phenomenal footage of the show
So great video !! Thx guys ! Love
Amazing rig, Steve is such a great guy.
Its nice to see Vai incorporating different guitars in his later years. The semi Hollow is a nice edition.
Absolutely! And he sounds awesome on the Scofield too. //Kris
Wow awesome video. I loved Zappa and I still hear some of that in Steve's playing.. Steve is an amazing unique musician imo, his phrasing, note choices. So cool to see how his live rig works
this is amazing! thank you!
So happy to see this video
I saw the Whitesnake tour with the mirror guitar in Orlando, Fl. Amazing concert. Good times.
Thanks for this video!🎸
Thanks for the video with my favourite guitar player
I love his tone... Crisp and note clarity
I love Steve Vai. He's been one of my unwitting mentors since I was ten years old and I cannot thank him enough.
thanks guys for this video , for sure this make me clearly how the route signal goes, and im so happy that thomas currently handle for the sound engineer so the guitar engineer its handle by doug .. steve god bless you all
This video is Vai GOLD - love it!
Thank You! Wonderful video!
Thanks a lot Christian! //Kris
Wow! I just missed his concert in Bergen, Norway.. thanks for this brilliant video
Fantastic video, loved it
Kudos to Steve for taking the time out for this interview.
Wow ! Super cool, thank you !
Steve just occasionally came up and just talk to You guys. What a legend.
Great to see this. Good job 👍 Thanks
Imagine the task of breaking all this down, hauling it away and setting it back up again every night. I'm breaking out in a sweat thinking about it. Of course it gets a little easier every time, but it's still a huge job.
Thanks for run down. Just seen Steve in Louisville KY and it was a great show. He had the Hydra but he did play it on a stand. They actually cancelled first show because of Steve reinjured his shoulder but it was well worth the wait and luckily it was two days before I had a full knee replacement and I was going if I had to crawl in. Again thanks for run down!
Excellent vid, nice to see Steve has an super reliable team behind him
Oh man, this is just too cool! I watched his pandemic videos where, on one, he was saying playing was not a natural automatic thing for him. He had to practice and work hard for it. Steve is an awe inspiring musician and is really great giving a rundown on his rig. Steve is Super-Man!
Fantastic video guys !
Great video. Enjoyed it. Great that you got to speak with Steve Vai. What a cool guy. I can see why he got on with Zappa.
Amazing Work! thank you for making these an experience! Grüsse aus Torres del PAine!
Great Video! Such a nice rig
Steve’s phenomenal, such a cool dude
Such a great video. Great job guys!
Thanks a lot Azhar! //Kris
Steve's knowledge of gear is also mind blowing! thanks for the great video...
I agree I find it amusing when they talk to the musician & they don’t even know what kind of strings they use. From what I understand Steve’s a great guy & great to work with. I’m a bass player from Buffalo & I’ve known Billy Sheehan since the old Talas days & he’s told me on many occasions what a great guy Steve is.
Far out solid and right on man!
Out of words...just wooooweeeee! Great job Kris!!!! 🤘
Awww Valeria, thanks so so much! It was a team effort and it was a very special day for us. 😌💛
Great job sir!! Clicked so fast!!
Hope you interview Steve someday!!
Amazing video!!!👌🏻👏🏻

Such an awesome video. Steve Vai seems like a good Dude
Loved the video
Awesome video, thanks!
Easily one of the best Live Rig videos I've seen and what a treat to have Steve himself walking us through. Great work!
Thanks a lot Domingo! I was a lot of fun making this one. Steve and the whole crew were super nice! Cheers //Kris
@@ThomannsGuitarsBasses I've been a Vai fan since 1984 and I enjoyed every minute of this :)
This particular vid about Vai's new rig it's so refreshing in comparison with the others out there 👍🏻
Incredible video. keep Up !

Incredible musician. Complex songs complex mixers insane!

Bueno thomann ya es hora de que vendan la fractal ! Buen episodio ! Gracias !
What an amazing Composer and Musician he is...
I'm going to see him on the 4th in the flesh! got the VIP package. awesome video as always!
great video !!
What a great video! I've become accustomed to great videos from Thomann. Steve never ceases to amaze me. I have tickets for the 10/20/ 2022 show in Orlando Florida. I have lost count of the number of shows I have seen so far, but I do know that I first saw Steve in NYC in1980 when he was in Frank Zappa's band and he made a big impression on me.
Thanks so much Fred! You can look forward to that show in Florida. Steve is incredible, better than ever. Cheers //Kris
THIS IS COOL, THANKS
awesome video!!
On the current European tour in 2023 Steve brought the Hydra and also custom painted the Ibanez 335!
Great meeting you guys!! Glad you enjoyed the show!
Thanks so much! You sounded amazing on stage dude, loved your solo with Steve! Have a great tour!
Now THAT’S what I call a rig rundown! Only thing missing was cabs and mic info. Something to include in 2023 eh?? I can’t imagine how cool it is to have this level of access and insight. Awesome job.
Wow! Very in depth. Steve has some fabulous ideas going. I love how Honest he has been over the last few years. (Gettin grumpy on the in ears subject haha) I love it. Id love a huge modeler and some Synergy modules. Way cool
