- Shortest runway in the world! HD 1080p, landing and take off, saba airport (Yrausquin Airport)
Saba/Yrausquin airport : 17º38´44N 63º13´14W
The airport's risky reputation arises from the airport's physical position: it is flanked on one side by high hills; and on the runway's other side and both ends, cliffs drop into the sea. Additionally, the runway at the airport is extremely short (400m) this creates the possibility that an airplane could under/overshoot the runway during landing or takeoff and end up in the sea or dashed on the rocky cliffs.
Although the airport is officially marked as closed to traffic (X), regional airline propeller aircraft are able to land there under waivers from The Netherlands Antilles' Civil Aviation Authority. The most common aircraft to land there are the Twin Otter and BN-2 Islander
Irausquin Airport can be seen from some places in Saint Martin.
Jet aircraft are unable to land at the airport, because the runway is too short (approx. 1,300 ft or 396 m). However, smaller airplanes (DHC-6, BN-2 and helicopters) are common sights there. There is a small ramp and terminal on the southwest flank of the runway. The ramp also has a designated helipad. The terminal building houses offices for Winair, immigration and security, a fire department with one fire truck and a tower. The tower is an advisory service only and does not provide air traffic control. Aviation fuel is not available on the island of Saba.
The only airline currently serving Yrausquin Airport is locally owned Winair, which operates daily flights to Sint Maarten and Sint Eustatius aboard a de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter. The flight to Saint Maarten takes about twelve minutes.
It's like an aircraft carrier without the cables
No, an aircraft is much more shorter
I was think the same thing; they should consider adding an arrester hook and a steam catapult :^D! lol
I see one R. Langford beat me to that quip, below - apologies.
there you go
Also it isn't on a ship. So not really like it at all, in fact.
the only runway in the world where they close it due to lack of wind.
Noel Whittle that’s what i thought ;)
Awesome!
Facts lol
it is a perfect airplane for this perfect runway ! no one tell you 747 can land here.
This would be a funny joke, but that's assuming it's not actually true... darn you, Poe's law!
The wind gives the runway ‘invisible’ length. Landing into the wind ensures lower speed ‘over ground’ but maintains airspeed over wings. Taking off into strong wind means you have airspeed over the wings whilst stationary..... so you’re ahead of the game before you throttle up.
But if you aren't on your game, bring your bathers.
I'm guessing they can't just land and take off when there's wind -- that's pretty restrictive. Although, on that point, there might typically be wind.
No shit, Sherlock.
Spot on
@@fastfootedone The Twin Otter in still air at MTOW can take off to 50' in 1200' of runway. The runway is 1300'. The landing rollout is 1000'. But of course the pilot has to be careful, there's not a lot of extra margin. Much of a tailwind could be fatal.
It's gradually getting longer, the planes that run off the end they just pile them up and pave over top of them.
I had a good laugh!
Oh shit 😭🤣
oh theres the dumb comment!
Reminds me of a dirt landing strip in Taveuni in the Fiji Islands in 1980. The approach was similar but fortunately the strip was longer.
Oh no !⚡️
And the guy isn't even using the whole runway. He managed to brake and control timely to turn into the taxiway...hands down. Hats off !
This is in Saba, Caribbean Netherlands, Juancho Yrausquin Airport, ICAO code TNCS. The aircraft is an DHC6-300 TWIN OTTER The best one of his kind, enjoy!!!
Proud of you!
I was wondering…
Been there 35 years ago diving. This runway looks the same in the video. The facilities appear to be upgraded substantially. The waiting area was a gazebo type shelter with 2 picnic tables. The few airport personnel were playing dominoes waiting for arrivals and departures. The entire island was fantastic, got some on Queenies Saba Spice.
All i could think of while watching this was, how much i'd love living there...it must be super remote, no covid, no crazy news 24/7...just doing your job on the island..get your weekly delivery by that plane, enjoy life...
COVID-19:
"I just purchased my ticket, stay tuned..."
The pathogen to worry about is unmitigated irrational paranoia being cultivated in the minds of healthy people.
Get informed...and no....not from the news. Have people forgotten that you can't believe everything you see on TV? Its a production. Not the raw truth.
Don't think they're letting us in. Wifi's too slow anyway
It’s called Saba it’s in the carribean
Most people have two or more jobs. The guy that stamped my passport appeared as a waiter at the Chinese restaurant that evening and as a fireman the next day. My taxi driver by day was a restaurant owner/operator by night.
The strong wind at the nose helps bigtime.
Somewhat, but it was more like a cross wind from the port side.
Indeed. It would be REALLY impressive if he lands from opposite direction.
I think this is the point -- you probably cant land and take off without it
@@z0uLess It looks like that would be the case especially with his long take off. I watched it again and the 1st time I must have missed seeing the wind sock, because it does look like it was almost a straight on head wind.
@@ckmoore101 Or heads for a dive.
Well if it goes wrong you get a boat trip instead....
LUCKYJ3SS3
Or an enthusiastic pod of Orca whales who are known to patrol these shores in search of a bad take off!!!
Or do some snorkeling...
You've got a little space to glide down and try to get some lift. I'm not a pilot, but if I was, I would take off out of that place and never come back.
That would be both my first and last ocean cruise.
Respect if you can launch a boat from that airfield! 😂
Yup!!! I’ve been to Saba and remember going on that plane! Scary as hell. What they don’t show you in this vid, is how close the planes wing gets to the side of the cliff when you’re coming in for a landing. I miss Saba and want to go back again but maybe this time by boat lol.
Why do people go there?
@@osamaz2780. Look it up, it is a gorgeous emerald in the blue sea surrounding it. It has fabulous nature, hiking, scuba diving and relaxing of course🌊☺️
Hahaha,...by boat...👍👍👍😆😆😋
@@osamaz2780 because it’s beautiful. My bestie is from there so I went whack home with her when I was 18. I loved it minus the landing lol.
if you listen carefully you can hear the tower controller scream "increase island to full speed!"
Time stamp?
Anna Seban was that an attempt at a joke or are you literally that stupid?
brett run no I just have bad hearing
brett run think before you say something like that
Anna Seban you really don’t understand how stupid that question was? Comparing an island to an aircraft carrier? Please tell me you got it.
This is just awesome! Both takeoff and landing were equally interesting to watch.
The only airport in the world where the captain directs the passengers to assume crash position prior to takeoff.
Hahahahahahahahaa
Saba is a great dive spot.
Nice video!
Always helpful when your airspeed is 45 kts before you even release the parking brake!
Try plockton .......
R. Expecially if your take off speed is 46 knots 😅
I imagine the an2 would have a grand time here
So long as it doesn't increase & start blowing you backwards!!! 😦
"Rolling, 20 knots V1 rotate!" - blimey.
alfievision hahahahahahahhahahaah 20 knots XD
alfievision LOL!
That's about right for the Twin Otter.
+alfievision Only an IDIOT would say "rotate" when rolling at only 20 knots DISASTER
Humour is not your strong point I see
Nice video! The deHavilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter is a fantastic aircraft to fly because of its ability to land almost everywhere, land and sea. Now it is produced by Viking Air. I wish I had one.
Pintuxo h
I wish I had any airplane. And the skills/training to fly it. That's where X-Plane 11 comes in, to get my fix
Between that headwind and it being a Twin Otter I was almost expecting a vertical takeoff
It takes a special sort of pilot to say "I'm going to go full throttle off that cliff"
Harrison Hedge 😂😂😂😂
No shit! That must be some kind of rush!
better than going half throttle
@gary ashe an aircraft carrier can make itself longer by moving under the airplane. Island is stationary
Hang glider pilots do it all the time! Adrenaline rush for sure.
It looks like a catapult and arrestor wires might be useful here. ;-)
Write Brothers agree with the catapult.
Yeah mate passengers would f*cking love that
Thank God for winds nearly straight down the concrete.
And pull 3 gs on takeoff
Nah man, ski jump
From a Saba site:
Depending on wind conditions it is possible to land on both ends of the runway. On a wind still day (which is less likely) you can expect a 30 landing. Under normal conditions you'll be landing 120, now this is something else! The approach is practically at a cliff, the rugged terrain of Saba blocks out the entire sky as you peer over the shoulders of your pilots. Then it's a sharp bank left and a gentle touchdown. Landing on Saba is an art form.
Thank you for the memories (2--r/t flights) of my 1994-1995 medical school years at Saba University Medical School. Back then I measured (paced) the runway to be about 1300 feet. That's about all they can squeeze out of that terrain.
Saba University medical school in an island without an airport ?
@@adimchionyenadum2962 yea if im not wrong at the time you could become an md after 2 years of studies....🥶
4 years to qualify as an M. D. ---- 2 at Saba, 2 in the States ---- also Pass 3 USMLE national Step Tests.
Rotating with 2 feet left of the runway. Those pilots got some balls, man. And the passengers, bladder of steel LOL!
"Short" is offensive. It's "length challenged".
ah reference to czcams.com/video/o25I2fzFGoY/video.html
Ok snowflake
@WillGaming94 ok snowflake
@Tanishq Chauhan that man is corect tho say thing as they are dont fucking make them pritier
The word "challenged" is offensive and threatening to mankind. ooopps, I meant humankind.
Love those De Havilland twin otters. Super dependable. Would know the sound of one anywhere.
That's a very short runway. Back in the 1970's when I was a private pilot in Hawaii, the old WW II military runway at Ford Island in Pearl Harbor was open to private planes to practice touch and goes. It was really short but a bit longer than this one. I left Hawaii in 1978 and the Ford Island runway was still available for private planes. I returned on business in 2001 and it had been plowed under but you could tell it had been a runway. The Navy hasn't built anything on it so I suspect they just wanted to close it to private planes practicing. Perhaps because NSA built a large facility about 100 meters from the threshold or perhaps they had one or more accidents since the crosswinds on the approach could require full opposite rudder and still had to land with a significant crab into the wind.
Great fun flying around the Hawaiian islands. Initial takeoffs and the landings were at Honolulu International airport squeezed in between 747's and many other passenger planes. Tower always wanted us to land as quickly as possible and turn off because a Heavy was always in the approach behind me.
Oh yeah? Well I used to watch Magnum P.I. ;)
An interesting story. I just looked at it on Google Maps and the 'runway' layout is visible. may even be able to see some paint from the runway numbers.
Incredibly short runway
Hatsoff to pilots
What we have here is an aircraft carrier that can`t be sunk.
It's interesting to note that it's quite a bit longer than even the biggest carriers. It doesn't have any of the assistance gear either, of course, but even so...
Where is the arresting gear?!?
Actually, I was just thinking the only way a jet is taking off from that runway is with a cat..
@@paulabraham2550 400 meters vs about 150 meters for the landing area on a Nimitz-class flight deck.
@@thomasfitzgerald1027 In the sea
It's quite a tense landing for passengers, having been there. The take-off is no less stressful, or should I say, exciting ... wonderful island, fabulous people.
Exciting isn’t a word that comes to mind. Death-defying maybe. Landing seems insane
Thanks for sharing, I think I never go this island in my life
They need a steam catapult here and arresting wires.
Arresting Wires, - what the heck felony did the plane commit?
@@Sprocket-Mecurio it commited aircraft carrier.
That's rich! Sorry, no boiler!

Just DeHavelin Canada, and Viking Air. to make the amazing Twin Otter.
Looked like it needed the full length to take off. Landing was soothing.
and the award for the youtube video with the most wind noise ever goes to...THIS GUY!!!!
love all the comments complaining about the noise of the wind... they didn't have to share this amazing video with us. I don't see you out there capturing cool videos. everyone's got to complain about something all the time. Thanks for uploading. wind noise or not
I'm not too sure I'm entirely happy with the grammatical construction of that observation Me.
Besdie which, to get your point across I feel what it really needs is an amazing video of someone carping pointlessly about suffering from wind attached to it.
Also, for completeness, it needs a perfectly good heading which people can pedantically point out is technically incorrect.
You kidding me? That wind is a beautiful sound. It would be a much scarier video without it
Whats to complain about? I've got volume control on my pc and it solves the problem nicely.
+Me 2016 complaining is a jewish thing
Well said
That is so well photographed, thanks.
I'm glad it told me "landing" or i wouldn't have known lol
Huge thumbs up to those very skilled... and brave... Winair pilots who do this daily! St. Bart's, another of Winair's popular destinations in the area, is also extremely challenging.
I heard that they recently had the whole island carpeted.
I will not forget this airport all my life.
February 2017.
I approached the landing with a strong wind behind me.
There was also a weak side wind, but I overcame it quite easily.
We were pushed forward too much.
My wheels touched the runway about half of it. I realized I did not have much distance left to stop.
Within half a second I shouted at my co-pilot to get out of the landing process immediately !!! Take off again, now !!! Full strength!! I realized I would not be able to stop in time before the cliff.
Behind me sit 35 passengers and two crew members. With confidence mixed with fear I pushed the gas all the way forward. Full gas !!
At the end of the runway I felt a strong drop down, I lifted shelves with maximum intensity, praying to God we would get out of it in peace.
The plane went down a little more and lost altitude, half flight, half free fall...
I saw the sea approaching quickly. I thought about my daughters at home, about my wife ... only miraculously I was finally able to stabilize the plane and catch altitude.
We survived !!
I will never return to this airport iny life!!!
Just joking.😉
That was really dull bro.
Excellent quality video from Saba from 10 years ago. It demonstrates the very challenging environment to safely transport passengers to this smallest jewel of the Eastern Antilles.
The pilots here all earn their pay!
Used to fly in and out of a 8' x 800' paved runway in Northern California in the 1960s.
Is it possible for an airport to be "adorable"?? This one certainly is, from the tiny runway to the tidy little terminal building. Oh, and very impressive take-off and landing. Love the Twin Otter!!
Que lugar lindo! Parabéns pela preservação da obra de Deus.
The pilot didn't even need the whole runway to land ... good brakes too! But they needed every inch for the takeoff.
Mango Julie 123 Not correct, but a good story. He held it down on purpose to gain maximum lift. He could have been airborne before he was, but chose not to be. He was possibly concerned about the weight in the aircraft.
Colin Harrison yeah V1 and (actual) Vr were way separated.
I imagine landing there would get REALLY harry when it's wet, especially if there's standing water on the runway, no braking then. I just finished watching a real 737 pilot review the recent Fed Ex plane that overshot a runway in Aberdeen, on a probably rain flooded runway. Coulndn't brake properly and needed max reverse thrust on the jets to stop at all, and still overran the runway, luckily the pilot was able to get them safely stopped still on the blacktop though, so no harm done. This runway, an accident like that would mean you're back in the air again, with not enough speed for lift.
@@davidpearn5925 as soon as he releases the brakes its already v1 lol 😂
With that wind it was a normal length runway. Zero challenge.
That’s the length of my driveway
The twatter is such a great plane.
Yes it is. Disregard the previous crap comments. The armchair pilots couldn't fly a golf ball through a tennis racquet
Roger Heyward so heyward stop you mindless peace of trash zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz andriod
I love it
snowcatxx87 Wait... wat? What is Snowcat doing here? I didn't think cats like to fly?
snowcatxx87 Snowcat? Huh, fancy seeing you here lol. I'm a subscriber.
ground speed - zero naughts
airspeed - 100 naughts
Pretty much, right. stall speed for a TO is 56 knots it can land in 50 feet. with a 30 knot head wind the perspective for a passenger when landing has to be bizzare when looking out the side window.
I think you mean knots lol. Naught means zero.
@@SpencerHHO Ahh, lol. I was actually assuming it was "nauts" as in "nautical" miles but spell check didn't allow it. But i guess it is indeed knots, the same word used for tied ropes..english...
@@azonicrider32 Interestingly, it is called 'knot' because it used to literally be measured by knots in a rope! Knots were tied at fixed distances on a length of rope, which was trailed behind a ship, and by timing how long, and how many knots were drawn out, behind the ship as it moved, they worked out their speed in nautical miles per hour, or 'knots' :)

There is probably no flight attendant either...
Carrier guys did a great job with camo!
Also helps to be landing into a 30 know headwind every time.
Great video, good to watch even 10 years later👍
Helps to have a high-efficiency STOL aircraft like the De Havilland Canada DHC6 Twin Otter!
Looking at the flaps, I don't think it was configured for STOL on takeoff.
Hear the joke: A pilot lands an airplane and said, "Man that was the shortest runway I have ever landed on." The copilot replied, "Yeah and look how wide it is!"

I think some aircraft carriers are longer that that runway. They almost need an arresting cable.

The wife and I are pilot so it was very interesting flying in to Saba in a twin otter from the island of St. Martin to spend a few days scuba diving. The take off is almost a swan dive off the end of the runway also.
Aw GEEZ!!!!! YiKes .. but what a beautiful sight coming in and that tblue ocean...simply beautiful! Thanks Eli!!
Simply beautiful. Would love to pilot that.
Sign this waiver form and next of kin information. Welcome to our airline!
Reminds me of Brevoort Island, Canada. The runway may have been even shorter. Landing was up hill, take off down hill. The crazy part was, the plane drove off the end off the runway which a 400 ft cliff. We reached air speed just before hitting the ocean. Yes it was a Twin Otter also.
I was on the crew that built that DEW Line runway as a 19 yr old summer of 1956, and went home in Sept on the 2nd plane to ever take off from it.
Amazing Wind beneath my wings soundtrack.... where can I download it?

Ha! CZcams offered this video with the pic showing the end of the runway, and I immediately wondered if it was Saba!!!
Gorgeous, bucolic place. I ate the most acidic grapefruit I have ever tasted on that island - it took the enamel off my teeth! I'd love to go back, but not for the grapefruit.
That didn't look too hard. I bet I could land a plane on a runway twice as long!

If I were at the controls of an airplane in flight, I can guarantee it will end up on the ground before too long.
I hope the 1st officer doesn't have a stammer...."v-v-v-v-v-v1......oh, never mind....."
Been to Saba...a beautiful little island! Went there from Sint Maarten via the "Edge" fast ferry. The dock at Fort Bay can be as "hairy" as the Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport. Made the trek up to the top of Mount Scenery. Very friendly local people. Actually, I would love to live there...
I have to admit my palms would be sweating on that take off roll !
Awesome Pilot .

Well they were off centreline by quite a bit.
Ryland Brough It's south of St. Maarten. You can see it in the distance. Saba is quite mountainous.
Saba IS a mountain.
Fascinating. Thanks for the great description.
The wind sounds like a 747 could land.
Definitely it could land but take off?? Uh oh lol
the runway literally says ( fly or die ) .
And I though that the old Madeira runway lenght was short :-))

Looks like a lot longer than what I flew off for years but I had a tail hook to stop me.
WoW~ Cute little Arport Runway~^.^
Imagine as a pilot you landed late and missed the entrance and had to turn around to do the walk of shame :D
I’m sure there are aircraft carriers longer than that!
No actually, no carrier longer than 350m. There *was* a crazy British scheme for a longer iceberg carrier called the Habakuk. 1,2km runway for heavy bomber.

I 've been there, too. in my case of landing the aircraft carried out "touch and go" like a naval fighter landing on the air craft carrier. it was so great.
