Dimensions: 3937 x 59 feet / 1200 x 18 meters

The Pilot is my Father, Cap. Carlos Cateriano Martínez, former Fighter Pilot of the Peruvian Air Force.
Is the flight this video is based on a regular scheduled flight into this airport?
Hi Bill. This Chagual Aerodrome is used every week to transport personnel of a gold minning in the north part of the Andes High Mountains in Perú. ATSA Airlines is the airline that used to go to this aerodrome due a contract with that minning company named "La Poderosa" (The Powerful in english). ATSA means in spanish Aero Transporte S.A. (Aero Transport Anonymous Society). I flew with my Father 3 years in ATSA, from 2007 (when I left the Peruvian Navy) to 2010 when I decide to go to fly for Star Perú Airlines. Since january 1st., 2020 I am flying for ATSA again. The last 6 years I was flying as a E190 Captain for Copa Airlines and living in Panama City with my family. But due to the pandemic we decide to the retired and continue working in my small bussiness in Panama but in the next months I received a call from a ATSA Manager from Perú and I accept the ATSA proposal to start flying with them again. Normally we used to fly to Chagual the Piper Cheyenne III, but now a days ATSA flies the B200 for that purpose.
Buen dia.
Saludos 👍

It’s the Stache that gave him the confidence to land that like a boss
You got that right.
That and those massive balls.
I'm actually surprised he could see anything after forgetting his aviators.
Balls of steel.
It's what keeps him alive.
I love how he puts it down fifty feet before the line, plenty of precaution, enough time to change your mind for a high altitude go-around. What a nice approach!
Might have been 50 yards even....🤐
That's called a displaced threshold. You're not supposed to land before the numbers. If you do, you're risking not clearing obstacles on final.
@@toldt As well as landing on tarmac not designed to withstand the load.
@@JohnBaleshiski A displaced threshold has full strength pavement like the rest of the runway, and is approved for all operations except landing. Its purpose is to ensure proper obstacle clearance. I definitely felt like this approach was a bit low, and this feeling was confirmed when touchdown occurred before the displaced threshold.
@Shad rocks Its probably comparatively large for what that airport serves. I'd imagine a little 2-4 seater single prop could land there without too much problem.
You earned my respect. To the casual observer recognize both sides of the canyon walls have differing air currents updrafts, downdrafts, then the ground temp and air. Very skilled

Yes, when I saw the mustache, I knew this would be no problem and all would be well. First thing I look for when I board a commercial flight, is to make sure the pilot or co-pilot have a mustache! Thankfully, mustaches are prevalent at the higher echelons of commercial aviation.
If you can rock a moustache, you can drive 10 to 800 people around.
Correct, mustache means business.

Very nice approach and landing. This video proves to the whole world , without any doubts, that your father is an excellent pilot and a fine example to follow in that profession. Keep up the great work guys.
Now that is the moustache of a Man who fears neither short runways nor unexpected gusts of tail wind! That is the moustache of a pilot I would entrust my life with. Excelent landing. Well, maybe. In about '03 I met a chap called Mike. I was a taxi driver and flying enthusiast. He was a pilot and new arrival in Australia. We ended up day / night driver on the same car, so I chatted with Mike. Mike told me he'd come from Afghanistan, and had been the personal pilot of El Presidente - before the Russians arrived. He was a qualified 747 captain, and had flown into & out of Kabul with the boss aboard, often. I mentioned in conversation that the RAAF sends pilots to PNG for experience, because "It's the most hostile flying environment in the world."
"Really?" he said, "Why's that?"
I listed geography and landscape, weather & climate, lack of modern equipment and facilities, and many local people who might not be hunter-gatherers themselves, but were two generations removed at best. He answered me by pointing out that local tribal people in PNG don't have Stinger missiles and a strong desire to use them. Then he described the geography around Kabul, and what an approach or departure involves in a 747, including the bit where the pilot & all other crew watch for smoke trails or other signs of SAM launch, while the pilot flys HOTAS, ready to chop to flight idle on 1 sec warning, and then deal with whatever that does to flighspeed and terrain and such.
"Did you ever have to do that? Chop power and avoid a SAM?"
"Yes. Several times."
"So, is that the toughest place you've ever had to go?"
"One of them. But I don't think it's quite as bad as Aspen."
"Aspen!? Like, Colorado? In the US?"
"Yeah. That's my least favourite airport in the world."
I'll cut this short and go to a bullet list.
Altitude.
Weather conditions, including low visibility and icing.
Terrain.
Traffic - lots of it, and some of that is professional regular service airlines, some is professional charter pilots and such, and some is private pilots in their own aircraft. Nowhere in the world are you more likely to meet the doctor about to die in his V-tail doctor killer, than Aspen. They take advice / instructions from ATC the way they take alternative medical advice. Obedience is not their first instinct.
So, that's it in a nutshell. I have it from the ex personal pilot of the Afghan president, that getting a 747 into Kabul is second on the frightening list, to flying charter Learjets and KingAirs and such into and from Aspen. Make of that what you wish, but I think it was funny.
Boring
and then you guys made love....
I know about a doc from the news, whose aircraft wondered into restricted airspace and had one of its wings cut off clean by a steel cable from a tethered Air Force blimp....

Crazy approach but great skills! Nice landing in Peru! Fly high and safe and often!
I saw the displaced threshold and I was like, “I don’t care what the regs say, I’m putting her down before the displaced threshold”. Then he did it.
I was thinking the same thing. Likely much safer in this situation.
@@kslats916 it would be hard to have a safety chat with a pilot at this airport. They're clipping hedges for a few miles on the way in
Yeah, this is not a place for lawyer-pilots. Layers aren't God and their laws don't override neither laws of physics nor technical specs, so - sometimes one needs to pick between doing something the legal way, or in such a way that actually works. Not many such situations in the well-developed world, but a place like this is a good example.
Its also a down sloping runway, and if youd just flown that youd wanna be on the ground asap too hahaha
This airport shouldnt even exist lmao, fuck a displaced threshold get the airplane on the ground

I think I’d want a Dornier 228, or GAF Nomad for such a job. Excellent work by the pilot!
Great landing, considering how dangerous that approach was, that’s one excellent pilot.
I can only imagine the first time going there you could have to have somebody who's been there before with you to just barely clear the top of that mountain isn't something someone's going to do unless they have to
I guess the traffic pattern after a go around is huge... 🤔
The pilot looked very calm. I wouldn't fancy trying that at night.
Engine failure on take off must be a worry.
Ohmigosh!!! I didn't think of THAT!! The takeoff view is probably even MORE frightening. Yikes! Great comment~

er... well, full moon you can see pretty good. But there is no way that runway is going to be "safe" under the best of conditions.
they only fly during the middle of the day, fog in the morning and the wind is howling up the canyon mid-afternoon, great for landing but complicates the downwind takeoff.
and engine out would mean certain death, you have a 20 knot tailwind on a down inclined strip, and then you need to immediately start climbing at a minimum of 2,500FPM in plane that was not weighed but full of mining parts, people, and gold
Yeah, most airports are OK to have engine failure at takeoff, not here though, good point.

That was awesome. Very close to the mountains.
I have been on a plane that flew into and out of Lukla in Nepal and this makes Lukla look like a major international airport. The runway is better looking than Lukla's, but getting to it is just nasty scary.
I have flown into some cities going to Mexico not as a pilot, sometimes going through mountain ranges, but nothing like this. Holy crap, nice job.
Dang! That looked like David Crosby at the wheel landing up in the mountains to pick up a kilo of snow. "Marrakesh Express" indeed.
Wow! That was amazing! Brilliant pilot!
a landing strip between needled mountaintops! definately one of the hardest in the world...but the pilot's amazing skill makes it look easy!!! he might be able to land a Boeing 373 there as well with his skill...it seems like an airport only meant for light aircraft and propellered aircrafts, turbojets will find this place almost impossible to land...
another thing that is amazing is how smooth the airplane cuts through the mountains there, with not too much turbulence, because air can become very turbulent between mountains like those...and up and down drafts can make airflow patterns very unpredictable between mountains, for instance if you fly on an upslope mountain side the wind might convex under the wings forcing the aircraft upwards, lessening necessary angle of attack, and once you are over the peak or ridge of the mountain the wind might have a downdraft forcing the plane down to fall or causing rapid anticipation of the angle of attack for the pilot...you must have nerves of steel to fly there, and artistic level of skill!!!
And that, my friend, is why you aren't getting a gram of coke for less. Stop complaining.
Lol no kidding huh ...
