I personally don’t believe that he told him that-the very last time he went (and never returned). I’m not saying that Race wouldn’t have harbored that thought about Brody at some point. He may even have verbally expressed it to Brody from one older wrestler to a slightly younger wrestler. But we get Race’s point in that we all know someone like Brody, who we often worry will get himself into big trouble for messing with the wrong individual.

@@westyraviz I believe Harley. I've seen other interviews where it was said Brody owned a piece of the P.R territory and was being short changed. He was going over and getting his money one way or the other. That's why Race warned him not to go over with that tough guy attitude, he wouldn't live to get off the island.
The quiet humble man is much more dangerous than the loud arrogant one. Harley Race being a prime example of this. A true man's man may he RIP

@@danielburger1775 The toughest? Probably not. But there are enough stories about Harley from other people that make it pretty obvious he was a tough guy and not to be messed with. Plus, there are just the documented stories...like him continuing to fight and running two guys out of a diner (for harrassing and/or slapping a woman) after one had stabbed him in the back! Lol.
Race was the perfect manager for Vader. Everyone knew he was a tough ass, and it really gave the sense that Harley was the only one that could handle Vader.
He used to Leon a fat baby 😂 he could definitely handle him.

It’s impossible not to hang on every word that Harley Race speaks. He’s such a legend.

They don't make men like Harley anymore... Which is probably best for the rest us. On a serious note, he was an absolute legend. Met him at WM XX decades ago and of all the wrestlers I ever met, that was the biggest thrill for me. He was a gentleman and saw my young son wanted to get a picture but was nervous, so Harley placed him at ease with a few jokes. One of my favorite memories!
Harley is a legend as a wrestler and as a man. We won't see another quite like him again.

Back in the day of "2 out of 3 falls with a 10 time limit". When Harley says someone was fairly tough they must have been tough.
Harley met Chuck Norris and they both said, "Tie.".
Such wisdom, having to go in the territory and wrestle top guys all the time, then putting them over….. very wise business practice. Helped in maintaining and making a lot of the smaller territory.
I loved hearing about wrestling from Harley's perspective. He's much more intelligent than I thought and he's been there forever...

Bruiser Brody as I understand it was widely hated by promoters and bookers. He would reportedly check the house before the bouts and then refuse to wrestle unless he was given what he believed was a fair cut of the take.

When I was about 7 years old, I got to see Bruno Sammartino against Stan Hansen in a steel cage at the old Boston Garden. It was the bloodiest match I've seen even to this day.
I still wish wrestling was back in the territory days, but the one drawback was that you couldn't ever see Championss outside of your area. I never got to see Harley Race or Nick Bockwinkle wrestle in their prime. I only ever got to read about them in wrestling magazines. I would have killed to see Bruno wrestling against Harley Race.
Interestingly enough, Bobby Heenan was asked what he thought of Bruiser Brody during a shoot interview and this was his response:
“Never liked the man at all (Brody)…. very selfish. He would come into a territory and have the mentality of wanting to stick it to the promoters. So what he would do is he would screw up matches purposely or try to destroy business. But he didn’t realize there was a guy in that first match that was maybe making 50 bucks and needed that to pay his car payments, or maybe a child support payment some place, and if Bruiser Brody kills that business, that takes that poor guy out of 50 bucks and I believe when you’re a top guy you owe something to everybody on that card…. to be professional, and to make sure that you do it right. If you don’t want to work for the guy (promoter), then tell him that, but don’t screw the other guys on the card because they got to come back next week, you don’t!”….
He wasn’t wrong.

To be fair, Brody’s worst enemy was probably the guy in Puerto Rico with the 🔪.
Brody had roughed him up in the 70s in the WWWF. He never forgot it.

Wrestling is like any other job, do your work as required by your boss and company, make sure they are happy and be a team player with your coworkers. Brody ignored these basic tenets because he though he was special somehow and the rules did not apply to him. Well, they do and he found out the hard wary because he was not the only one who ignored the rules.

I just watched the match in Japan against Brody & Hansen. Race & Bonkwinkel held their own very well against them.
I baited him with the left, and hooked him with the right.

Yes. Back before CZcams and the internet I used to watch Brody when he was in Georgia Championship Wrestling. I also saw him live against some babyface (I think it was the brother of one of the Rock and Roll Express) and Brody beat the hell out of him all over the arena...and since I was sitting right over the heel's entrance I spit a big loogie right on his chest. You don't know fear until you see Bruiser Brody look up at you deciding whether or not to scale the wall to come and wipe you out. Sounds like you've listened to your share of wrestling podcasts, and definitely some with Jim Ross, so use your internet to research Brody's feud with Abdullah, Brody in Japan, Brody no-selling Lex Luger and really just any Brody matches.
It's weird that you question my knowledge of a wrestler I saw fight live and weekly on tv when in Georgia and you're citing wrestlers you only know in retrospect, based on what others said about them and...quite frankly...you probably never even have seen wrestle. I mean, you'll probably lie since this is the internet, but how many matches have you seen Lou Thesz or Danny Hodge wrestle anyway??

Fairly tough in Harley terms is bullet proof in Human terms
Japan was different than the States, in Japan it was all about the match and the moves, the combat, in the States it was about the story, why they fight more than the fight itself. As we note so often with Hulk Hogan, in Japan he let his full range of moves show, while in the WWE it was mostly punch, kick, and clothesline, that's what the fans here wanted and that's what Hogan gave them, he could do the more complicated moves, he just didn't have to.
And Hansen's stiffness has always been legendary. He wasn't a bully or "tough guy" like Brody was, but his eyesight was so bad he could never gauge his working punches that accurately, and the rule of the day was that if you can't throw a working punch right it was better to be stiff than to throw airballs.
Harley was referring to the 70s when he said there were more similarities.

When I was a child I couldn't understand why this man was my grandpa's favorite celeb/wrestler. I mean stars like Tommy Rich and Tony Atlas just seemed so much more exciting. He told me that in reality he was a very humble and incredibly tough man. I became a fan myself.

Same Florida incidentally where Dusty Rhodes turned Face in 1974 against his then Manager Gary Hart and then Partner Pak Song. Can Dusty Rhodes trust Harley Race as a Partner (and vice versa) when Dusty himself was backjumped by Dick Murdoch and Ernie Ladd to name just two? Haku doesn't stretch people like Harley did. He bit faces and pulled out eyes. Haku maimed people for life in two seconds. Haku would do that to Harley.

The more I learn about Bruiser Brody, the less sad I am that he got killed. The asshole got what was coming to him. I never... EVER heard of a wrestler who doesn't have an attitude problem having any issues, be it in Japan, Mexico or Puerto Rico.

@@kevthegoat8774 - What's wrong with SAYING it? Nothing. However, I disagree. Brody was tough. Period. Harley's shaving points off Brody's toughness because Bruiser treated wrestling like a business. He destroyed opponents, changed clothes, went to his hotel room and ate cans of tuna with his bare hands. That's Brody. Harley liked to do stuff like walk into a WWF event in Kansas City packing heat and cornering Hulk Hogan, challenging him as to why they were in HIS city doing a show. Harley's definition of completely tough included getting into fights outside the ring and bullying people around just so they'd know exactly how tough he was...and he was tough. But so was Brody.
He was right about Stan Hansen. His style was all wrong for the US and he was really dangerous to work with. The thing with Bruno hurt his reputation more than it helped because he legit injured him. The AWA title run was a disaster because Hansen cared more about his reputation in Japan than doing business in the US.
Nobody believed Harley Race was the toughest guy more than Harley Race.

I love the story about Race being offered big bucks to wrestle in LA and he went there 1 week and was in traffic for 5 hours every day. Can you imagine how crazy Harley must have been sitting in 5 lanes of bumper to bumper traffic and not being able to move . I can just picture him cursing to Blue Hell in that car
