RIP to the late great American Dream. Here Dusty talks about his infamous gimmick in WWF where he was paired with Sweet Sapphire as his manager and asked to wear polka dots.
Fans for years have theorized that the character was a rib by Vince McMahon since Dusty was booking his main competition at Jim Crockett Promotions.
Hear why Dusty says he didn't mind the gimmick and was happy to get it over. He also thanked Vince for bringing in his son Dustin Rhodes (later renamed Goldust) in the early 90s.

The polka dots were terrible... as a teenager I said "why?" Dusty got over, got over bigtime... but it was definitely satire... cartoonish... If Dusty wanted to do it, then bless him... Maybe at that time he knew he couldn't get over as a straight baby vs a heel... Theres no way he could go up against Undertaker, Kane, or any big nasty.... Dusty had that sweet Mid South style.

Vince treated Dusty like dirt. Vince always took it personal with Dusty. The story of the polka dots and Sapphire has been told by many people. Dusty pulled it off. Vince just wanted to make Dusty work for it. It's even worse that Vince didn't treat his sons any better. Thank God HHH is in control now. If Vince were still there Cody would not be champion.

Okay, Dusty can say, all day long, that Vince McMahon didn't intend to embarrass him with the polka dot gimmick, but when he says Vince was "testing him" with it, that's the "tell." Rhodes wasn't in his prime at that point, but he wasn't all that far from it, and his character was a total badass, for years, in the NWA, so what he may have been at some early stage of his career isn't relevant. He built himself into a legend in the rival company. Seems to me that the polka dot gimmick was an intentional effort to humiliate him, publicly and brutally. They wanted to show the fans what they could do to the top guy from the other promotion. I hated what McMahon and the WWF did to Dusty Rhodes.

    • @Chrisdrumz

You'd think with how much Vince McMahon loved his company being mentioned outside the wrestling bubble, here comes a character that everyone outside of wrestling was talking at that time and he never was the world champ. You'd think Goldust would've been doing the media tour non-stop at the time.
