How to Identify Effective Pinpoints for Goal Setting | Avoiding Common Pitfalls

  • Welcome to today's discussion! Today, we tackle a critical question: how do we identify specific pinpoints that allow you or your employees to set effective goals? I'm sharing this because I've made many mistakes in the past by identifying the wrong pinpoints.
    For instance, early on in developing our California branch, I measured payroll compared to revenue but missed the cost of payroll. This incorrect metric misled me, resulting in setting the wrong goals and veering off in the wrong direction. Setting the wrong pinpoint can send you on the wrong trajectory.
    To help us identify the right pinpoints, I've posed this question to our expert panel: how do we identify the right pinpoints to target, enabling employees to set effective goals?
    Over 36 years, I've found one pinpointed action that leads to significant results at the global, department, and individual levels. This action impacts staff satisfaction, on-site coaching, and more. It involves actively engaging with employees and understanding their reasons for leaving previous jobs and joining your organization. Often, they leave due to a lack of upward mobility.
    The key action is on-site supervision, either in a school district or at home, focusing on a few critical KPIs. For example, understanding if employees can create opportunities for engagement in the classroom. The mechanism isn't as important as the function.
    We implemented a system where employees have a QR code on their ID. Supervisors scan it to pull data, allowing BCBAs to check if employees can describe or demonstrate functional equivalents on-site. This method ensures comprehensive engagement, training, and performance assessment.
    This hands-on, real-time feedback approach covers various essential areas, ensuring that employees are equipped to set and achieve meaningful goals.
