You ruined the truck when you ls swapped it, put a bad ass big block carburated engine in it and be done
Wait til you've driven an LS. Believe me. I own several of each.
I'm telling ya your computer problems are over if you carb that ls and make it single minded to do one thing run when it's told to fuel injection is over rated ls motors run just as good if not better with a carb it's a investment
I have a 66 Mustang with a Holley sniper. I wouldn’t back to a carb. Nothing like fuel injection.
@gregdiamond6023 for some folks I guess, I'll keep my carburetor I can tune it and make it perform like I want it to
@rockatanskyrodshop8533. I’ll keep my fuel injection, I can tune it and make it run like I want it to while getting better fuel mileage and horsepower. I’ll never exchange fuel injection for a carburetor.
What do you bet the guy that built the pressure regulator is driving home from work on a 55 year old moped and laughing at us all.
😂
Lol
Commies......
I’ve had quite a few of those fuel pressure regulators go bad. But never that bad, normally just causes them to run poorly and long crank after sitting hot. Make sure that used one is not leaking as well. I normally drive it, then let it sit a few minutes, then pull that vacuum line off to make sure it isn’t wet with fuel.
That injector saw those red plug wires, thought it was a race truck, and needed more fuel. 😆
I’d go with the Goodwrench 350 in that Nova with power disc brakes up front, those new wheels look good on it 👍
Nothing like a real head scratcher of multiple issues, always a choice of a part issue leading to an existing issue that was found during diagnostics. The noise you heard is concerning, but you would figure the push rods would have bent before having timing chain issues. The mystery will continue when you have time to dig in a bit deeper with two rich cylinders and a lean code, can't wait to see what you find.
And…. Washing the bearings just like The King! I’m waiting on knock knock knocking on heavens door to start playing.
Officially the earliest I’ve been to one of your videos, and I love every one of them!
Not for nothing, I hate those early LS return style systems. For anything with an LS swap, using an 04+ returnless rail with a corvette filter is the way to go. Next thing I'd do on it is change the oil. Having the intake and cylinders flooded with fuel definitely contaminated the oil. Also, looking at the o2 sensor signals and fuel trims on a scan tool.
He did change oil
Love your videos.
If you don’t intend to keep the Nova I’m sure @Sleeperdude wants one and I think it would be good for both of your channels
You’re getting some good advice down below. Hopefully it’s as simple as an o2 sensor and a couple bad injectors 🤞🏻 Love the 72 Maybe get a walk around video in the future? Gotta get her back on the road! Thank you very much Mr Mortske!
The flooded intake certainly has a new and interesting problem, never time to get bored 😉 I personally like the performance and economy of an LS motor but I seriously hate trying to diagnose them. I was looking through the comments and it looks like you got some solid advise to work from Mortske. The Nova is okay but it's nothing special, put the Worn small block and turbo 350 and should be a fun ride. Enjoy yourself at the wedding and be safe on the road. Great video as always 👍✌️🇺🇲
Check the voltage on your 02 sensors with your scan tool to see if they are good. Those two injectors could be stuck closed. You can put air to them and pulse them with a power probe with the 5v tip. Position one 02 sensors voltage should not be below 200 mV or > 900 mV. Fuel injectors that exceed the 11-14 ohm range are no good according to GM service manual ID# 844159. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the tip!
Helped me.
Good to know.
Was just gonna say this one too
May have been mentioned already, a vacuum gauge will show valve timing and other issues, maybe worth a go...
If the floor boards and trunk are good put a decent engine in it. Fix the rear fender wells. Maybe a budget build with parts list and where to get said parts. Looks sweet can't wait to see this one again on the channel.
Mortske and the Duff dog best way to start my morning!
I love the Lone Star Beer Sign! Another great video from Duff and Mortske
Once I saw the symptoms and the vacuum line filled with fuel, I knew it was the FPR. I've had enough older European and Japanese cars and those always seem to be a problem. So easy for that diaphragm to fail.
So, the part that was half the price of the name brand broke right away? Imagine my shock.
Nova has a ton of potential. The ls fire was true to form. Always entertaining, Mortske. Safe travels
Glad you didn’t hurt that sweet truck, it one of favourite vehicles on your channel!
You might want one of those injector test stands. Maybe one ran dry and scored the inside.
would be a handy tool to have
I would guess an injector or two may be stuck open
I don't get it, Mort. You're such a grumpy old man about flexy hoses, Cragars, and a few other really unimportant things, yet you have this adolescent love for all things LOWERED. Which are highly impractical and harder to work on, and ride like crap. Dual personalities?? 🤣
@@jeffrykopis5468if done correctly lowered vehicles do not ride like crap, and if done with bags, you simply air them up to original height.
Try unplugging the maf and running it without it before you start the parts canon. And maybe get a scanner on there first and foremost. Live data will do wonders
I love your channel, not only for the running gags, but for the chance that something will go badly haywire.
Thanks for the tip on Reggie's window crank. I will be adding a slot and longer set screw to my Unibody pickup door levers to fix the same issue.
Good deal
In most efi applications even with drive by wire you can crank them with the throttle wide open and it’ll go into a “flood mode” and shut off the injectors. I don’t believe the throttle body opens though on drive by wire not sure.
On the truck issue, I’m sure you already know but a vacuum leak can cause lean burn in cases like that. Just a thought. Thanks for the great videos.
we checked for that today, nothing...
Great video. I'm glad you posted keep them coming thanks
Mortske you finally had some good luck i see its running and no rod knocks. Happy for you buddy!
Thanks 👍
I would replace that O2 sensor. Then check the mass air flow sensor. Possibly the injectors on those two cylinders that the plugs were black.
Best video you have done in a long time bud. All action, less talk, and great content in a controlled time frame. Trifecta!!!
On the Nova, if the metal underneath checks out, and it's not too roached, I might go with the better small block instead of the worn out one and the 700R4. On that plate, brought back memories! My ex father-in-law had a 74 Jag 4 door with the V12, and his Cali personalized plate was "awsom12". His daughter was cute and fun for a while, but I would have rather had that Jaguar, probably would have requires less maintenance and cost me less in the long run. LOL! Take care, Mortske! And stop lighting schtuff on fire! Oh, I blew the plastic intake on a 6.0 to smithereens years ago (like 20) when it got towed to my old shop for a no-start. We tried to run the box van it was in into the shop spraying brake cleaner down the intake. Nope. Just destroyed the intake when it sneezed! Too much fun. That was a LOUD explosion, sounded like a shotgun blast!
Great Monday again with Sir Mortske😊
That Nova is really awesome. If you plan to keep it than full LS swap would be interesting with everything else included with it. Your not the first person to get ripped off with cheap parts. They make also fake spark plugs that last less than 200 miles and than your stranded. Most of them are actually made for lawn tractors not for cars. I bet people wanna see you get burned and electrocuted at the same time LOL. Not a LS expert but if the intake filled with gasoline this fast, maybe the return has started to get clogged or there is some serious pressure issues with the injectors. The gas that did not get burned had to run into the intake from somewhere else than that vacuum port.
Yeah put a LS in the nove we need more repair videos. Put a nice small block in it and be done.
That's kinda what I was thinking, clogged return line causing the fuel to flood the intake. But there's still the 2 dry plugs and 2 wet plugs dilemna on the passenger bank. I mean do you have 2 injectors stuck open and 2 stuck closed? I'm anxiously awaiting the fix, gotta know what happened. LOL.
@@michaelpendarvis7814 2 cylinders being full to the brim and engine hydro locked can not be just injectors only. But will be interesting to find out what will be the cause.
Gas is a great lubricant...
It might be a stuck open injector or 2. Worth checking out
Thanks for the sponsorship Mort.
Thank you for the video my man always look forward to seeing them
Mortske Monday! Cowboy Cadillacs and Duff make Mondays great
I think dirt Reynolds needs a cousin for car shows
2 cylinders running lean and 2 running fat on bank 2. You sir either have fuel pressure problem or 2 bad injectors. The 2 running fat is the computer trying to richen bank 2 up. It's doesn't control each individual injector only the bank. Odd that there isn't an injector code but sometimes a stuck injector won't set a code. If we are going to parts cannon it I'd swap out the injectors at least the 4 on bank 2. As I have had a stuck open injector set a lean code due to the computer all but shutting off the other injectors to compensate and then obviously it was lean.
good call
Excellent video Mortske Repair :) also on my oldest brother 2002 GMC Z71 4 door heavy duty 1/2 ton (5/8 ton) 4×4 truck with 5.3 litre V8 Vortec motor doing same thing back 2010 one thing found slit on steal fuel line by fuel filter towards engine also time chain was skip plus worn plus gears , then found Coils packs need replacement plus High Quality Suppression Wires on all 8 cylinders plus spark plugs ! Then H20 on manifolds and O2 sensors need replacement and timing need be put right again! Plus Fuel Injectors need a week later too! Yes truck had lots miles on too and everything work out fine also clear codes too solve truck problems to plus found ground cable pigtail need fix and clean up on connector !
Thanks for the Video Worn out small block for the Nova hopefully it smokes would be perfect.
I’m not done watching the video yet but if you washed the cylinders with gas you probably have no compression and your oil pan is probably full of gas
Get your head out of your ass. Of course there is fuel in the oil. You don’t change the oil in something until you know it’s a runner again.
Probably stuck injectors crushing the compression rings
I finally stopped lurking about and Subscribed! Thanks for the videos.
Welcome aboard!
this is why i like having vehicles with the same engine, it helps you swap out parts during diag with no cost up front lol
Your first fuel pressure test, unless you have a bad schrader in your guage, it should show pressure and hold it. If it bleeds off, youve got a leak. And since so many cylinders had fuel in them, I'd say your pressure regulator went bad, or the injector driver circuit is sticking the injectors open
I have been a shop owner for most of my life and as of late Rock Auto parts have been coming into the shop with continuous failures. I personally do not use their parts. Customers that put the parts on then cost them hundreds to rectify the damage caused by cheap parts.
Honestly it's all parts everywhere. I've owned my own shop as well and now work for one of the big 3 doing dealer parts technical assistance and the amount of new parts failures is insane. Obviously if the manufacturer is getting bad new parts it only trickels down the chain
Agree with Clay... I've had plenty of issues with OE from dealer too, including expensive modules. It's all the manufacturing in China.... yay.
@@CubasAutomotive wouldn't even say that a big factor is the chip shortage and trying to find workarounds to keep parts moving forward. Not to mention that there's not the stock piles of parts like there used to be before COVID so when you are using them as fast as they can be produced there's not a good chance of catching issues during the qc process so anything like machine errors or miscalibrations are getting sent out before they are caught. There's not the delay before shipping there used to be that issues could be caught and the product pulled before it was shipped. Unfortunately I don't see any way to catch up and regain the stock piles quickly as you can only make it so fast without adding new buildings machines and staff witch would mean the price has to go even higher provided that you can find enough good people to even run it all. It's a catch 22 as parts suppliers are like most everything given to the lowest bidder and thus mean that if you are trying to increase your capacity and have to bid higher your not going to be getting the new contract
Fellas, I am hurt bad spinal surgery 15 hours ago, but the outcome will be good.
Asking for a tail wagging from Duff.
Mortske has a calming effect and it helps
best of luck!
I haven't watched for a while but Duff Dog is one handsome devil. Good job not blowing up the place and having the fire suppression towels handy.
That skip when cranking doesn't sound promising 😮
agreed
@MortskeRepair Hope it turns out OK. About 30 years ago I had the local NAPA (you'll love that) sell me a REBUILT water pump after I REQUESTED AND PAID FOR a new one on my '78 Camaro. At high rpm the shaft broke right where the seal rides (grooved from use). Wadded up the fan and clutch and destroyed the shroud and radiator. They replaced all of the parts that they could supply. I was on the hook for the rest.
RAN GOOD right after that though!!! It's amazing how much power the fan and water pump take to drive them!
Part of the problem may have been those red plug wires.
Don't know why I laughed so hard at this 😂
Oooh that Nova is awesome! My cousin (he’s 7 years older than me, and I thought he was just the greatest guy in the world when I was young) had a brown ‘72. He got it in 1991 when I was 13. I didn’t know a whole lot about cars back then. All I knew was that he spent all his spare time (and probably money) working on the car, it was loud and it was a LOT of fun to ride in it. He’s in his early 50s now and has a very successful career as an attorney, and drives an expensive German luxury car. He still talks about that Nova when we get together.
good times!
@@MortskeRepair indeed, brother
That's a bugger about the cowboy caddy , and very few miles . I guess " It is what it is " rings true in some situations . Duff dog loves his rides but is not much on conversation about technical issues , just give him a treat and thank him for his silence . I thank you for the Mortske Monday Video . take care , Don't swear , Till next time , Stuart in Ontario ..
Nice seeing something new in your fleet, a Nova! 😊
Great video hate the cowboy caddy is down but that nova looks clean small block and a clean up your ready to let your mullet flow ! Take care Duff and Sir !
The biggest reason I love the ls platform is the top end if you want to check pushrod just pull the rocker arms and boop rods pullout and you can check lifters without pulling heads!!
Duff is the coolest pet on the internet! Oh yes, Mortske is also cool, but Duff is the real jewel.
Have a good trip Mortske !
Definitely learned something! Thanks for sharing
You bet!
Keystone classics and side pipes on that Nova??? Dang! Mortske is in heaven with that combo 😅
Definitely an odd repair. You’ll get it done now. Good video NICE Nova
To bad about Cowboy, I truly hope it's not real bad. Enjoy your trip 🤠. Thanks 👍 for sharing.
Go all out!! Disc brakes, AC, crate motor!! Hello from The Top of the World Barrow Alaska!!!
Yes! A Nova!!! Cant wait to see this back on the road!!!
Hope you have a good time on your trip.
Thank you, Mortske, for showing us the right way to put out an engine fire. Don't use a fire extinguisher. Instead, get a hokey little blanket and shove your face and hands into the aforementioned fire. Talk about a Chinese fire drill. Mortske just showed us one.
we learn every day round here!
Sorry to hear things went belly up Mr. M, hope you will rebound quickly!
For future reference if you hold the throttle to the floor while cranking it goes into clear flood mode and shuts the injectors off until it fires.
I would definitely take the intake manifold off. I would bet there’s still fuel in there. Also I would monitor your 02 sensors live data and see what they were doing. I would suspect you killed one with all that fuel. You need to clear your fuel trims. Just unplugging the 02s won’t have an immediate result. Easiest way to do that is disconnect the battery for 10 seconds and touch the + and - together. Also something to check is to make sure all your injectors are firing and not hanging open. The pcm controls them by sending a ground. Those cheap swap harnesses are notorious for poor wiring and connectors etc. i have seen an injector ground get shorted to ground and that will hang an injector wide open.
Thanks for the tip!
Seriously, sorry boss. I wouldn’t wish that on anybody. Specially one of my favorite repair guys.
Mass air flow sensor might be the culprit, any fluid can mess them up, had too many problems with them with European cars ( previous owners with them open cool air filters sucking up water) still, as this is gasoline it might evaporate and fix itself 🤞🏼depends if it’s your lucky day. On the other hand if it’s really bad it would have thrown some codes. Take it easy and kick back next couple of days! Thanks for this episode, it hit the spot!
I've seen stuff like that happen before hell it happened to me. It wasn't on an LS engine but it was a Vortec. Wasn't the pressure regulator either I would guess it was probably in the distributor that tells the injectors to fire same setup but different anyway you can bet that Crankcase is full of fuel I probably wouldn't even have tried to start it without dumping all the oil out of it. To each his own that's what I always say Nobody's Perfect and never going to be perfect. I'm just glad that you got her back running.
Thanks for another good one Mortske!
Our pleasure!
Didn’t Sir Thomas work on a Chevy 6 cylinder back in the old shop?
Could definitely see that going into the Nova with a PowerGlide-agree it’s not fancy, but it’ll get the wheels rolling for someone who will have fun with it for reasonable money.
I bet Duff would go for a ride in it! Thanks for the video today; Love The Duff!
My buddy had a green 72 Nova 350 3 on the tree, we rolled it in an at the time empty field and were all lucky enough to walk away thanks to GOD watching over us. He got it fixed afterwards and we went sliding down a steep hill in the rain on 4 bald tires and blew through a stop sign across the intersection. I told him to pull over and let me get out and I never rode in that car with him again.
ouch
1:53 “open the hood?” the look on Duffs face and the sound of crickets, gold
42:59 your Deck Lid is a Boot Lid, and Bonnet is your hood 🇦🇺🤙🏼
and a botte of water is " ahh bawwhawl ah wahhher 😝
Awesome koozie bro! I got mine the other day. It keeps beverages cold for a long time and the magnets are really handy!
It sure is!
That Nova is awesome!
I really hope you do something with it.
It would make a cool build series.
The crickets were right on cue every time it wouldn't start. Lol
Hey Mr Mortske. Please bring that Nova back to life. Always loved that style. I bet you could transform that baby
Sorry that the tow🐷 is acting up. I jumped when the intake started breathing fire! I hope your other viewers can help you come up with a good fix.
Those are outstanding wheels you put on the Nova! It now has that don't f...ool with me boys look. Did you ever hear the story that when GM started selling Novas in Spanish speaking countries, sales were poor. It turned out that "No Va" means doesn't go in Spanish 😂. GM renamed it the Caribe and sales picked right up.
Thanks once again for an excellent, if abbreviated, show this week. I'm getting the popcorn ready for next week!
sure did!
Mortzke Repair! Best show on the internet! (My opinion!)
Nice score on the Nova! Looks soooo much better without the Keystones on it. Looking forward to a future video on that. Thanks for the video, always entertaining!
OUr pleasure!
You got some nice rides!!!as always enjoyed the picture show 😊
thanks!
Another good video Mister Mort sorry to hear about the problems with your truck. With the 72 if the engine is still good in that GMC rip it out put it inside of that thing quick cheap easy don't spend the time LOL save the shop in the process lower the ride a little bit big tires in the back small in the front keep the color just asking Poppy's patina in an undercoat take it to Power Tour 2024
Oh hell yeah!! It's another MULLET MORTSKE MONDAY!!!
The LS woes, I’m sure it’s an easy fix just haven’t figured it out yet. But, it’ll come. That Nova could be a nice ride as long as it’s doesn’t have a lot of rust! Engine, I don’t know, small block, big block?? What ever it is leave it old school, not an LS! Have a great trip & time off! Thanks for the ride, you’ll figure out the Cowboy!
I sold a really nice 74 nova that was the same color. Nice find!
My 99 was similar to that, hard to start. Replaced the pressure regulator still the same, then I replaced crank shaft censor...that fixed my problem
Have a good trip buddy. 💯👍👊
Your idea for the nova sounds good
Next patch/design should be that "I'm a genius! Thumbs up!" pose.
Dang Mortske, I give you crapp on a regular basis, but sorry for the big truck. You'll get it. Good luck with yer trip.
Central California watching
Nova needs a SB that will make it smoke the tires. At least. t359. Those keystones weren’t bad. You could get three cleaned up a few days. And they would still look like poop. Thanks for getting hats. Ordered up today. Reggie’s looking top notch! I’ll admit, little jealous about that one. Look out in Nebraska, one of those girls is bound to try to follow you home. Lol!
Enjoyable video Mortske.
glad to hear it!
sometimes the coil failure may not read on scanner..Check those and put a cheap small block in the nova..Sell it to" puddin" for high $$$..Thanks for the entertainment
Thank you for your APPRECIATION to your subscribers Mortske.
My pleasure!
Great show Lord of Fire!! Lol! Yeah I would put a decent motor In that nova? No need to swap motors again.
You and puddin have the best fires 🔥💥😂
nope, whistlin diesel beat them this week... [x2]
Covered a lot different things today hope you get the square body going that's a nice truck
Thanks 👍
