Assuming nz law is same as Australia, but dash cam will never convict. Here in Australia, dash cam is evidence, but only if the person in charge(Tesla driver) is willing to go to court and testify. Many ppl don't have the time to waste, especially if it's a minor issue. If he is under the influence of drugs, he would got off easy as here in Oz drugs is seen as a handicap, so going to court for the day for what is likely a pointless exercise, alot of ppl choose not to. The insurance side of things is different, but I think Geoff would have ended up paying for his own repairs. Lancer insurance would be voided by any illegal activity (drugs) and he didn't seem the kind of guy to have a classic car collection to sell to pay damages.

This used to happen all the time between Ford and Chevy pickup truck owners. 30 years ago, Chevy had a new king of the road truck, the Z-71. Before that, Ford was always advertising it's tough twin I-beam suspension. Overall, there really wasn't much difference between the toughness of the two brands trucks, but that didn't stop idiot drivers from thousands of individual "competitions" every day. In typical "us vs them" attitude, ford truck drivers would lift up their trucks & add bigger tires to make them look bigger and put "piss on Chevy" stickers on their trucks, and Chevy truck drivers would do exactly the same. They would cut each other off in traffic, and do thousands of passive aggressive things against each other. But when the Z71 Chevy package came out, it empowered the Chevy pickup guys. Those were basically racing trucks from the factory. They were much faster than the Fords, handled better, and it was very easy for them to show those Ford truck drivers "who was boss" in traffic, and they did so... continuously. I was a tree trimmer. My view of trucks was that they were tools, not toys. I didn't put (slightly) bigger mud tires on my truck to show off, I did it because it sucks to get stuck in the mud at the dump. But I didn't jack it up, because work trucks don't need a high load height. I also didn't care about quarter mile acceleration, only about how easily my truck could pull a 16,000 trailer uphill. And I didn't have any stickers on my truck, because it was just a tool, not a toy. But my beat up old work truck still attracted much unwanted attention from dickheads driving Z71 Chevy trucks. They were always trying to "teach me a lesson" and show me that they were my boss. One of them chased me down just like in this video one night but ended up just throwing a dumbbell weight at my truck, trying to break the glass. It only ended up putting a big dent in my truck & the guy happily got away with it. Of course I couldn't chase him down, my old worn out work truck was no match. He sure did teach me a lesson.

Fun fact - although the emergency number in New Zealand is 111, you can actually dial 911 and be connected with emergency services. Years ago they found a lot of kids would dial 911 and not 111 in an emergency, because 911 features so prominently in a lot of US TV shows. So although not the official emergency number, you will get help if you dial 911.

One thing I would like people to keep in mind...
There is nothing that this driver could have done about the angry driver who clearly attempted to murder him with his vehicle (in my opinion). That being said, if this ever happens to any of you, the best thing you can do is remain calm. If someone gets aggressive with you on the road, and starts doing things like tailgating you and driving extremely unsafely, the next best thing you can do in your newfound state of calmness is immediately use your hands free set/nav system to navigate to the nearest police station. Simply pull into the parking lot as if you're going to find a place to park. If he or she follows you, great. If not, you simply park, go inside, explain the situation to the front office clerk or whoever is in the front, ask if you may wait for 10 minutes or so in their waiting room (they'll be happy to oblige) and then you simply leave.
I know that you were probably on a schedule to get somewhere in your car, as is most often the case, but your personal safety is much more important that your obligations are. Or, to put it another way, you can't fulfill your obligations to others if you don't fulfill your obligation to your own safety first. Parking and allowing time for the situation to deescalate (or seeking help) will also allow for you to have time to explain the situation to those you're obligated to, and you may simply then carry on.
Just stay safe out there is all. Nonviolent solutions are always preferable. Cheers!

That doesn't necessarily mean the driver had to pay anything. If you have comprehensive insurance they will always cover damage to your car. They then collect the money from the other drivers insurance without any penalty to you, this means your car and expenses will be covered immediately and you don't have to bother suing or contacting the other drivers insurer.
Note: Comprehensive insurance might be called something else in the US, it covers damage to your car, rather than 'third party' which only covers damage you do to other peoples property. If you are found at fault you still have to pay an excess and have your premium increased.
