- How light can we get an ultralight backpack in PART 1 I to try to match Dan's 2.8kg wild camping kit list for summer use. This will be a three part series where we, 1, try to match him, second part we will try to beat him (and give you ideas - as it's unlikely I'd camp like that) and 3rd part where I pack what I'd possibly take to go as light as possible when the weather is a bit better...

As a septuagenarian who enjoys backpacking over Munros, I have to get as light as I can - apart from my addiction to tea. A stove has to come with me. I bought a Wild Sky Gear Wolf tarp after seeing it on a Wildbeare video and would only use it in the mountains paired with the MLD Event bivouac bag which I bought after seeing it in one of your videos. The Wild Sky Gear pillow is worth considering. I like the fleecy inner for protecting my other gear from the sharp edges of electronicals during the day and it works well as a pillow at night with a pair of trekking trousers inside because it fits into the hood of a PH.D. sleeping bag and stays put. Your video is thought provoking and will probably attract a lot of comments. I’m looking forward to the next instalments.
I use a wild country tent tunnel
This is so interesting and something I love to play with too.😊😊😊
Thank you great to hear 😀
It's always fun to try matching gear load-out weights.
Yes we got more to follow.. ive not made video yet but soon I'll do a 2.5kg one :)
Im out friday night may see you around 😂
Unfortunately I'll be home then but hopefully you have a great trip
3.5 is a great weight
Thank you 😊
Great video Tony! Really good weight to get your pack down to 👌🏻
Thanks Dave more to follow too 😀
great vlog brother... well that taught me a few things..when i trained as a mountain guide i was carrying like 12 kg. im going to start weighing things and see what is needed or not needed. cant wait for the next vlog
Thanks as always Simon
And jet boil
I normally have a 8kg bag tent sleeping bag food 3 litres of water radio first aid kit never use a sleep mat 🤟🤟
'Ard man no bed lol
I'm never cold in sleeping bag not sure why I have an army issue inflatable mat but never use it
Blimey Tony, is that an Outdoor shop?....anything you can sell me cheap?..Dont forget what Andrew Skurka once said!!!!...Savvy??😉😉😉..from that aggravating nuisance 'Up North'..😇😂
What did he say? Nothing for sale its all mine mind I tell ya lol 😆
I usually carry 10 kg including food on my week long trips in the mountains. That is more than I would like to, but I can't shave much off if it's still going to be enjoyable and SAFE.
Absolutely agree this has shaved it beyond where I'd go into mountains unless almost no chance of much rain.
I’m loving those UL videos! And I appreciate you showing what fits inside the HELL pack (as I asked you 😊).
Personally I’m not a tarp guy, I prefer a Mid with inner and I’m curious about next videos, would you be able to fit the solomid XL + inner or maybe duomid + inner?
Maybe the silpoly version because its less bulkier than dcf ones.
Cheers
Haha so it was you 😆 yea very sure they fit
Did you see my Welsh camp last hot summer with this pack and Trailstar plus inner
Yea a tarp is different and realistically only saves a bit
I dont need 3 litres but in summer i normal care an extra 1 litre some places on dartmoor is higher than the rivers or gorges 🤟🤟
I usually get through 6L a day morning esp no rivers near and with dogs
I drink loads tea 😆
And a sawyer
Put one in to match up with the list where possible but not used filter of any sort on dartmoor for 12 years just drink direct other than cooking tea etc
Very true I live on dartmoor im doing a camp Friday night 🤟🤟
Along the vein of this video. What is your lightest stove system, Tony? Do you have a beer-can-pot/ caldera cone syle set up?
Popped community post up with link to one.... yes the TD Sidewinder plus others 😉 but that's my current lightest by TD plus got x boil ...
Nice outdoor shop you got are the spring sales going to start? would like buy 1 get 1 FREE offers again 😁😁
Lol 😀 free laughs offered 😆
And no pillow 😄
Gotta have a pillow 😴 😆
True best night sleep i just use my bag
@ELUSIVEDARTMOOR I think I sleep better out there
Lightweight is good and desirable. But ultra lightweight is not for me. The gear is too expensive and too delicate. Not to mention the fact that it's uncomfortable to sacrifice comfort. It takes all the fun out of the experience! 😞 But I'm looking forward to your lightweight set up, when adding some "want to haves" in your pack as well 😊
Yes I'm looking forward to aee what we end up with lol its a fun joint journey 😄
Yes its not cheap and can be delicate for sure luckily some I've had long time 😀
3.5 kilos is a great weight to carry and if you're comfortable with that setup then Watts not to like 😅 and you wouldn't notice the difference on you're back
Hi Peter great to see you here thanks for watching and commenting :)
Great video Tony. I'm taking a spoon as I don't want to eat my tuna pouches with my fingers 🤣
Reason behind not taking a stove is majority of the long distance trails have plenty of supply points along the routes. I often do take a stove but most of the time it's not needed.
Good effort on getting 3.5kg 👏
Ah gotcha yeah makes sense and the lighter? Ah blisters needle maybe? It was a very interesting and informative challenge and part two we hit 2.5kg. To be edited and list written out. Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂
@TonyHobbs I always have had a mini bic Lighter in my first aid. Have done for years. For how much it weighs it makes more sense to take one. Great for Sanitising a needle if you need to pop a blister.
@wildcamping.lifeuk-channel5091 interesting comment here from daft name 😀 re tarp...
