    There have been a lot of price increases in luxury. But they apply multiple strategies: they start out with an insane profit margin as in you are paying 10 times more than what the product is worth. Any other brand w different branding could sell the exact same product, same packaging for half the money and still make profit.
    But they also repeatedly have been raising prices in increments of 6 to 10% which adds up quickly. the Meteorites went from 25 to 20 grams over a few years and a 20 percent price increase. They usually increase prices with new or renewed product releases, use cheaper packaging where possible, continue to release more expensive limited editions that create FOMO, reduce the amount of product sometimes 50% and reformulate products with cheaper to obtain ingredients that expire quicker under the nonsense of "clean" beauty. And on the prestige end which is more expensive than Tom Ford price increases have been even higher. I've seen plenty luxury channels start complaining about the constant price increases

      Yes the cheaper packaging and less product I have noticed too. Dior used to have metal packaging (I still have some) but nowadays the packaging is much more paired down.

    Always love your tea time chats 💕 They are always so thoughtful. In my experience, cost vs quality is all over the place. You can find really high quality products at incredibly low price points, and you can pay $$$ for terrible quality / things that don’t work for you. But I think the hard part is finding things at a reasonable price that work for you as an individual (skin type, tone, undertone, preferences, etc)! I’ve found plenty of good products at the drug store that just don’t work for me (eg the elf halo glow powder) and everything makeup that I love enough to repurchase is quite high end 😅

    An interesting dupe to see price difference for exact same formula is KVD and Byredo. The first 2 KVD eye palettes after rebrand are made in Italy and identical to the big limited edition Byredo palettes also made in Italy. They look, feel, apply and wear the exact same. You even get some several shade dupes. The KVD are available at half to a quarter of the price of the Byredo

    I’m glad you brought that up because even though I live in the United States, there are now some Indie brands that are charging ridiculous amounts for shipping actually more than it actually cost them to ship and I would rather them raise the price then double a shipping cost for me it’s just a coat of ethics. Like Sydney Grace still charges a flat $4.00 mecari is $3.99. $11.99 for a USA brand to ship in the USA is crazy. I guess I shouldn’t complain

  • @Brilliantnash
    @Brilliantnash Před měsícem +3

    Lovely start of the day. In the end, with all purchases it comes down to the question if you personally are willing to pay the asking price. And all those big brands know how to play the marketing game and like you to believe product X is the best invention since sliced bread and that you are misssing out blabla... Know your preferences and don't fall for FOMO because of so called limited editions. There most probably will be something released in the nearby future that suits your preferences and your wallet better.

    I SOOOO feel you. This is good topic. I live in Finland and we have exactly the same thing. We dont have sephora eather, and all the producs wich come to here are way too expensive to buy because of the fees, VAT etc. If UD naked palet was 30 euros, in here its 57 euros. Thats one reason why we dont get any good "cheap" make up brands in here . There is no point to get like ELF when its so expensive in here. Milani is one good example for that. You get those nice lipstics under 10 dollars in usa , here they are about 17 euros. Moira cosmetics would be nice, but who wanna sell it when its so cheap in usa and here you have to put vat, taxes and other fees top of the price and get some profit it too..and now the coverment desided they gonna get VAT even higher. it was 24 % and now its gonna be 25.5%. No point to be honest.
    i been eyeing blend bunny for long time now, love the colorstorys and layouts of they palets. Also BBB is one what i wanna try. But i have to pay about 61,40e for blend bunny eyeshadow palet in monolith. In they own website , the palet its a bit cheaper, but when you add postage fees the palet going cost 65.85 euros, plus vat, plus taxes top of it (yes, in finland when ever you order out of eu, they put VAT, and taxes top of the item) . all those brand should have they own little warehouse in europe, so they could offer easy buy for people, but small business, no worth it :D i think Beuty bay use to have they own warehouse in germany or so, but not sure if they have it anymore. Or we should have our "make ups sisters" in usa, wich send items to us as a "gift" so we dont have to pay that much :D
    sorry about my english :D

    Hi Maaike, this was an interesting tea time chat. I feel like brands like Dior, Chanel, Estee Lauder or Shiseido have had the same prices for ages while drugstore make up brands have upped their prices, especially L’oreal… With drugstore vs. high end makeup I think it’s all down to personal preferences. For me personally, the only things I feel the difference in are foundations and powders. That’s just my experience. The only drugstore foundation that comes close to my high end/luxury foundations is a Loreal one and even that one is not cheap (for a drugstore). Another thing is Guerlain’s Meteorites powder which for me is worth every cent and it lasts very long so I don’t feel like it’s money wasted. I certainly have some items that I like to have around that happen to be high end just because drugstore versions don’t match, if we’re talking longterm use. The other issue I have with drugstore is that a lot of brands keep discontinuing products, sometimes entire lines, so I don’t see the point in that.
    On another note, I think the difference between cheap/pricey is more obvious in other categories like furniture, some homeware products, bed linens, electronics, etc. so I’m more willing to invest in those things while make-up is secondary. Again, just my experience!
    Have a great Sunday! x

    • @FloatinginDreams
      @FloatinginDreams  Před měsícem +2

      Yes I feel foundation is where you find the true differences. I think that one of the things more affordable brands don't invest in is creating products that can stand the test of time. Luxury brands tend to keep formulas around for longer because their margins are bigger. If a drugstore line is underperforming they can easily cut it and they aren't left with unused product. However, from a consumer perspective it is rubbish as you can't repurchase something by the time you have used up the product.

    I'm okay with paying luxury or indie prices for truly special shades - like Clionadh shadows or Gucci lipsticks - but I refuse to pay those prices for things like mascara, face powder, eyebrow gel... there's plenty of really good formulas at the drugstore so you're just paying extra for branding and packaging there.

    Have you ever tried Minsco, Minning or Luchina for kbeauty? Vast majority of their vids have English subtitles. I know I definitely suggested them to you few times. They do excellent, extremely knowledgeable reviews with beyond detailed formula and colour descriptions and great swatches. And obviously they review all the latest make up and skincare and have for years. Lululand speaks English and lives in Korea. She does specifically lip products and is very helpful as she constantly compares formulas and colours. They are a safe bet.

    Dior, Chanel etc can keep their beauty products from high price increases because their bags and fashion have gone up so steeply. That is where they make their money. By keeping their beauty products more "affordable", they can keep these products for the masses and get profit from volume sales.

  • @exomake_mehorololo
    @exomake_mehorololo Před měsícem +3

    It's odd: a lot of people are more accepting initially of issues the more expensive something is. You are more willing to think and try multiple different ways to make the product work. Instead of the product fitting you, you contort yourself to fit the product. That's rampant in luxury and companies do actually count on this behaviour to sell and encourage it in especially female customers. You don't want to admit making a bad purchase or wasting so much money and want to believe it's worth it. You want to be worthy of the product. You convince yourself something is good if it's not or more exceptional than it is. You see this behaviour daily on YT w channels focused on high end/luxury. A lot of people even get openly hostile and aggressive (which is insane honestly) if anyone suggests lower cost products can be of great or equal quality. I have seen it many times over.
    A lot of products at any price will work if someone just puts a bit more effort into seeing how a product works best. Panning channels are full of examples what difference it makes to just try different ways to make a product work instead of quickly disposing it. It's the same from the cheapest to the most expensive products and in all cases saves you money

      Kiko does great products but not everything is worth it. They do lovely things in their silver packaging. The powder is similar to Hourglass, their Velvet Passion lipsticks are similar to Lisa Eldridge (as are their lip liners) and their eyeliners, cream shadows and eyeshadow sticks outperform many high end and luxury brands (Charlotte Tilbury, Laura Mercier, to just name a few). For blush, bronzer and highlight they also do lovely things (again in the silver packaging) that have been some of the longest standing favorites in my makeup collection.

    I know that for example L'Oreal does a lot of researchs and is publishing good articles (related to skin like about the UVA/UVB and other skin issues, i don't know about makeup) , so it is normal that their products cost much, i buy from them my serums but i will never buy products from influencers for sure, they make their products so expensive when behind there is nothings, and sometimes even the quality is not that great (i saw a few reviews about the kylie cosmetic brand). I prefer to buy something worth the money, also there are a lot of factors, ingredients from poorer countries will cost less than from suppliers from your regions (they also need to get money and live) but for some people that might be important too (like me). I wanted to add that maybe you can keep your lipsticks (but then in comparaison, i don't own as much as you), i sometimes like to put highlighter (the more subtiel ones, the more stronger are for my face) on top of a bullet lipstick (i'm not into liquid but then it may also work) then a gloss so if a color is too strong it may attenuate it (i like it because of the shine but light colors are good on me as bright (not neon) and deep) and if the color is too fade or light, you can put a blush (maybe not all blushes in powder are safe around the mouth but i think the more creamy blushes are) on top. I like to put creamy stuff then a powder to put good in place, the creamy blush will give something really pretty and natural like a real flush on the cheeks (also might be better for mature skin, and by getting older the face produces less oil too), then powder so it stays longer, it will be also be easier to apply gloss on lips (it won't slip too much, with liquid lipsticks it will work great but creamy moisturizing bullet lipsticks are my favorites). I have an oily face by the way

      L'Oreal is actually not just a brand but also one of the biggest beauty companies in the world. They are one of the big five. They own Maybelline, YSL, Urban Decay and many others. I am sure they could do with a less expensive drugstore brand and still make ends meet.

      @@FloatinginDreams but then, there are already so much cheap brands that are good (like essence and catrice, they don't always use fragrance and don't use at all allergens, but then people may still react because of a allergy), they don't really need to do it because after some times the cheap brands will have access to the innovations. If they did, rip to brands like kruidvat etc, they have the money already. Also they have some cheap products in their brands (the more old formula's). For my comment above, in general highlighters in powders are relatively safe around the mouth, for the blushes in powders not that much (creamy blushes i think yes). Then they do a lot of marketing too (they must pay people that works behind these advertisements, kruidvat don't do that, catrice and essence don't too i think (i never saw for them)

      also, maybe more people would buy the cheaper ones, then it could also be a problem. For example, here in belgium in the french speaking parts, people only buy (clothes) in sales and a lot of shops had to close and move (for example to the Flemish part, there they buy) even if their clients really have the money and could buy without sales

    I'am also from Europe and wanted to buy the Ethereal Eyes Pallette from Make-Up by Mario from the German Sephora Website. As the first time it came out it was Sold out rather quickly and i missed out on buying it.
    I wanted to kindly ask you as it's now back in Stock on the German Sephora Website, it's also listed as a Limited Edition Item, is that really true? As in the USA it also came back a second Time as it was so popular, so now i don't know if it's really a Limited Edition item and if i should buy it rather quickly as it might not be available in the Future again??
    Do you think i can wait a bit longer to purchase it or should i buy now and not miss out on it. I have seen mixed Reviews on it some love it and some hate it , cause it has alot of fall out and makes a big mess when applying the shadows.
    I'll be honest 😅 I'am having a bit of FOMO when it comes to this Pallette, but it's so expensive for about 80€ asking myself if it's really worth it..

      It's limited because they only sell X amount of units before it goes out of stock. If it is brought back after that? Who knows, they might, they might not. However, now the brand is in Sephora in the EU, you can buy it from other places if it sells out in Germany too. I feel nowadays brands say something is limited edition to drive sales, so I wouldn't trust them to not bring them back, but it is also a reason to be cautious and budget for it quickly if you really want it.

    You pay for the name. The ingredients where the eyeshadows are made of, are dirt cheap, specially if they use fillers like bismut and talc. I bought the mica etc several times to make eyeshadows myself. Even iridescent, multi-chrome and holographic mica's are not worth the price of a $80,- palette.
