  • Microcosm engineers do it again with a miniaturized version of a model engineers' favourite. Featuring stainless steel and aluminium, great engineered tolerances due to onging improvements in engineering production and an excellent upgrade for Microcosm engines - a fully encapsulated, ultra-micro electronic ignition developed for this engine. New base color too!
Model hit and miss engines are my speciality. In this review I look at the construction, the out of box experience then have a look at some tweaks you might try with your engine. What can you suggest?

Chinese commercial desktop engine models have come so far in the last 6 years. To begin with, the model engineers couldn't get manufacturers to work to fine enough tolerances. Bearings and compression were commonly rubbish, but enthusiasts like me could do the necessary to tweak and patch up...
Fast forward to the 2024 and there are several big names in the Chinese desktop model engineering scene:
Microcosm, with literally dozens of very successful model, who single-handedly started the market by producing the first Chinese cheap hit and miss engine model. Microcosm is unmatched in the variety of models it produces and has always worked to improve quality. M96 is by Microcosm and shows their continued innovation.
Enjomor is another big manufacturer of steam, hot air and vacuum engines who also does a well-known hit and miss, and now multicylinder IC engines. Cison build semi scale v-twins, 4, 6 and 8 cylinder engines.
MUSA ENGINEWORKS have been making a name for themselves in repro classic model engineering engines.

Looks great! I'm even more excited to get mine now! I hope it arrives soon. I'll definitely be checking the latch to see if I got the same early batch you did or if they fixed it already.

I presume you showed this to Jin before posting it on YT....
will he make this latch improvements based on your work ?

Yeah Hi John. I did think seriously about it however they do check every engine runs. I noticed at the end of two runs the latch was not latching see 11:00 because of the 45 degree slope. So...is the slope done by CNC and they're all like that or individually ground and mine was wrong? If the whole batch was done I guess Jin wouild like to know if he doesn't already

I emailed him. I guess he knows already or its a one-off, but it may help him. It was a fun challenge to me so I didn't want apologies or whatever, he'll be busy enough

I know that Jin and the other manufacturers watch these videos and include improvements in their manufacturing each time a new batch of engines is made because I have several similar engines purchased over time and the early ones (from 2020) have issues that were addressed in later runs.

Do you think you can slow it down and/or get a longer miss cycle? Possibly reduce compression and weaker govornor spring?

czcams.com/video/XbGQm47k3As/video.htmlsi=YG09mrUtnzZoXrZh&t=727 see my slower spring. I took it out when fixing the valve latching. More tweaking on the latching could reduce the cam bumping in the miss, and the spring...you have inspired me to try now!! Difficult in ths scale

I'm new at these engines and they are so fascinating. Can you recommend a good H and M to start with. I have been looking at the Retrol HM1. Any thoughts. Thanks Jerry

Welcome to the comments Jerry! Absolutely choose the Retrol Musa HM-01. It's pretty much the pinnacle of Chinese H&M model engineering and likely to give more than one lifetime of service, high quality. I got the base and fuel tank too. You've probably seen my vid on getting the best ouit of that motor czcams.com/video/opSh_U3HnBs/video.htmlsi=w4qhIr0IpGXDiVGt and my general assembly here czcams.com/video/opSh_U3HnBs/video.htmlsi=xb6RtlL7xr45CrKP

Thomas, was that piece you heated a turned a machine error on just this machine , a defect so to say? If you had broken it, could you order a new one. Great video for sure😎

Hey Jerry. I have contacted Jin, he appreciated the feedback and is looking at the engines and trying what I did. Whether it affects all in the batch, It all depends whether this bit of grinding at his factory was mechanised machining or someone on a grinder. Jin is good with parts and if there is a problem with the engines he'll fix it and offer replacements, and future batches will be correct. Looks like engines still run with this defect, but I suspect will begin slipping off the governor step leading to thrashing

I always considered this just an ugly engine as it does not duplicate a particular style.....but, to see how interesting the mechanism is and how it runs now puts it on my list to own at some point. I had the M92 and have an HM-01 on the way.

A beautiful 6cc version model engineer made, really must have worked skilfully to get it like that. Very nice...I'd seen it but I doubt this little flywheel model can runj that slow

I saw that, was momentarily embarrassed, then thought: if it's not ok for my engine mates, who could it be ok for? Surely no-one would be thoughtless enough to point it out? :)
