I make an ''8 Ball'' out of solid Stainless Steel and Brass
Vložit
- čas přidán 11. 09. 2020
- I had this idea since I recently discovered how to easily make balls on the milling machine and lathe. As I currently don't know what to restore next, I decided to make the 8 ball. It was a very cool little project. Very accurate work was needed to get all six individual pieces fit together with no gaps. The hardest part of this project was filming the last few shots, because it is so super shiny now and reflects everything. I really like how it turned out and it will be a nice decoration piece to look at.
I hope you like my work and the video.

I’ve been a job shop machinist for 30 years and have never imagined such a creation. Thumbs up is an extreme understatement.
Tool maker here seen some neat stuff but that’s cool, problem got a money maker there, bet a whole set racked in a frame to hang in a man cave would sell.
@Todd Warmbrodt , nothing boring about this video! Loved every second of it. ;-)
@Todd Warmbrodt I am a wood working hobbyist but I am always fascinated by watching folks work metal. If I had the tools I would love to make a chess set out of different types of metal.
I've made a ball on a cnc. But, the number 8 was sweet!! Way to go!!
Round enough, not like it's going to be anything but a desk ornament. Could have it ground like a ball bearing is made. Would be a cool item for a trophy maker. Might make today's trophies top heavy though.
No music. No annoying intro. No rants. This is wonderful.
Just a nice advert in the middle
It’s German of course it’s like that
Thank you!
Yep, these are the best. I cant watch the ones with the stupid "inspirational" music or that obnoxious dub stuff...
Bruh wtf was the point of making it if he wasn’t gonna use it
I'm a machinist myself, and that is extremely impressive machining my friend.
Just wondering; is there metal that is colored all the way through? I know you can blacken metal with coatings and stuff, but that doesn't seem like it would work in this.
Is there metal that is black/dark all the way through and not just on the surface?
@@TasarranI believe that high carbon steel and cast iron can be pretty dark.
Ditto...see alot of hacks on here where I cringe. Not this time...impressive.
Most cast iron is Black from oils being heated on it
It’s about 12AM and I’m sitting here watching a guy make a sick 8-Ball. I love my life
That was me last night. Then the machete
exactly the same with me man

I've just joined the midnight sick 8-ball making club.
Life is beautiful . Hope the loot lasts .
This might be the simplest and most artistic creation for all mechanics out there!
It's fascinating how the brass almost looks to be translucent when the ball has been polished. Truly beautiful.
Weird hah? Almost as if it is just a ball with a brass colored etch/print on it. Amazingly cool stuff
@@soundwave070 more as though it's a computer effect superimposed onto a physical ball of steel. Still fascinating.
IKR? It looks fake, but I saw it made, step by step...
That would make an awesome shifter handle!
Or the knob at the end of the bolt pull on a 50 cal.
Not in Texas... you'd burn your hand in the summer....
It would make an awesome shifter especially with the weight, I find heavy shift handles make shifting so much smoother.
@@valeyard93 Australia - Smiles knowingly.
Much too heavy
What he did with the 4th axis making the ball more round was so incredibly clever. This guy is the best of the best.
why not just finish it on the lathe, just curious.
I'm just gonna guess personal preference.
The guy who taught me used to machine a complete sphere on a lathe with his hands putting cut on the z axis taking it off on the x axis (no CNC back in them days) followed by filing it then polishing it with emery cloth ,proper old school tradesman over 35 years.
I've started the education for becoming a machinist and this absolutely fired up the passion I already had for this area of crafts. Thank you, I was stunned almost the entire way through
I love how you use the machines you restored for other projects.
Same me too
The blue one
That's right
Yea and I also remember him using that metal cutter thing in other vids
Edit: yea I just checked it’s the 1930s metal shears I’ve seen that one in previous videos
Jeremy Greiss I’ve often thought this to
It is so satisfying that I want to see him make the whole set with the triangle now
MindSET maybe the bluing liquid or spray paint?
@@StellarSurge yeah but you have to be super careful not to damage that thin layer metal
We can't, but I think he can
*I miss the red circle (although I'm used to the measle ball now) &
Is so satisfying I want to get ball like that.
I don’t know how many times I have watched this over the years. It is just mesmerizing.
Looking back at this project, I feel you should do the entire billiard set. Yes it would be a massive undertaking, but the end result would be a great reward.
It would be interesting to play a game with them.
@@tyecad I imagine the balls would just end up with dents in them. Actual billiards I think are made with material less likely to allow dents.
That he chamfered the edges of the “8” interiors only to completely mill them off minutes later is the most my mechanics thing ever.
professionals have standards
Don't forget the "~0.03mm" measurement on 2:00. That's what, 3 micrometers?
@@TheWinjin add one more 0 for micrometers
@@mymechanics so, that's tens of micrometers?
Also, since you've saw my comment and answered me - I'm a huge fan of the videos, and my dad, too.
@@TheWinjin Glad that you're a huge fan of your dad :-)
What i love about his videos, is that he doesn't add annoying repetitive music over it.
Just pure mechanical, metal on metal and woodwork sounds.
Could you be the one I got here from on 9gag?
I know, I hate when the cheesy public domain music drowns out the sounds of the work.
Plus, he doesn't do an annoying narrative that drowns out the awesome sounds of fabricating.
@pencil whip some in his past video.
yes it is better
Vivid sound makes the difference. Still one of the most satisfying YT videos out there. Anyone who has operated a lathe and mill understands.
This is art!

Regardless whether it's "perfectly" spherical or practical for actual pool, it looks absolutely amazing, and it would look incredible on some kind of stand.

the way the"8" is built up and how it looks is simply amazing
this is such a massive flex, the result is absolutely perfect.

In a million years I'd never have guessed that's how they got that 8 on there...
I mean for an actual pool ball it might be different. This is how you'd do it with a lathe and a mill
A million years is a long time
NEVER.
Paint
this makes the balls center of gravity change in a way that the ball is pretty useless now. Not that you would use steel billiard ball anyways.
Insanely impressive machining skills.
This would make an excellent "trophy" for an 8-ball champion.
And in 4,000 years they'll dig it up and wonder how ancient people achieved such marvelous works of craftsmanship.
Thanks for watching, much appreciated
The work of this man will surpass the Ancient Egyptians, who made quite modern surgical instruments for their age.
@@ratsuay I though that was the Greeks (or specifically Galenus). The Ancient Egyptians were known for some pretty crazy stone carving abilities though, there's one statue of a Pharoah carved out of a stone that is second to hardness in diamonds, if I'm remembering all of that correctly and nobody knows how they did it.
And they will do a restoration
They wont because AI will have taken over the World and humans will be incapable of thinking the day is not too far away at all
Magnificent work! Great abstract vision when doing the 8. Many, many, many congratulations!! 👏👏👏

Ive been watching alot of machinist videos lately, and the amount it takes to center everything, zero everything out, making sure theres no wobble... its insane. He doesn't just lock it in the chuck and start cutting, theres faaaarrr more involved and that makes me love this channel even more.
Wonderful creation! Watching this video extended my life expectancy by 35 years; Amen!
Amazing combination of engineering and art.
100 years later, restoring a steel '8 ball'

@@DavidPankarican no dislike from myself, but... the last touches prevent this "ball" from being perfectly spherical, not to mention mass difference between the alloys used, making it a purely decorative object.
@@jmc8583 It was always going to be decorative. No one is going to use a steel 8-ball in real pool game. It probably outweighs the other balls by 5-10x.
