Woodturning - I Maxed Out My Lathe !!
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a large spalted beech log into a beaded vase.
When woodturning a piece like I find it important to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning.
If you find these videos entertaining I’d appreciate you like, share and subscribe.
Thanks for watching.

HEY. Thanks for watching
Tell me below where in the world are you all watching from??
Il kick off.
Northeast England
Wisconsin
France. Merci pour tout ça!
Austria (not where the kangaroos are) 😅
No kangaroos in Austria ??
This is a great wood project book czcams.com/users/postUgkxkPIWb22DigCqxmlXerCyUF4HCl6eSU2L . Most of the projects use the pallet simply as a source of reclaimed wood not as a recognizable pallet so even if you didn't have a pallet you could make these projects with any reclaimed (or even new) wood. The instructions are excellent. The style is charming and would work with lots of different decor. There are quite a number of projects that involve tiling of teh wood pieces which is a really cool idea and can produce beautiful pieces when working with aged wood.
In what way ?
It's fun when you get it slowed down just enough that its rotation is roughly a factor of your camera's FPS, so it looks like the block is standing still while you carve into it :)
Yeah can get some great footage with the correct ratio’s. Hard to do it intentionally though as the lathe speed fluctuates as soon as the chisel makes contact 👍🏻😊😉

I watched the entire video and didn't see that once.. It appeared to stutter or slow down many times, but never looked like it wasn't moving.
It has happened a lot on video’s but I can’t remember specifically which ones. There are some when the wood appears to change direction as well. Similar to a helicopter propellor.
@@JackMackWoodturning rrre~get
It will always amaze me how on earth can this be done, the weight of the wood would scare me never mind working on it. A true peace of art, I realise that it’s not simple to do as you seem to make it look. Well done it’s fantastic.
😂gtw,namaste namaste
Jack, as a new wood turner I watched this many (many) times. I was fascinated in the process of building the tenons and putting it all back together. I have now tried this and managed to get a fairly similar end result but my vase is about 10" shorter than yours. Thanks for the help and now I am confident enough to try some of your other projects and a few of my own originals. I am very much enjoying the world of wood turning!
Great stuff G. Let me know any time if you have any questions. 👍🏻😊

I'm not even into woodworking and yet I'm glad CZcams recommended this. I'm amazed by the 3-dimensional planning needed to turn such a large piece on the lathe. Outstanding craftsmanship! 😎👍
Thanks M. Glad you enjoyed it buddy. Merry Christmas 🎅 😊
With as many cross sections you did, I expected a more varied grain pattern in the end, but this project came out awesome all the same. I love watching you use your skew, because that is one lathe chisel I was never able to use effectively back when I was a "junior high aged master lathesman" (age adjusted of course). After clearing the bulk of material with my gouge, my go to for smoothing, even on a straight run, was the roundnose. My instructor was amazed at the smooth lines I could maintain with the roundnose and called me the most skilled tool man he had ever seen, and then laughed at me for not being able to effectively use the proper tool for the job...a skew lol. I have not turned a piece of wood in almost 40 years, but this brought back a lot of fond memories of all the lamps, bowls and other things I made in my early teens.
It sounds to me like you need to get a small lathe and get that skew Chile’s locked down vince. 😊.. what about it did you struggle with?

I was so confused when you cut it but I guess you just gotta trust the process cause it looks amazing!

At first, I was thinking it would be an oversized goblet...ho hum...THEN POW 💥 it turns into a STUNNING articulated vase with one of the best wood figures I have ever seen!!!!! Superb visionary craftsmanship!!! 👏👏👏
Thank you. Do you do any woodworking?
Jack, no sadly, I do not turn wood. I’m just a wanna-be turner. Love watching the art being worked though 😃
This is beautiful. A real piece of art. 😊
Great idea, each vase is a work of art 👍😀
There’s something mesmerising about the sight and sounds of the art of woodturning on a lathe - especially wet wood and sharp tools, as a kid I would sit and watch my dad turn for hours and once I learned I really enjoyed the process - it scratches an itch for me
Nice one man! What sort of pieces are you making?

Haha thanks Dan. Much appreciated buddy 👊😊😉

It’s an honour to watch a master craftsman at work.
Thank you!
From the U.K.
Stunning result from what I initially thought was a video on how to chisel a huge log into shavings! Awesome to watch for a layman.
Nice one T. Glad you enjoyed it man 👍🏻😊😉
That is one amazing vase! I really admire the way you sectioned it off, to hollow it, and then put it all back together, to finish it. Thanks for the lesson on how to turn enormous objects!
No probs Steph. Thanks for watching 😊😉👍🏻
Parabéns. grande artista. Eu fui torneiro mecãnico durante 57 anos, não maquinava madeira mas sim... aço e outros materiais ferrosos. Mais uma vez parabéns, Um abraço. Gostei muito do seu trabalho.
Amazing, it just fascinates me to watch this kind of work.
Washington State, USA... as someone who’s barely dabbled on a lathe in the past, I have great respect for your skills & craftsmanship. That’s a beautiful piece of artwork right there 🍻
Thanks Scott. Glad you enjoyed it buddy 👍🏻😊😉
Россия, Краснодар. Как человек, который никогда не работал на токарном станке, я вообще в восторге)
Beading the vase not only looks great, it also makes the joints where it was put back together after being hollowed out practically unnoticeable! Amazing work!!
You got it frog 👍🏻 thanks for watching 😉

Forgive my ignorance, but is it skill that allows you to have the spacing of the beading consistent along the length of the piece? I didn't see any markings.
The marking is done by the forming of the bead, in that one begins whet the other left off. Dose that make sense?
I've done some wood turning...but nothing like this. This guy knows his stuff! Brilliant workmanship!
Nice one DJ. Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻😊
That's beautiful! 😊
A work of art, I like the unique grain patterns.
Very well done.
Cheers V. Much appreciated 👍🏻😊😉
Wood turning is so magical.
This piece kept on reminding me of the CPU in the original TRON; the way that it spins until the rotation matches the frame rate, and the pattern in the wood appears to become stationary.
Yeah nice! Have you seen the new one?
i have was a really good movie better than I thought it would be
My first time EVER seeing anything like this. I’m intrigued and just amazed. Again I’ve NEVER seen anything like this. Astounding.🥰
Cheers for stopping by Lisa. Have you watched any of my other videos? I feel if you like this you’ll like my others 👍🏻
incredible work. I can't imagine turning something like this! Watching you from Atlanta, GA, USA.
Absolutely gorgeous! It's beautiful. I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy these videos. I love woodworking, though never had a skill for it. I like the fact that you don't have music or voice, just the beauty and magic of the turning. Thank you.
Thank you. I’m really thrilled you enjoy my videos so much. Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻

Beautiful grain on this project, you done good. 👍
Really well done! I liked it a lot more without all the bands but that's just personal preference but all in all really nice work
Thanks D. The beading was to disguise the seams 👍🏻😊
Yeah, that was a really aesthetically pleasing wood pattern...
Beautiful. I was devastated and lost when you segmented it, but it turned out amazing and segmenting it was so smart. I turned wood (small pieces, still learning) for a short time when I was in high school but gave it up when my mentor died. I loved it, but wouldn't even know where to begin again at this point (almost 20 years later).
Get a lathe . Get stuck in . Life is short. Why spend it NOT turning wood 🤙🏻😎
Same here. Last time was high school shop in 98. Just got a lathe, getting back to it. Do it man, you won't regret it, but you might regret not doing it.
Great advice Calvin 👍🏻
WOW !!!! That work left me speechless . I can only wish that I would someday be able to do work like that . Thank You for sharing with us all .
Quite literally monumental. Very relaxing.
That's a huge log!
The cutting tool makes an awesome sound when sculpting this work of art.
Love the ribbons of wood that flies off as your cutting each layer.
Looks like you got quite the workout with this piece!
Beautiful work!
Thank you. All the hard work was before the video. Lot of effort just getting it to the workshop and up onto the lathe. Il not be doing another this size any time soon 🤣

Your work is always fascinating to watch; and I am always surprised by your end product! I would never have the temerity to attempt what you take on & seemingly perfect so easily. Well done! Love both the design and the grain!

I think you've outdone yourself on this one. The beading makes it appear woven only more beautiful. I liked the whomping willow, much more before you painted it; I'm glad to see you make this one natural. I'd be interested in know where it ends up. Thanks for sharing.
Howdy EG. It has ended up living at the workshop. No cracks as of yet and I am hopeful it will remain intact. The walls are thin and even and it is drying very slowly. 😉👍🏻
