- Folk group "Vilkači" (werewolfs) wearing reconstructed Bronze Age Baltic costumes is performing an old Latvian war folk song traditionally sung by men. Folkloras kopa Vilkači dzied vecu kara dziesmu
Māmiņ vaicā sav dēliņu:
Kam pucēji kumeliņ;
Kam pucēji kumeliņu,
Kam mauc zelta gredzentiņ?
Vai tu jās pie tautu meitas,
Tautu meitu bildināt,
Tautu meitu bildināti,
Uz nākošu rudentiņ?
Māmiņ tautās vis nejāšu,
Bet uz citu tālu viet;
Bet uz citu tālu vietu,
Tāli, tāli svešumā.
Jāšu es uz turku zemi,
Tur ar turkiem izkauties.
TRANSLATION OF THE LYRICS:
Dear mother is asking her son: why are you saddling the horse?
Why are you saddling the horse and putting the golden rings on it?
Will you be riding to the maiden to propose to her?
To propose to her on the forthcomming autumn?
- Dear mother, I will not be riding to propose.
I will go to another faraway place, far in the foreign land
I will be riding to the land of Turks, to fight with them
DAINOS ŽODŽIAI:
Motinėlė klausia savo sūnelio: kam balnoji žirgelį?
Kam balnoji žirgelį, kam mauni aukso žiedus?
Ar tu josi prie mergelės, jos kalbinti?
Mergelės kalbinti ateinančiam rudeniui?
Motinėle, pirštis išvis nejosiu, josiu į kitą tolimą vietą
Bet į kitą tolimą vietą, toli, toli svečioje žemėje
Josiu aš į turkų žemę, ten su turkais kautis

As a Polish person, though Latvian and Polish are EXTREMELY different from each other (just like Chinese is totally different to Japanese), I can still notice 2 words in this Latvian song which are similar to Polish, one is "zemi" for land, in Polish we say "Zemia", so very similar, also means "Land". And the other Latvian word "Tāli" (far away) is similar to the Polish "dalej", which means "farther away". So there, 2 similarities found. But otherwise, everything else is pretty much completely different. Polish is a Slavic language, Latvian is a Baltic language. I'm guessing that Latvian has "Middle Low German" influences too due to the medieval "Hanseatic League" trade route from the medieval times, which also stretched to Latvia, so Latvians I think borrowed words from "Middle Low German" if I'm not mistaken? Still I like the Baltic Languages, very nice sounding, though I understand very little!
There are many more like zelta - gold
Mamin-mother(dunno the case)
And I am Serbian and can basically understand the sentence "Jāšu es uz turku zemi" I am riding to the land of the Turks, or as we could say in Serbian "Jašem u tursku zemlju"
@@markoj.7675 In Polish, it would be: "Jadę do tureckiej ziemi" (you could technically also add Polish word "jusz" after "jadę", which more or less means "now", but that would ruin the rhythm of the song). By the way, whenever you have an "i" letter after "Z" (I forgot to add another "i" in the original comment, very important, it is placed after the regular "z" in "ziemi"), then the "z" sound in Polish changes into a Polish "ź" sound, and whenever you have an "i" after "S", the "s" becomes exactly like the "ś" in "świat"- which means "world". That's why the "Z" in "Ziemi" is pronounced as a Polish "ź", because of the additional "i", and also an "i" after "c" letter becomes a "ć" too, like the Polish word "ciebie" (accusative of "you" personal pronoun).
And any time you have a "sz" or "cz" combination in Polish, those sounds become like a bit like "sh" and "ch" respectively, but much softer even. Polish is a bit different from the rest of the Slavic languages, in that the pronunciation is more "relaxed" and "wide", because in places where other Slavic languages might have more regular "s" and "c" and "z", Polish replaces those with ć, ś, ź, sz, and cz, making Polish sometimes difficult to understand for other Slavic speakers.
There is no "zelta" or "Mamin" in Polish though, maybe in Serbian for all I know. There is regular form of "mama" for "mother" in Polish, or you could have "mamo" too (when you are formally addressing her), or even you could have the very rare "mamuniu" (when you are addressing her, but in a cute mushy diminutive way). For "gold'", you say "złoto", and "yellow" would be "żółty kolor", and "green" would be "zielony kolor".
As Latvian yes, Latvian does have some germanic influence to it, but also Russian influence due to the USSR. Some words in Latvian language were completely made new in resistance movements back then since it was forbidden to speak in Latvian for years during that regime. If you have any more further questions, I'm up for discussion bro!
Both languages are Eastern Indo-European

@Kartal Yiğit Well they would be your ancestors who where sold in to slavery not ours, ours are the ones who never failed.
I think a more likely explenation would be the urgalic peoples like the magyars.
@@gunarsmiezis9321 Isn't it also common among Siberians and to a lesser degree, among Central Asians? Various Turkic groups have varying origins, perhaps the Oghuz Turks had a greater connection to Siberia in their roots. It seems to be most common in southwestern Anatolia where i live, natives of this area are largely of Yörük descent, nomads. Asiatic features are not so uncommon.
Well. This is a beautiful song. As a person who feels that Baltic states are way more close to us due to the similiarity between their pre-islamic and pre-christian religions.
I can say I am a history geek. I can explain everything in many historical events without watching Kings&Generals (K&G ROCKS! Love them) And as far as I know there was no problem with Latvians between Turks... Maybe its referring the Crusades?
PS: I would not recommend dear beautiful Latvian people to saddle their horses, putting golden rings on it, and go faraway faraway country of 𐱅𐰇𐰼𐰴 's to fight them. Because in this case, may your god forgive you... Because we will not.
This song is likely from the times of Russo-Turkish wars in which Latvian people were forced to participate because at that time Latvia was occupied by the Russian Empire: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Russo-Turkish_wars
I am glad that you feel connection to the pre-Islamic ways of your ancestors. Abrahamic religions have erased so much of their identity but not all is lost as long as there are still people who cherrish the ancient ways of our forebears.
why would a person from the Balkan be fighting WITH the Turks
+Tiger Claw252 This song isn't from Balkans, it's from the eastern shore of the Baltic sea - far up North from the Balkans. The Balts (Lithuanians & Latvians) were occupied by Tsarist Russia at some point and young Baltic men were forcibly drafted by Russians to fight on their side during the Russo-Turkish wars.
Sorry I meant to say Baltic my Auto correct change it i do know their is a difference
aahhh that makes sense
It is a bit of a far fetch, but I was taught in school that it's very possible pagan Latvians (before Tsarist times, since Latvians are somewhat de facto pagan) would go off to war as far as Turkey. Their ships were much alike those of Scandinavian vikings and could navigate narrow waterways (rivers, and the such) and arguably could be transported over land even using a rolling log method (put a bunch of logs next to each other with the boat on top and and roll forward, moving the previous log to the front) Also, archaeologists have found Roman imperial coinage
and trinkets in Latvia, which just proves to show that even way back in the day, people still found a way to cross vast distances, so it's not too far out there of an concept
Fuck the Tsar

Latvians have folk songs that are completely about Turks but most Turks are not even aware of existence of Latvia and Latvians...
Anyways, cool song.
Well how many turkish songs are about the Russian Empires soldiers, some of them where latvji.
Pretty sure that they are singing about Turkics such as the Tatars, not Turks.
Latvians fighting Turks? In the Bronse Age? Are you mad or something??
Er... Where has anyone written that this song is from the Bronze Age? The costumes this folk group is wearing are reconstructed according to Bronze Age material. However, the song is more recent than that (though it's also drawing upon earlier influences) and nobody was claiming otherwise AFAIK.
@@Balticfolk If it's totally irrelevant to the song why then have you made a point of their garb and its supposed authenticity?? Bronse Age my as/... /! ... As to the song itself it can't be very old. No older in fact than 19 century - since Latvians never fought against Turks other than under Russian command and the draft of Latvians was introduces only in 1797 ...
This is a video, not merely some audio recording, isn't it? Why wouldn't I describe in detail what this video contains then.
FYI 1797 is 18th century rather than 19th.
@@BalticfolkYou're not supposed to know Russian history so FYI I'll remind you that by 1797 Russia wasn't at war with Turkey - and wouldn't be untill 1806. Which is definitely 19 cent.
