- Novēlam lustīgi nosvinēt Jāņus!
Ozoliņi, ozoliņi,
Tavu lielu resnumiņu:
Trīs dieniņas saule teka,
Nevarēja aptecēti.
Ozoliņi, ozoliņi,
Tavu lielu kuplumiņu:
Trīs dieniņas irbe teka,
Nevarēja aptecēti.
Ozoliņi, ozoliņi,
Tavu lielu diženumu:
Meitas nāca dziedādamas,
Vainagiemi zarus lauzti.
Ozoliņi, ozoliņi,
Tavu lielu vecumiņu:
Es piedzimu, tev atradu,
Es nomiršu tu paliksi.
Sanākati, Jāņa bērni,
Zem kuplāi ozoliņa;
Zem kuplāi ozoliņa,
Tur Jānīša goda vieta.

This song is praising oak trees - one of the symbols of musculinity in Latvian folklore. During the summer solstice (Jāņi) men (especially those named Jānis) will wear crowns made from oak leaves. The lyrics are about how mighty, powerful and old the oak tree is. 😊
ligla (łigła) means oak?
@@romekKR "līgo" is basically a connective. Most summer solstice songs have "līgo" in the end of every line of the lyrics. The meaning of the word is a bit blurry - some say it means "to sway", but not really and it's almost impossible to explain.
Oak = ozols. Ozoliņš is a diminutive form of the word. :)
Thanks for the information about the song. Sounds lovely
Thank you!
@Kolnu Andrius That is a really beautiful version with a beautifully filmed and edited video.
Before the lyrics, I’ll try to explain a few words:
Līgo - sway (name of the first day of Midsummer)
Jānis - Diety of fire (name of the second day of Midsummer) (just in plural - Jāņi)
Oak tree, oak tree,
Your big width,
Three days sun came,
Yet couldn’t come.
Oak tree, oak tree,
Your big bushiness,
Three days Partridge came,
Yet couldn’t come.
Oak tree, oak tree,
Your big greatness,
Daughters/Girls came singing,
While breaking branches for the flowers crowns.
Oak tree, oak tree,
Your big eld,
I was born, found you,
I will die, you will stay.
Gather along children of Jānis,
Under the bushy oak tree,
Under the bushy oak tree,
There’s the Jānis’ place of honor.
Thank you!
Thank you I am a Bard and this song is wonderful.
"I will die and you will stay" touches me deeply. There is an oak tree blight in Northern California. I have lost one of my two 30-year oak trees and the other is dying. I did not think I would live to see them go, and I have not said this to anyone else how sad and wrong this feels. I hope you understand. Thank you for the translation.
Obrigada lindíssimo
❤❤❤❤Belíssimo!!! Lindo e Maravilhoso! Agradeço por compartilhar a letra da música!!! Excelente trabalho. Sou d Sul d Brasil. Imigrantes europeus trouxeram sementes de Carvalho. E hoje tem um enorme na casa de minha mãe!!

Spēks ,enerģija, brīvība, dzimta!
There are so few European pagan traditions that have been preserved. I love seeing, and hearing this. Such a simple song so beautifully arranged and performed.
That is food for the soul!
What a wonderful, beautiful surprise. Love and peace from Glasgow💖
Magnificent!
Why the hell I am crying now? ! Out of nowhere. I swear I hear this song for the first time EVER. I do not even know the language. Absolutely beautiful. Pure magic. Greetings from Poland.
Me too!
@Denise Bond you really are an uncultured person. BLM isnt an invasion, as far as history proves the invasion came from Europeans being arrogant and taking everything from people of color. Your little comment just makes you sound stupid and racist....two traits that often come together.
The song brings tears to your eyes because your soul cries out for meaning in this Dark World there is no way out except for in we must worship all living Souls excluding none I worship you my friend thank you for your heart the mother goddess hears your cries
Lubystka, I was the same way and I don't even live in Polska, but my Dad's family came from Poland.
I am the son of two of the WW2 Home Army, who chose exile in America rather than death at the hands of the Soviet Army secret police - it's our genetic memories, that are weeping. Our Ancestors are calling to us, reminding us of what we once were - free and pagan and one with the Earth and all Nature. Look at 2000 years of separation from that connection to Mother Earth and the love and lore of our Ancestors has done to us. Look at the hate that rules so many hearts, in a nation who's religion supposedly follows the Prince of Peace. Your heart and soul are right to weep.
Greetings from Philippines.
Beautiful people, beautiful song, and beautiful tradition!
One of the things I love about this song, is how all of the generations are represented and sing their parts.
I see the maidens, mothers and crones personally but maybe I’m reading too much into it. Is it my imagination or do the women’s garlands symbolize the stages of a woman’s life?
I was privileged to work in Riga for over 2 years...the Latvians are very special people....polite, tolerant, strong...yeah the soviets couldn't break them, just like the mighty oak... bless them all
I have taught my children about almost all the countries in Europe this school year. We listen to traditional music of each country with the lessons. Latvia is my absolute favorite. They still have their culture and their traditional music is still being recorded, and very artistic! This has so much feeling. It really spoke to my soul and my children as well. The world needs more music like this!
So happy to hear of like minded mom's!
You're doing a great job teaching your kids about our traditions. Latvian folk tradition offers a peek into our common European heritage, to the days all slavs, celts, germanics, etc, worshiped nature and ancestor spirits. None must ever forget we Indo-Europeans are all brothers and sisters.
@@user-rd3rf3ft8e thank you so much and that's a beautiful comment. I think those shared roots we have are perhaps why so many feel so strongly about this music. It's in our blood!
💜❤🤍
@@rebeccacampbell585 There is a lovely Serbian Easter song called Hristos Voskrese. Schoolchildren and many famous Serbian singers contributed to the video. It has a similar 'feel' to this Latvian song, in my opinion. You might like it. Glad, also, to see Otavo Yo have commented on this. My ten year old, English, daughter loves their music.
@@robertperesvyet804 I will look for it, thank you
OH BEAUTIFUL SONG!
I loooooove it 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
I'm Mexican, and immediately I felt something warm inside me when I started listening to this song. The music, the trees, the people, everything it's so beautiful.
Uh la la... you immediately felt some thing warm inside you while listening to a song about strong oak trees.. haha.. too much info.. i hope you did enjoy it

Sacred and wonderous
As an American descendant of Scots, Irish and German ancestors, I love how the folk music of so many countries shows our connections -- the praise of the people for the gifts of nature, raising our voices together, the common instruments of drums, and bagpipes, whistles and dulcimers! Thank you for this beautiful sharing of your culture that resonates so much, and shows we have so much more that connects us than separates us. We need so much more awareness of this beauty and connection today!
You’re an American. Why do Americans do this? Lol
@@QuantumSorceress I'm not sure I understand your reply. What is it that "us Americans" -- a rather global, judgmental statement -- do? I am an American, and I admire the music of this group. It reminds me in many ways of much of the ancient music of the world, in the instruments, the connection with nature, the joy. Is that somehow a negative comment? Because it wasn't intended to be. I loved this music and my intention was to honor it. Can you help me understand what it is that "us Americans do?
Beautiful, wish we still had heritage including all ages part of our lives here in the UK.
Heritage is kept by humans like you. You can't ask others to keep something a heritage for you. You must keep it for yourself.
@@aris1188 All my life I have kept my heritage and that of my children however in the UK there I has been very little opportunity to celebrate this together with others of all ages. Music is one of the ways we can connect but many of our historical practices have not been carried on and celebrated. I am very proud of my mixed heritage and always give thanks to my family and our history. I'm just saddened that so many do not.
Beautiful, peaceful artists of all ages, making the world a better place and praising the gorgeous oak trees that we love! What a wonderful musical community!
I'm glad the oak trees are happy.
Выдатнае відэа, прыемная музыка, прыгожыя сьветлыя людзі. Дзякуй вялізны за вашую справу і зычу Вам усяго найлепшага!

Magnificent! You can feel the praising of nature without understanding the language. You really feel the force of the oak trees expressed through the voices. I'm completely enchanted ❤
💯 👍
I bet the trees love this !!! ❤
@DeirdreB-fu1qb They do! Many research experiments concluded that trees and other plants are able to perceive benevolent human interaction and they respond positively to it. 🌳 💚
Hello from Chicago, USA- - - - thank you for sharing your beautiful culture......the music, costumes and especially
your innocent children are so very beautiful. There's no better love and inspiration than merging with Mother

What beautiful and colossal oaks are there! Unreal!

Anyone from the Philippines? I love this so much.
glad to know u like it!
Thank you from Austria!!
Wow all generations and the big very old trees it's all so beautiful 🤗💖
This is how I see the future generations , going back to our roots and caring for the earth and all that's there in .
That would be the best thing to happen...let us dream it into being.
That will only happen if the technology allows it. If we dont have enough clean green tech, then nothing will change. Humans are nothing more than parasites.
that is our wonderful reality - not all people are like Trump. .

Praise Beautiful Nature! God bless and protect Earth, we pray.
Love the serenity this music brings me. Love the new versions of some of the ancient instruments.
My daughter sent this to me and said "Heaven would sound like this to my mother" She is right. My birthday is June 23 and that is when this celebration takes place. I can't stop watching--I want to turn slowly without effort and sing with them.
Coming across this song on CZcams was like turning a corner and stumbling into a world I never suspected existed. Now I want to step into the screen and live inside this song. Amazing.
You can. In June we celebrate the midsummer. You are welcome to experience it. In the baltic states we are considered pagan. And we love our culture. June 23 is the day we celebrate.

I want to write you this poem by Nezahualcóyotl.
Oye un canto en mi corazón:
me pongo a llorar,
me lleno de dolor:
nos vamos entre flores,
hemos de dejar esta Tierra:
¡estamos prestados unos a otros:
iremos a la casa del Sol!
“Hear a song in my heart:
I start to cry,
I am filled with pain:
we go among flowers,
we must leave this Earth:
we are loaned to each other:
we will go to the house of the Sun!”
