Thank you so much for this video. Cold day here in Virginia, got out of work, start the vehicle and bam Service Engine Light comes on. I did exactly what you did and started into a rant. Glad I found this video. Going to have it checked out and hopefully it's a simple fix.
Maggie A No worries, sorry you are going through that (I know it sucks) it's not a big repair but mentally it's challenging when you are going through it. Stay Encouraged, it should go pretty smooth ☺✌
My brother in Christ thank you I just received the 2017 Jeep renegade and I had no clue what was going on with my engine after doing an oil change. It's still under warranty with the company I got it from and I'm going to take it into the shop sometime this week to figure it out 🙌🏾
Thank you that is what happened with my jeep it was in a cold day snow where starting and my check engine light came on and my 4wd is not working like you said thank you so much for sharing your video now I'm feeling ok now
Had this problem yesterday on a cold day and it's in the dealership now being looked at. Hopefully this is the problem and nothing major. Thanks for sharing.
I have a 2016 renegade also. The same thing has happened to me 5 days ago. I'm in Houston and the weather like the rest of the country has been unusual being really cold and that is when the light popped up.
This is so weird. I also live in Houston (err, in the suburbs, outside of the loop) and I have a 2015 Renegade and my light just came on for the same reason about 5 days ago.
Same. Co stantly comes on and dealer resets it. Think I will buy that reader and keep resetting it. I did get the P0013 air intake temp sensor from auto zone but dealer didn't show it. Yeah, loss of 4x4 capability turned off is an issue. Anyone have a link to simple obd tool that resets the codes?
I got a problem with my Jeep Renegade 2016 I got it parking sensor. Crows stop the lights brake service chicken G lies open coming up The Brick talking sensor when I parking is not easy when I push button down also when I turn it on song two for my car and I really want before it is working but Now isn't working I'm really confused please I need help
That’s insane that you loose the ability of 4wd because of a thermostat. That makes about as much sense as not being able to put your seatbelt on because you don’t have 4 passengers.
It's some sort of failsafe Jeep put in place for whatever reason. If the check engine light is on, it won't go into four wheel drive. It's dumb as hell, but it's how they did it.
It rather makes sense mechanically. Engaging 4WD will add even more strain to the drivetrain increasing the amount of heat produced. The thermostat on these are powered actually. They open and close by the ECM, however when they "fail" they work passively like a standard thermostat or should work like that. The thermostat looks like it's built into it's housing so unlike old thermostats that was just a thermostat this one is a part with thermostat, housing, and coolant line connections. All I can say in the end is powered thermostats are a result of EPA which made manufacturers develop ways to rapidly warm up the engine and keep it in the most ideal temperature to run cleaner. Unlike old thermostats which pop open and close at a wider temperature range the ECM will have more control over engine temperature. So more complex.
i need help starting a 2016 jeep renegade, it is crashed and the dash lights don't turn on i need this to program a new key except this, is there any way to start it without a key? I also tried to buy a new key but it seems that the body control is damaged and does not make the parking lights come on when buying a new body control, would I need to program it for my car especially?
Hey Wendy, I am not sure about your issues, I would google it and/or take it to the dealership.. maybe some else can comment if they have experience with this issue.. sorry you are going through this
@Popeyes this issue was a bad thermostat that had to be replaced, it was under warranty but would have cost 200-300 dollars if you didn't have a warranty
So mine just came on so if I drive it it won't hurt it instill Monday when I get it In? Check engine light, and service engine light, I have no air conditioning and none of the buttons are working?
This just happened to me. I have the same year and model. I didn't take it in, but I just took the ground cable off and it reset. We have had cold weather (-10) and now we almost hit 30s. How much was it to replace the themostat? I'm going to take it in if it does come on again.
Matt Tufto no problem, the biggest headache is waiting in the dealership for them to repair it. At the dealership I went to, it took all day even though it was only about an hour job
iasnaredrm88 I took the ground post off the battery. Not sure how to explain it. Might be better to Google it. FYI it was only a short term fix my light came on. I have an appt Monday.
It just happened to me a couple days ago but at the same time the light for my air condition and the light for my rear defrost wouldn't go off even when the car was off
Same experience happened to me. But they said, come back when the light goes on again. Mo Fo's.. just didn't want to deal with it that day. Light came back on. Snow storm. No employees show up... have to make an appointment. Ugh...
My mechanic Says cold weather can cause and then it will be fine but then said if it keeps doing it, he'd replace thermostat... how annoying disables the factory remote start too.. I do hope this isn't the beginning of the nickel and diming! He explained it with mine anyway the engine is running cold around 160.. and reading more on it, can cause engine wear and less fuel mileage which I have noticed for awhile now. I never get what they say I should get with it.
I love mine too.. and I hope I get that many miles on mine only 75K at moment! Do you have the my sky? Mine is equipped with that sunroof or NO roof! Love that in the summer! @@inspirationalnomad
Ah just saw the coil happened to you this week past week! $300 was a good price though it's crazy how easy it is to swap out the ignition coil on your own for the price of the part ($55). I had to pay $620 for ONE coil and 4 plugs. Dealership was a total rip off even after talking them down. Also just a note as you've mentioned it in both videos, if the check engine light is on, the 4WD system won't function as a precaution until its resolved (unless you were in 4WD when it happened, then it may stay on). My 2016 is just crossing over 50k. Really not looking forward to any other issues but I think these Renegades are doomed! Good luck to us
As of a few weeks ago, I now get random "Service Airbag" and "Service Parking Brake" warnings and lights, which after googling is another common problem and has to do with a fault in the passenger seat buckle sensor. These cars are the absolute worst.
iasnaredrm88 Hello, yes it "should" be, I drove mine for about 2 weeks before the dealer could fix it.. the engine thermostat value should fail open and allow for coolant to continue to run through the engine, the only issue should be you lose 4WD capability until the issue is resolved. Hang in there, I know it sucks ☺✌
My repair was covered under warranty as my Jeep was still fairly new at the time, if your warranty was up I would estimate between $200-$400 but you would need to verify that
I have a 2015 Jeep Renegade and my service engine light came on. I didn’t notice any drivability issues. Turns out the cooling fan had seized up. I took it to a small business auto repair, and they fixed it. However, they can’t reset the service engine light. They said it clears and then comes right back on. They checked it over again and everything was okay. They said that if the vehicle isn’t serviced by a dealer with a factory part, you can’t clear the light. So, my light is still on but they assure me everything is okay. Fingers crossed. Has anyone ever heard anything like this?
yep, just one more idiotic design feature; loose 4x4 if you have a check engine light. Running light out = no 4x4. I carry an obd reader in the trailhawk, note the code, wipe the code if need to have 4x and is good long enough to get up the hill to the shop.

Yup, just dug out my obd scanner and its p0128 thermostat
It also disables remote start.

Mine is in the dealership today. I'm hoping its nothing major. Glad I bought the extended warranty because the manufacturer warranty had just ran out.
Thanks for sharing your experience

I just paid over $700. For new thermostat. Talk about rip off.

Thanks for the info tho didn't have that issue on mine, A good CEL reader can be had for $20 on ebay.

Matt Tufto Hey Matt, it was under warranty at the time so it was free for me. I would estimate $150 to $200
Okay I am still under warranty too. Just curious. Thank you.
Matt Tufto no problem, the biggest headache is waiting in the dealership for them to repair it. At the dealership I went to, it took all day even though it was only about an hour job

I had the thermostat issue too. Then the cooling fan went. Then an ignition coil burned out...
I had all the same issues myself, I did a video for all 3. Thanks for sharing your experience Jed 👍

Jed Higgerson had the same issue my thermostat and my cooling fan went as well .
This just happened to me. I live in Iowa and it was very cold the day it happened. Dealer can’t get me in for a week. Is it still okay to drive?
