- 1. It’s Time To Replace Your Oxygen Sensor
Oxygen sensors are a common cause of “check engine” lights. This sensor is located in the emission control system of your car, and is standard on all vehicles manufactured after 1980. The oxygen sensors are used to ensure that your engine is burning the correct amount of fuel, and running at peak performance. It also works with your catalytic converter to keep your emissions in check.
Over time, the oxygen sensor or O2 sensor can get covered in oil ash. This will reduce its ability to monitor the fuel (fuel system) and oxygen mix in your engine, and it will malfunction (can cause the check engine light to illuminate). Plus, it can also damage the air conditioning system.
2. your Gas Cap Is Loose Or Faulty
Sometimes this is all it takes to illuminate your “check engine” light. It may seem silly, but a loose gas cap (or damaged gas caps) totally throws off your vehicle’s emissions systems, because fuel vapors will leak out of the gas tank. This can lead to decreased vehicle efficiency.
The fix for this problem is very simple. Just check your gas cap! Is it loose? Tighten it up, and see if your “check engine” light turns off!
If your gas cap is damaged, that’s not a problem. Head to an auto parts store, and you should be able to purchase a replacement for $5-10.
3. Your Catalytic Converter Is Failing
Catalytic converters are responsible for reducing the emissions of your vehicle by converting carbon monoxide and other dangerous gases into harmless compounds. Most catalytic converters are good for the entire lifetime of your car - they typically last over 300,000 kilometers.
However, it’s possible that your catalytic converter is the source of your problems. If you’ve noticed deteriorated fuel efficiency, strange smells, and decreased performance, you may want to get your catalytic converter inspected.
Unfortunately, the fix isn’t cheap. Most catalytic converters cost upwards of $2,000, and you’re not going to be able to replace it yourself unless you’re an experienced mechanic.
4. Mass Airflow Sensor Needs Replacement
If you don’t regularly service your car’s air filter, you could be putting your mass airflow sensor at risk (and your exhaust system). This sensor helps your car’s computer inject the proper amount of fuel into the engine, increasing performance and efficiency.
If you don’t replace your air filter, this mass air-flow sensor can start to malfunction and provide incorrect information - leading to poor gas mileage, car stalling, and increased emissions. Because of this, you should replace your car’s air filter at least once a year.
The fix is pretty simple - but can be a bit expensive. The average cost of a mass airflow sensor is around $200. It’s best to let a mechanic perform auto repairs, and to consider replacing air filters while you’re still in the shop. This will ensure your new mass airflow sensor lasts for the years to come.
5. Faulty Spark Plugs
Spark plugs can last anywhere between 75,000-200,000 kilometers, depending on when your vehicle was manufactured. Spark plugs seal your combustion chamber, and provide the spark that ignites the fuel in your vehicle’s engine (ignition system).
If you have a bad spark plug or your spark plug wires start to misfire (ignition system issues), your check engine warning light will certainly turn on, and you may feel a “jolting” sensation when you try to accelerate your car.
The good news? Spark plugs are insanely cheap - and easy to replace. You can usually purchase spark plugs for about $10 a piece, and you can usually replace your old spark plugs on your own. Check out this handy video guide to learn how to replace spark plugs!
Don’t Panic When Your Check Engine Light Comes On!

2003 Honda accord here. I just bought it. But I noticed a small stall when accelerating. Once I hit 30mph it pulls back a bit. Now the check engine light popped up, should it be a huge concern? I will try and get it checked asap. Someone let me know.
I had new spark plugs put in w lifetime warranty and gas cap fits snug. I have no symptoms but service light came on when first started and it's not blinking. What do you recommend?

Try disconnecting your positive battery lead. Turn your light's on for a few seconds. That drains the power.
Then reconnect your battery.
And restart the engine.
In some cases it resets and no engine light on.

Gas cap is very common for the ce light to be on. Spray it with wd40 clean it off and tighten it.
Mine is been on for a while, I'll try this before taking it to the mechanic to check and probably get rip off because of it lol

SENSORS !!! Seriously, I have spent almost 25 percent of the purchase price of my Jeep Wrangler on replacing damn sensors (mostly labour costs due to their usually ludicrous, inaccessible locations). My mechanic (a Jeep specialist) says he wouldn’t own a Jeep newer than a 1992 model due solely to sensor and other electronic issues. He drives a CJ and TJ and they never seem to give him any issues other than regular SIMPLE servicing and uncomplicated tune-ups.
A petrol cap is another issue. If it's dirty and not sealing properly. This would cause light to come on. Check first.
I have a vw polo 2003.. sometimes when i turn the key to start the car it makes a kind of scratching noise, but the engine does not turn over and the engine warning light turns on. I turn the key to the off position and retry until the engine turns over, then the engine warning light turns off. I have replaced all the spark plugs and spark plug cables, but the problem is still there from time to time.. any ideas ?

Just had an experience with check engine light = Reduced power to engine, followed by sound of engine shifting from "D" to "M".
My check engine light stays on most of the time in my 2009 ford escape. A few days ago that light started flashing and it turned out to be a bad cylinder. But before then it was supposedly a bad egr valve and I had it replaced but that didn't help anything. I just had the bad cylinder replaced and that got rid of the light for a little bit but it's back on now but it is running fine. I did use an obd2 scanner and it still reads the code for the egr valve. It is my opinion that older ford vehicles are notorious for engine lights coming on and they are just not designed well. For now I'm just ignoring the stupid light as long as it isn't flashing. I will not buy another ford vehicle.
Hi your problem lies somewhere else . EGR will go bad only if you are having incomplete combustion of the gas. This generates soot or carbon and i5 starts depositing in EGR and then moves forward to intake and entire exhaust system. It contaminates the catalytic converter and the muffler.
Cylinder failure is one of the results .
I suggest you look at the injectors and service them . And check and service spark plugs ,coils and air filters as well .

Needs thorough investigation via computer diagnostics . There are 100 plus sensors which feed data to the ECM and it happens sequentially. So it is is possible that it gets a fault signal and then goes away and comes again when it’s the same sensor’s turn .
@@MrKhabbu I have 1.6 hdi Citroen where the Engine Light is on all the time. 3 different car repairs cant find the fault including Citroen repair shop.They all used computer diagnostics. Last bill from Citroen was 5000 dollars and the Engine Light is still on...

1) Did anyone of these experts got a fault code while doing computer scanning . If yes what were they.
2) If yes we’re they all the same or all different what were they.
3) If no codes found then fine.
4) Since how long the you got the light on . Did you do something just before .
5) Is your car running smoothly and fine and you have no issues like low pick up low mileage rough engine .

My kia car check engine on and code P2096 , i have checked plugs, MAF sensor, fuel pump and o2 sensor, spray catalyst converter , checked if there is any air leakage , but it is still on
Best to take it to the dealer. Kia is replacing engines under warranty.
Add one gallon of lacquer thinner to gas drive for One hundred miles. Now I have more exhaust coming out. Did not have to replace cat converter.

High idle can be due to cold start in the morning, faulty mass airflow sensor faulty fuel temperature sensor.
Of course there is more to it. But these are primary culprits

There's no such thing as quickly when the check engine light comes on it's going to cost you one way or another especially if it's not the gas cap O2 sensors can be expensive and catalytic converters tune-ups are expensive
My oil change was was overdue and I changed it and then the the check engine sign still appears what is the problem

When oil change is overdue the light comes with a message and or image of the oil can light up. You can get it reset and see. If it goes away then fine and if comes back then you need a scan
They have to reset your computer. They do that for free.
The reset is..turn ignition on..tap gas peddle three times fast..this resets the oil life timer..
