He also built his guitar the ‘Red Special’ from scratch with his father from the wood of the mantle over their fireplace, and it is the only guitar he has played live and, as he put it, has ever wanted or needed to have. He has a handful of exact copies as well, I think that is just so cool. He is also an Astrophysicist. Edit; you can even see him playing it here as a teen 5:52 it’s the same guitar after all these years!
The fireplace mantel was not their fireplace mantel, his father had gotten it somewhere, Brian said it was 100 years old at that time. And he most certainly has played other guitars, live on stage, at their concerts, there are certain guitars he uses for certain songs only, and not the duplicate backups. He exploited two hand tapping but May did it two years before him. May however didnt make it his signature, he explored the endless possibilities of sound experimentation of his guitar. Van halen is totally overrated because of his eruption solo. But there are way faster shredders than him. Buckethead for instance. Van halen does not have the instantly recognisable unique tone of May, the multiple techniques, the flamboyant style, the harmonies, the orchestration ability, the soulful exquisite solos or the iconic riffs. May is a true virtuoso. Van Halen is like a chevrolet Corvette, loud and fast but only good in a straight line. May's playing is out of this world everytime he touches his guitar. His playing is sophisticated and refined, extremely precise and his sound is out of this world..he's got soul, beauty and charisma both when he's slow or very fast, a bit like a Ferrari F40.
I stood infront of Freddie once when queen were on stage at Live Aid. When i freeze the dvd i can see me and Freddie in the same shot. When Freddie was getting the crowd to repeat his sing song commands i was standing right underneath him. I never really went to any other gig after that. it was pointless.

Have been an avid fan since the original release of Seven Seas of Rhye when first seeing it on Top of the Pops, I bought the single then the album Queen 11, I did see them live at Stafford Bingley Hall ( A huge cow shed) in the late 70s then twice in the 80s both at the NEC, first time at NEC was standing, second time we had elevated seating pretty close to the right side where Brian predominantly played, my mate even got an acknowledgement from him... all fantastic memories....if only we could go back 😔
