- Every turbo diesel needs to breathe so in this video we make a custom catless downpipe for my 2005 Mercedes E320 CDI. We also do a before and after sound clip and 0-60 MPH to measure the performance gain of removing a gigantic restriction in the exhaust. This downpipe should work even better with the larger turbo that's on its way and once we increase boost even more.

Who wants to see some transmissions mods next? I think we could shavs off some serious time with quicker shifts.
Bigger turbo, please.... Larger injector, more horsepower..
Turbo is on its way!!
Love your videos!
That scares me. My C230K transmission failed from a huge crack through a large center gear. While I continue to buy Mercedes, I still fear transmission failure.
@@LegitStreetCars dude you are ugly. You're never going to be successful at this. It's just the sad facts of the world. I'm ugly as hell too oh, so believe me I know what I'm talking about. You should give up like I did. Watch CZcams videos and stuff my face with food. It helps with the pain of everyone hating me because of my physical appearance.
*CALIFORNIA WANTS TO KNOW YOUR LOCATION.*
So do the Feds... I've always heard it was a $10k fine to remove emissions equipment. I mean, it's his car, and more power to him, but I'm surprised a shop would do it on camera. I hope I'm just being a worry wart, but they could get in trouble for something like that...
It's for offroad use..
That's going to be a hard defense to make when the car is shown in the same video going down the street...
Anyhow, as I said previously, I hope I'm worried over nothing.
🙄🤣🤣🤣🤣
@Mike My state (county by county, really) doesn't do any inspections of any kind. If you have a title and insurance card, you can plate it.
For years people were fighting for decent w123 turbo diesels. Now it’s time to fight for the ever elusive 05-06 w211 CDI
Nice! I always learn something new watching your videos.
My boy Alex back with a epic video🙌
I did that on my GL and no sound changes. Also, reprogrammed my ECU deleting all adblue made a big change. I can't wait to see your next videos with the big turbo!
Awesome channel Alex, great video 👌😊
Finally, it was worth it not going out... Awesome Video, Man
Keep doing the video's love them, subscriber from Denmark
Great mod and nice work guys 👌
Can't wait for you to straight-pipe this as it's what I wanted to do to my E320CDI when I had it lol
Another great LegitStreetCars video. Swap out those mufflers for some Flowmasters and that Benz would sound beefy.
It really does have the sound of a lil baby cummins at idle. Sounds cool as hell I hope you can get a torque reading when you are done with your mods someday. Great videos
I love the idle sound
Matt is a beast with that welding clean work.
I agree that rear bolt is hard to get at. I modified the shield on the two CDI's I have owned by grinding the hole into a slot. Now all you have to do is loosen the bolt, and slide the shield forward. Try it, you will like it!
Great video. Very entertaining
What a beautiful CDI!
Love this build. I’m following it closely.
The wood on black looks so much better than blue on my family's 03 Wagon :D
Nice, it isn’t that much louder and I don’t think it will smell bad. And once you get the bigger turbo.. oh my, it’s gonna sound and perform amazing! Really looking forward for it!! Also, 0-60 numbers don’t matter that much, because of the circumstances. You are definitely gaining a bit more hp and torque but don’t expect that high numbers.
Missed your notification again. 😡. Exhaust mod. Greaaaaaat
Love this build! I wanna get rid of my alh TDI and get one of these!
Love your videos man! Thought - Could you reduce the cat matter material by half to maintain partial exhaust cleansing and still lose that half boost for power gain and remove the muffler for sound quality? Cut a door into your old cat and remove the front filter matter, then mesh what is left and weld the door back on. That is why I need a shop in my garage! So I can further mod my S550.
Enjoyed the video, i'm surprised it's not it's not more noisy, base on the way the car is pushing you back in the seat it seems more powerful as well, not sure if it's my imagination, looking forward to the turbo mod, should be interesting.
Just to be precise, in Diesel vehicles is not called a catalytic converter. It is called a DOC or Diesel Catalytic Oxidizer.
its doc with dpf right?
@@antoniotod9614 Yes, only factory option in the US though. Normally the inline 6 just had the oxicat unless you optioned for the particulate filter.
Yes although not DOC had a DPF (dust particle filter). After 2011 I believe due to CARB and later EPA all diesels had to have a DPF and later and EGR.
I did catless downpipes on my e60 bmw 530d and i can definitely feel a difference in performance and responsiveness
I was very surprised when I saw the Polish inscriptions on the garage door ->> "Otwórz zasówę" :)
I use to work at an exhaust shop and the reason the o2 wouldn't screw in is bc you welded thr bung in without the cap. It got hot and shrunk.
Matt and his mallet= The Man😎
Love a performance diesel
I'm betting Alex had a mullet under his graduation cap too! The eliminated cat is still quiet but I like the sound fo the turbo being amplified.
Nice job bro from the chi
Alex, have you got a link for the stage one tune programme? Love this series on then320. Epic.
I believe that you will get an improvement on other speed ranges (from 40mph to 70mph for example). I believe that some mercedes engines are limited on how fast they can raise rotation.
Wow.
That Mullet !
. . . and the DIESEL GOODNESS keeps pouring . . . 🤘👌👍❤
Awasome video did you find a buyer for the silver cdi yet I really want to buy it
How on earth did you get the air box out. Ive replayed that video 20 times! Ive got all of the bolts out, but the gromets are killing me!
Ya know welding galvanized metal produces seriously toxic fumes, yeah?
Hank Hill, my thoughts exactly.. nasty stuff!
Yikes
Nothing as toxic as NOx !
You can weld galvanized steel as long as you remove the galvanized coating, and if you don't you risk serious health issues because of the heavy-metals.
@@Doomskilled thats why he ground the hell out of it on the grinder before he welded it
I think you should keep the straight pipe because it will make future mods make more power
Hi awesome video, have you any videos of this car from you fitted the bigger turbo?
Welcome to the wonderful world of compression ignition Alex. ‘Sounds like you will end up somewhere around 600 lb/ft of torque w/ the mods.
Hey Alex. Big fan. Quick question. How did you get that annoying fastener off from the back of the heat shield. Haven't been able to figure it out.
Hey man I love your channel, what you think about airmatic very stiff, open circuit on damping valve, no height or compressor problem, wiring and connectors or okay. Thanks for your advice I have a video on my channel about it.
Any problems passing emissions? I am in Nevada I have an e320 bluetec and am looking to do it what you do to your cdi. Thanks I’m a fan of your videos
The main strength of the car is it's in gear acceleration rather than from a standing start. You will see improvement in your 30 to 60 and 60 to 80 mph times and this is where the 320cdi excels. In the real world this is where you need the acceleration to be? I love it,leaves other cars standing!
What kind of numbers are you getting for 60 to 80 acceleration with your CDI? Thanks
very good
I'd like to see a rear axle ratio change on this or your E55 to get more power to the ground in the 1/4 mile.
Hey I know it’s a while since you posted this, Just wondering is that the 320 with the Om642?
Nice video and good gains from the downpipe. I think you might have a diesel particulate filter, rather than a catalytic converter
Both of them are in single casing, first there is a cat and dpf right after it.
You should have a LegitStreetCars lane at Byron with just your cars. Grab a bunch of your buddies and convoy it.
I'm pretty sure you can book now or very soon. I'm sure a lot of people would show up and buy T- shirts and stickers and stuff.
Screw a down-pipe, put in a hood stack! 😜
With a tractor flap! 😂
🤣👍
@@ja.935g67 Like Cleetus McFarland 😂
@@ChannelZeroOne To be fair, Cleetus got it from the diesel realm.
@@ja.935g67 hell yeah brother, lol
You're great guy man.And making good youtube videos.I i'm watching this e320cdi project with big hopes.PS: i love the STANDARD sunroof.
I would think you would put in a form of a shift kit in the trans to go along with the turbo
Hi Alex I heard in this video that your 320CDI has a stage 1 tune. I have a CLK270 w209 2004 with 174,000 miles with full Mercedes service & parts. What are your thoughts on me getting it a stage 1 tune? Please could you advise? Chris
How many miles were on the black E320 when you bought it?
hey bro, just curious if i remove my downpipe cat for M271 engine would it be almost the same like diesel engine like urs? i mean no sound & get a better performance? thanks 😉
EGR removal Alex .. if it has one ? :)
I thnk that intercooler is the weak link in any major performance gains. What type of EGTs are you seeing?
Did you ever have any issues with the o2 sensor reading bad after this modification
What turbo is coming from the UK?
I ask as I’m a subscriber from the UK myself
You should check my 3.2 cdi with out the mufflers, but with the cats
Cool music in this video !
Thanks! I bought some from an indy guy that I really liked
Curious about how you tune it without the downpipe and exhaust modifications.
I have an ML 320 CDI and e320 cdi.
I have a juice box on the SUV, which is quite nice… But… It looks like there’s more to be had!
Are you going to ceramic coat the car?
Also remove the spare tire and other stuff in the trunk to reduce weight
Wait until you change out the intercooler and turbo, you will hear even more whistle from the turbo. I still have stock downpipe and can hear my new turbo whistling a lot more. I really need to get my downpipe taken care of
Can you please suggest me a good intercooler and AirFilter for this car
Dit you need to program the 02 sensor or put a mini cat in i did the same catless downpipe ons my c320 and it starts smoking (White smok)
Did you weigh both? (the silver and the black) I think the 0,3s could be because of increased weight from the higher amount of gimmicks you mentioned, the black one has. ( for example real leather beeing heavier than the artificial material...)
If you want to change the intercooler, try thinking to put an air to water one. It reduces the lag of the turbine to almost 0. But if you don't or its a to high cost ,let the original one and the new turbo. Otherwise you will have big turbo lag,and a small wide band of power.
Hey @legitstreetcars what am bumper did you put on your cdi?
As far as i know you want to loose as much temp as possible right after the turbo to gain power by getting more exhaust gasses away from the hot side(hot air has more volume than cold) so wrapping it with heat isolation can get it worse. What i think would be the best compromise is just wrapping the upper part so the intake does not get as hot as now but wrap it as minimal as possible to get it to cool down as fast as possible
By letting it cool down the difference in density will cause like an vacuum allowing more gasses in the same time to get out
You got it wrong.. more expansion and heat with a wrapped tube leads to greater velocity and therefore exhaust efficiency.
I wish you would've gotten a sound clip with just the cut pipe how it sat at 7:05
I am thinking to buy a Mercedes GL 420 CDI or an GL450 CDI Which one has the best engine? And is 200,000KM or 124,000 miles too much? The models I look at have 120k+ miles on them. Hope you could give me any advice where to look for. Thanks!
Making sure you can adjust the angle of your dangle on the fly eh 😂
Been looking for this car.. any tips where to look??
Love your videos! Even more exiting now when you are modifying your CDI because I also have E320 CDI :)
Me too.... Got 40.4 my last tank in Colorado
Watching this series with McDonald's is so lovely😍
this is what i wanna do with my e46 320cd ,, gunna order a flexy and send it ,
Alex be careful with the illegal emissions set ups on video, don’t want you to get fined brother. Thank you for the awesome content and GOD BLESS🙏🏼
Man if you need to rest and relax, we are going nowhere, just take it easy!
Is that DPF or cat? And did you turn it soft-off?
Thanks for the contend but I dont think folks care about performance on a 07 diesel merc at least I dont. Im more curious about reliability and consumption.
downpipes are the bizz xD
You have the optil to make a better flowing in and outletcone on the Cat. That would help a lot combined whit a bigger exhaust under the car to the rear mufflers (hot exhaust gasses needs more space than colder gasses.) combined whit better a header and turbo type you could increase the cars potential and drivability. De-Cat is never a good idea.
But I maybe been damaged since i work with DPF and SCR systems. It is not easy power its Dirty power. i think that there is better ways to gain power, for example water injection, better Intercooler, cleaning the intake and porting the heads, better turbo, exhaust manifold, better injectors, better Highpressior pump. ECU optimizing. Oil catch tank.
If you ajust the engine to make as little sod at possible you will get more NoX but when you don't get the oil in the manifold it would be easy'er to keep it clean. It's not free but is is a better way to do it. You can tune and still be green ish. And when you do that you learn a lot..
Other wise i love the video's one of them help my friend trouble shorting on his W211 e270cdi.
Best regard from a viewer in Denmark
they got galvanize fume vape yet? make sure you clean your galvanized tubing with brake cleaner next time..
I told you it would make a difference.
Hello I have a 1987 mercedes 300d turbo diesel. I believe my cat is bad and I'm thinking about removing it and busting the core out and bolting it back on.
Will this set off the check engine light. It shouldn't hurt the way it runs considering its not electronically controlled correct. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
DId you have to code DPF removal out with computer also?
Can you take off the intake manifold and clean it?
Hello, love the Diesel Mercedes series, I wonder why not just remove what's inside the catalytic converter instead of welding a new pipe, because of the heat? Will it be any problems if I do it like that?
That's what Killdozer Marvin did on my f250
Whana see your e55 amg again new upgrade
So where did you bought the o2 sensor extension?
Please make a video how to clean properly a cdi engine
Good luck
Personally to me the exhaust note sounds less but turbo greater. Would rather some engine note personally. Off to watch the next episode in this series thanks Alex
How about instead of modifying the second hand cat by cutting it up just punch out the honeycomb inside the cat therefor leaving it stock looking from the out side .
SHITTY Gas Flow Dynamics.
Cut the pipe's at each end of the cat weld a straight pipe through the cat weld the original pipes back on and problem solved flow issue gone while keeping the stock look.
Ya fuck the environment and clean Air, who wants that. The negligible 1hp gain is better
Q: Why do you have " Otwórz zasówę " on your wall?
Maybe measure 50-70mph or some other metric.
Could you get some headers made up to go in all that space you have created? :)
Love the channel, good luck with your projects, from the uk
Exactly what I was thinking when I saw him only measure 0-60.
Yeah, it will definitely stink and pollute more without a cat/dpf. And in ur particular case, no performance gain. What makes me more curious, is a fumes test. With cat vs without cat. To see if it’s worth the weight loss and space gained in the engine compartment
