I Installed A Bigger Turbo On My Turbo Diesel Mercedes & It's Awesome!

  • We all need bigger turbos in our lives so I installed one, on my 40 MPG daily driver Turbo Diesel Mercedes. I plan on making big power with this car while keeping it 100% reliable and fuel efficient and this turbo is the key. I have Big plans for the 2005 E320 CDI so make sure to stay until the end to find out what is coming up next!
    Big Price Update on the turbo. A few days after I put out this video Darkside reached out to inform me that the turbo would cost about double the price they had originally planned for and posted on their site. At the time of making this video, and for a few days after it came out the price was indeed $600. It is currently $1,150. I do not work for Darkside (obviously) and have nothing to do with pricing and this was a surprise to me too. They explained that there was an error when pricing out parts and production cost and it wouldn't be possible to sell them for $600 any longer. Sorry for the confusion and I'll keep everyone updated if the price changes.
    This turbo fits many other turbo diesel Mercedes and they are listed on the Darkside Development’s link below. If you order a turbo make sure to send me an email. I'd love to hear what else you're doing and share build ideas and strategy. Legitstreetcars@gmail.com

    A diesel engine regulates it's power output by varying the AFR via injecting more or less fuel. If you simply cramp more air inside the engine and thereby increasing the Lambda value, the diesel engine (technically) doesn't care at all. You can go full throttle no problem with that new turbocharger. Theoretically the engine should run better and cooler as there is more oxygen available to completely burn the fuel and more inert gas in the cylinder which has to be heated. If the Turbo is more efficient than your old one you can expect another increase in power as a result of the increased force pushing on the piston during the induction stroke. injection timing is critical on a diesel engine though. It's the diesel's ignition advance if you want to compare it to a gasoline engine. But as long as you don't touch it, you can go full throttle with your new turbo without caring about it running leaner ;).

    • @kwittnebel
      @kwittnebel Před 5 lety +1

      @@LegitStreetCars That turbo should lag more until you add fuel. I would be curious to see a 0-60 time and at what rpm it starts building boost before adding more fuel; I assume the tuning box has some sort of data logger inside so you can compare boost curves etc. I am also curious as to how a larger diameter turbine wheel interacts with the vanes in the turbine housing; I would assume there is an optimal distance between the vanes and the wheel and messing with that could compromise spool. Or it might not! Hope you post some more performance data as you go along.

  • @dieselgaint
    @dieselgaint Před 5 lety +20

    It sounds like your worried about "leaning out" the afr. Don't worry about it. If a diesel runs lean it won't make power because the fuel quantity injected is less then the minimum required to run not by having too much air. Think of a clogged fuel filter situation. It won't burn pistons or damage rings. Now too much fuel and not enough air will melt pistons and valves if it's run too hot for too long. Thats why you need an egt gauge so you don't melt it down. It sounds good and looks like it will be a rocket when it's done!

      @@LegitStreetCars lol yeah. I'm scared of my E55 running lean on #8. 80mm pulley, 82 throttle body and headers on stock fuelling lol. I'm really enjoying watching you progress through the hot rod diesel world! Tuning by afr is still a good method to tune for any engine. I would encourage some wot pulls. You probably see that you will have zero smoke compared to the old turbo which had a light haze. Light haze is still fine but it is power left on the table.

    Loving this project!
    FWIW though, diesels are kind of opposite from what we are used to with turbo gasoline engines in terms of tuning. They ALWAYS run on the lean side of stoich, and the more air you add, the safer they get. It's actually when you start to add the fuel back in with the extra air that you make more and more torque (and smoke), and add stress to the engine. Too bad HP Tuners won't tune that year of Merc, it would be fun to play with. I could probably tune one on WinOLS, but that has so much pain involved it would ruin the fun, Lol. Loving the content!!

    Great deal on the turbo! Could have spent double that for a new, bigger one.

    The increased volume of air will bring the EGTs down if the fueling stays the same and increase the mpgs as well. Unlike a gasser, more boost is helpful as long as the turbo is in its most efficient operating range.

    We have a Lou's in Phoenix!!! The brought it in a couple years ago. Gino's also put one up out here, but they shut down in a year. I am so glad we have real Chicago deep dish pizza here.

    If you put your mufflers back on, and add an exhaust cut-out in downpipe, it would be hella' sleeper!

    • @gedas3419
      @gedas3419 Před 5 lety

      @@sonacphotos No. Electronic exhaust cut-out valve. Butterfly valve and it's electronicaly controlled(like electronic throttle body) via a switch. He presses the button, valve open, gasses go straight downpipe to air. Also less exaust pressure, turbo builds up boost faster. If the valve must be opened, because of exhaust pressure, it would not have any powergains at all. It's very good for sleepers. 3 inch downpipe going through stock exhaust would really be power sucking, but at exhaust downpipe through 3inch cutout straight to ground, also if pipe is cutted level-flat it would even add scavenging.
      Screamer pipes are external wastegates, which have different pipe, and don't go to the same down pipe. Or internal wastegated turbo, which has downpipe with diverter and another pipe.
      Diesels run vgt, vnt vanes,which control the boost.

    I am from Europe and all i can say is that the 320 cdi on w211 is the best diesel engine you can buy. I am the owner of one and there is no problem with them what so ever. Cheers and love your vid... 🤙

    Btw, you don't need to weld in a bung for an EGT probe. All you do is drill and tap the manifold, which can be done without removing it. Did it to my truck before I upgraded to a race manifold and bigger turbo. 👍

    $600 is a fair price for improved turbo, but $1,150 to me is out of the question! I own a 1983 300SD. I will just rebuild my turbo to stock condition. I don't have that kind of money to spend!

    Great video showing the potential of a diesel engine. I was wondering if its fine to install a bigger turbo on a diesel. Looks like it is. Did you compare the horsepower difference new vs old ? Less turbo lag as well??

    You are definitely the guy to ask. You have an awesome channel and straight info on the Merc brand. I have been scratching my head trying to get a light weight (relatively speaking) diesel engine for aircraft conversion. The OM629 V8 4.0 CDI looks like it might fit the requirements. It has room for bigger bore wet sleeves, I'm not sure about room for a stroked crankshaft? The balance shaft and offset crank journals are all better at spreading out torque pulses.
    The question is, with a stand-alone ecu and all emissions components removed and disabled could it be reliable?
