I Installed A Big Intercooler On My Turbo Diesel Mercedes So I Cut Open The Old One. What's Inside?

  • The Turbo Diesel Mercedes gets a big front mount intercooler upgrade and looks so good. Larger and more efficient intercoolers increase horsepower and torque by cooling your intake charge. The cooler the air the more oxygen dense it is and with more air comes more power! This is a bar and plate style Universal Intercooler so I had to figure out how to mount it and it turned out great. I also chopped the old one in half to show you what’s inside of an air to air intercooler. And because it was fun.

    You can also pick these up at stores like Home Deopt.
    Stay tuned for a link to buy the intercooler. I’m getting all the parts put together for a final product and then it will be listed on the Victory Road Performance website. For now, check out their other performance parts for Mercedes and AMG cars.

  • @turbo97semax
    @turbo97semax Před 5 lety

    Awesome! I used a similar technique when I did my first mounting method. But I went cheaper route. I got a single 180 bend and chopped into 2x 90s with 4 silicone couplers. My intercooler in/out was also 3" input though so no reducers necessary. You made a great point about the bead roll on the ends. When I chopped mine, I lost bead roll on one side of each pipe and it kept blowing off on one side. I had to create a bead roll on that side to prevent blow off.
    For the plastic silencer on the intake side (driver's side), you can just cap it. For the passenger side from the turbo, a custom pipe needs to be made.

  • @criticaljim1
    @criticaljim1 Před 5 lety +2

    Just a heads up, what you call the intake silencer is a helmholtz resonator. It will help silence exhaust drone but also add horsepower by modulating the pressure at the intake valves, by bouncing soundwaves (pressure) at the right oscillation through the resonator - back into the intake just as the valves are opening. Kind of like ramming air into the intake at the valves just at the right time. Lots of good documents about it on google. I could not tell how this would affect the performance of your CDI project (probably minimal), but it might be worth looking into before you delete them.

    Great video. When you started the video series on the diesel I could find numerous e320's for sale in my area for $4-5K. Now? hell, no... the one gold one is $7K...
    Are the remaining pipes going to the turbo rubber or plastic? When I built my Conquest, I had to replace all the rubber IC pipes with hard pipes to prevent the boost surging from the expanding rubber pipes causing severe wastegate flapping at WOT. Basically the WG and the rubber pipes were combating each other. It seriously smoothed out my powerband on the dyno. Just a thought for when you remove those silencers.

    Great job. What size is the new intercooler?

    from an efficiency point of view, fitting the 3" at the intercooler and having the 90' bend in 3inch would flow much more

    I'm fixing to buy 2008 Mb e320 cdi .. today I did a test drive .. when I got the gas I feel like it's lagging big time.. it won't accelerate like normal car does..even if I floor the pedal. Also the steering felt bit stiff when you move left to right vice versa other than that looks fine. Would you kindly let me know what would be a issue and what am I looking at to regarding price.. inorder to fix these issue. They asking $4800 with 160k miles... Are these common problems ? I would appreciate if u give me a little guide on this ...thank you

    Any word in the intercooler kit? I talked to Phil at vrp . He says hes waiting on one more coupler to be fabricated. My turbo and injectors are going to him this week.

    Did you ever remove the silencers and if you did how hard were they to do?

    And, just a thought, any chance or reason to do so, to change from the 5G trans to the 7G?

    Have you done a run with this setup? Cause I did exactly the same cooler on my 270cdi. I did long radius reducing silicone bends. I'll save you some time cause it will blow the hose off no matter what clamp you are going to use.
