I Installed A Big Intercooler On My Turbo Diesel Mercedes So I Cut Open The Old One. What's Inside?

- The Turbo Diesel Mercedes gets a big front mount intercooler upgrade and looks so good. Larger and more efficient intercoolers increase horsepower and torque by cooling your intake charge. The cooler the air the more oxygen dense it is and with more air comes more power! This is a bar and plate style Universal Intercooler so I had to figure out how to mount it and it turned out great. I also chopped the old one in half to show you what’s inside of an air to air intercooler. And because it was fun.

You can also pick these up at stores like Home Deopt.
Stay tuned for a link to buy the intercooler. I’m getting all the parts put together for a final product and then it will be listed on the Victory Road Performance website. For now, check out their other performance parts for Mercedes and AMG cars.

Finally..... Some Good Content on CZcams, Chris Fix of Mercs
Alex fix? Haha. Thanks brother
Chris fix is shite. Alex is an ex merc tech.
ChrisFix ? That guy which earns big money on youtube ,but still fix cars on front yard ? Alex has a garage at least.
@@Romif_SK what's wrong with Chris fixing cars in his driveway?
Im impressed with you juggling job, kids, house and still giving us great content. Keep at it man!
Thanks Tim!
@@LegitStreetCars You deserve it. This is one of my favourite channels!
Yeah exactly I honestly don’t know how you do it man, nuff respect ✊🏼
Very informative. Very good idea to show us the interior of the intercooler - I always wondered what it looked like. Looking forward to the next updates !
This Diesel Merc is looking to be a beast on the track
Raising the value of e320 cdi's one video at a time. I never thought I would want one but now I kind of do.
been looking for a deal on one since the CDI series started
ONLY_V8s 🤪🤣. You’re welcome to a diesel barge
Never ever test drive one, you will be hooked. 😂
They're a fantastic car!
Awesome content mate. Ive never owned a diesel, but your series inspired me to go out and get a common rail diesel of my own! (2007 toyota hilux pick up 3.0 turbo diesel manual) is a rocket and just did my own custom exhaust and its even better now
Awesome! I used a similar technique when I did my first mounting method. But I went cheaper route. I got a single 180 bend and chopped into 2x 90s with 4 silicone couplers. My intercooler in/out was also 3" input though so no reducers necessary. You made a great point about the bead roll on the ends. When I chopped mine, I lost bead roll on one side of each pipe and it kept blowing off on one side. I had to create a bead roll on that side to prevent blow off.
For the plastic silencer on the intake side (driver's side), you can just cap it. For the passenger side from the turbo, a custom pipe needs to be made.
Thanks for your recommendation of FCP Euro, placed my first order today after seeing what they deliver in your videos! Keep it up
Looking forward to seeing the custom work done !
Love your channel and it just keeps getting better and better! Just solid and interesting content all the time!
I was rocking your tshirt at the drag strip last night down here in FL and all day today while I was detailing the rides!
Dude that's awesome. Thanks for that!!
Alex
looking good man, i cant wait to see it finished
The Milwaukee battery life is insane. I go weeks without using it and it is still charged. Will be getting the emanual for my XC90 V8 for $19. Totally worth it.
12:42 hits bong 👍
This is a fun build can't wait to see it finished
Awesome content! Who on CZcams is calling manufactures for more specific information? Nice job! I have a 335d BMW and a lot of this stuff translates over. I used to live in Evanston and now in southern Michigan, so we’re practically neighbors!
Nice work Alec . No Fear in adapting anything.
Lol I missed this one 2 lol . Your car is really starting to get there. Can’t wait till it’s completely done !
You should weld a 90° straight to the intercooler like the factory setup. Much neater (like factory) & better internal flow.
Nice job Alex!
Same thoughts . . . the less joints the better it flows, the cleaner it looks.
you should put rubber mount between your strut/bracket/IC to absorb vibration
when it's to rigid the IC could crack
Just a heads up, what you call the intake silencer is a helmholtz resonator. It will help silence exhaust drone but also add horsepower by modulating the pressure at the intake valves, by bouncing soundwaves (pressure) at the right oscillation through the resonator - back into the intake just as the valves are opening. Kind of like ramming air into the intake at the valves just at the right time. Lots of good documents about it on google. I could not tell how this would affect the performance of your CDI project (probably minimal), but it might be worth looking into before you delete them.
Wow, what a tiny intercooler! I'm not shocked now that it didn't work well! The intercooler on my 95 Cummins diesel is 4-5x that size!
Another great video! Thanks Alex
I got all 3 milwaukee fuel ratchets, and they are all awesome. The stubby 1/2" impact is also very nice. In Europe its kind of hard to get 3/8" impact sockets, so we got all the sockets in 1/2".
I dont use manhal ratchets anymore, if the milwaukee ratchets fit.
Hell yeah I can't wait to see the next video!!
I have such respect for this fellow
You got super lucky the OEM Mercedes piping is super convenient and very similar to performance applications. 👍👍
Would love to see you some videos where you describe common problems on different engines or vehicles. The episode regarding the M272 ML350 comes to mind. Would LOVE to see you working on a W212 with a M276 engine.
This is one awesome project!
Great project! It seems like some ducting would really help the air go through all radiators, not go around one.It would really be interesting if you measure temps and other data for comparision. Just some cheapo cutout plastic and ducktape would probably do the trick
On your original piping you have those rubber o-ring seals, you need to remove those. Then there are three bumps around the circumference of the aluminium tips,..... those need to be ground flush.... I also used heavy duty clamps just in case.
I bought a nice 1/2 fuel impact wrench this past week. Turned fixing broken sway bar links from a 2hr job to 10 minutes. Also I found a e55 amg engine mounted to a tremac manual. Was supposed to go into a xk8 but he ended up selling the car before he could swap it lol. I wonder what that combo would feel like.
Mine is installed and looks awesome
Good video, thanks.
Bonjour je suis tes tutos et tu es vraiment efficace et très performant sur la W211 dommage que tu sois pas en france merci beaucoup pour toutes tes vidéo à bientôt Coquet.
Alex it's a hero haha, I have a E320, it's the best Mercedes E class chanel
Do you have an before and after air temp measurements regarding the new intercooler. I am curious to know how much better it cools then the factory.
A great video, being an ex Heavy Diesel Mechanic I one day want to play with a high tech German Diesel just to see how far they have got with their engines. I hope that you put the bolt back in the rear trailing arm before you drove the car again, it would be embarrassing if it came out completely along the road somewhere!!!!!!!!
Coolest 16 minutes I have seen on a diesel. I have a GL320 cdi.
Another great installment Alex. I am beginning to think my prediction of 300 bhp/600 pd/ft/to may be a little lite when you started the build. And just think-it will still get 40 mpg when you keep your foot out of the pump!
Great video. When you started the video series on the diesel I could find numerous e320's for sale in my area for $4-5K. Now? hell, no... the one gold one is $7K...
Are the remaining pipes going to the turbo rubber or plastic? When I built my Conquest, I had to replace all the rubber IC pipes with hard pipes to prevent the boost surging from the expanding rubber pipes causing severe wastegate flapping at WOT. Basically the WG and the rubber pipes were combating each other. It seriously smoothed out my powerband on the dyno. Just a thought for when you remove those silencers.
Don't want to hate on your video, but those steel corner brackets will break sooner or later.
Agreed, they will break... Needs some support from the bottom as well..
Yep, he enlarged the holes too much; not enough material left (net section).
Probably find the self tappers in the crash bar will die first lol.
Those L shaped brackets are shockingly weak. Good video but wrong brackets. Drilled out and has hole pre drilled so they are already stressed in the way they was installed. I don't feel they are suited for hanging stuff.
Also they will disintegrate after a couple of winters and screwed to two different materials.
Aluminum or stainless are the best options here.
This thing is gonna be sick
The 90° bend will always flow less than the straight pipe... therefore you would have tried to use a 3" bend (to maximize flow rate / minimize restriction), then adapt down to the 2.5" intercooler fittings.
Glad to see you getting custom hot/cold pipes. Now how about that hood stack?! 😝
I got a 96 W210 e230
Avante guarde with body kit and the monoblock wheels. Uk car imported to here.
The w210 is an ugly car imo. I have the w211 e270. Much better car.
Could not find an manual on my W210 E270CDi... well, guess I'll have to figure out working on it myself :D
Great video. Thanks. Whenever you want to sell the grey cdi please let me know.
Amazing work! You’ve inspired me to get a cdi. I was originally going to get a w123 but you changed my mind. I did come across a w124 with 124k. It’s an amazing deal and it’s from my father boss. I know there isn’t much I can do to increase power. I trust you over anyone else with Mercedes. Do you have any input on that car? Everything has been gone through and it just needs paint.
geat video bro thank you
This .....is real good
I’m going to replace my exhaust pipe from the turbo to the muffler on my GL350 diesel. Do you have a DIY video for this? I will be tuning it, as well. Great videos.
It would be amazing if you would make a video on how to use the WIS and EPC!
I'm with you on the tutorial but I think each brand as in Mercedes vs BMW has a different way of operating inside the manual. But I still wouldn't mind seeing what it looks like when the Mercedes side.
Any chance you can update the link to the repair manual? Thank you for your videos
Chris are u obsessed or just relentless or both.lol...love what you do
2 kids, F/t job and a lot of video content, awesome Alex. Love your "don't blame everyone else like a millennial" grab the situation by it's family jewels and make s*** happen! Thanks brother!
Alex thank you for your awesome videos! The Milwaukee fuel ratchet you used in this vid is 12v or 18v? Thanks again
Alex took off the CDI's legs, took off the intercooler and installed a new one and made it watch as he sliced up the old one with a huge saw. That new intercooler is gonna do it's job for sure
Your going down intercooler!!
You really deserve more views!!
Thanks!
Never ever saw myself owning a Benz but now I'm on the hunt for the right E320 CDI.
Great build, have you ever thought about doing a W163 ML270? As everyone is into performance SUVs, it would be interesting to see how well a tuned up one would compete.
3years late but I don’t think they got the 270 in America
Great job buddy, but I will love to have all models of mb workshop and service manual from 2000 to 2021
nice vid!
what is the size of the new intercooler? :)
Hey Alex! Great content, would you happen to have the dimensions of the intercooler
Alex, Any update for the Intercooler kit? I need one for my 2005 E320 CDI. Thanks
Great show as I have a 2006 e320 cdi with problems. Always comes up with p2015 code. Any ideas?
Is WIS wiring included with wis? Need to find a battery draw on my c32 amg 😭
I have an 06 with 53k miles ( you read that right). Want to do everything you have done. But really want to see dyno results after turbo and intercooler upgrades. The exhaust changes and tune added around 60ish crank hp. Are you doing anything to address cooling? Water pump modification, bigger radiator etc??? I live in Phoenix, AZ so that is important to me...
Time to finish the other side of the car and get those wheels because I want to see and hear it drive again :D
@ Alex
@18:15 your giant logo on your shirt MIGHT compare to your massive rear rotor (doubt it), but no contest to the front. AMG in the house. Appreciate your video's man, thanks.
Hi I love the videos you made absolutely amazing really appreciated I just got a request Sir if it is possible if you can make 1 video about e270 cdi turbo diesel all pipes and connections such as turbo pipes intercooler pipes intake manifold pipes hydraulic pipes coolant pipes. Where they are connected which pipe goes to where and connect where. It would be extremely appreciated
Best youtube car series
btw if you cut the metal around the stock clip intercooler rubber you don't need to use the reducer
Who made the music? It's awesome!
Approx cost of the inter cooker upgrade?
Will it benefit much if I have stock turbo and tune?
Just a thought; Why not have the intercooler modified with V-band style clamps then you can make an elbow that connects directly into the stock system and cut the number of silicon boots down as much as possible.
We would love to hear your opinion on the S55 AMG reliability since it shares the same engine and gearbox from the E55
Yea definitely me too
Outside of the ABC suspension, it's a great car. But that suspension can be expensive. I made a video breaking down costs on a CL65.
@@LegitStreetCars and the SBC brake pump. Very costly when it breaks.
What’s up Alex ?
I’m looking hard at the E class and never thought much about a diesel but I am now. I’m interested in 2010 through 2015 and wanted to know what years to stay away from ?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Did you make a video when you installed the big e 55 brakes? I remember my cdi brakes capabilities weren’t the best. How do those work out?.
Hey Alex, how do you remove the front bumper cover bottom 2 bolts with the intercooler in the way? Please help
Gave up on Makita? No discount code for Milwaukee? Great video!
i have been a commercial rescue mech for a long time happy to see you use Makita . Makita make the best hand tools on earth better than de wally and better than pretty much everything else . Had De wally stayed with Elu's Specs then they would rule but noooooo i have destroyed many de wally's . Makita :D Dude You Need a Band Saw in the Ws .
Will this intercooler kit fit a 07-09 Mercedes e320 with a om642 v6 cdi? I'm looking to get tuning and a upgrade turbo.
There is a bigger inter cooler from the e350 cdi w212, I am interested if this would fit easier...
I don’t have a CZcams channel (wish I did ) and my opinion on this subject don’t count for much but you have great content for building /repairing etc... but the channel needs more car driving content ! Idk, that would be nice ! Maybe poll your subscribers to see what kinds of videos they’d like to see!? , maybe not. Lol your channel you the boss !
With regard to the chop saw... get one that has the tungsten carbide blade.. So much better, faster and much cleaner cut. Regards Peter A. Liverpool UK.
You didn't cleaned the big radiator. Or you didn't show us. It's too satisfying!!!
I remember when I used my first recip saw too. Lol.😁
Haha, the blade was super dull and for some reason I thought it go back and forth like it's not doing that for me, lol
@@LegitStreetCars I just at the part were you used the chop saw, much better. 👌
Hi Alex did cx racing make a specific intercooler for the 320 cdi
Hello I want to ask you if this Cooler can you put on the Mercedes w203 C270 CDI, or what I can put at all with stock turbo????
You could just use a 90 degree reducer bend straight from the intercooler to the original hoses
Which of the options were you using for the software? WIS etc...? You have 3 I think options right?
Great job. What size is the new intercooler?
from an efficiency point of view, fitting the 3" at the intercooler and having the 90' bend in 3inch would flow much more
I'm fixing to buy 2008 Mb e320 cdi .. today I did a test drive .. when I got the gas I feel like it's lagging big time.. it won't accelerate like normal car does..even if I floor the pedal. Also the steering felt bit stiff when you move left to right vice versa other than that looks fine. Would you kindly let me know what would be a issue and what am I looking at to regarding price.. inorder to fix these issue. They asking $4800 with 160k miles... Are these common problems ? I would appreciate if u give me a little guide on this ...thank you
Hi...how we fix a p1408 code for a w203 220 CDi 2004 the egr us brand new about 2 days... code clears but come back after first start
Any word in the intercooler kit? I talked to Phil at vrp . He says hes waiting on one more coupler to be fabricated. My turbo and injectors are going to him this week.
Did you ever remove the silencers and if you did how hard were they to do?
And, just a thought, any chance or reason to do so, to change from the 5G trans to the 7G?
Have you done a run with this setup? Cause I did exactly the same cooler on my 270cdi. I did long radius reducing silicone bends. I'll save you some time cause it will blow the hose off no matter what clamp you are going to use.
Did you try hairspray before put the hose in ?
